View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with vpnc on F12 that work fine on F10 and F11. On F12, I can connect and can do some activities, but so far I noticed the following (show-stopping) issues:Attempting to connect to an Oracle database using either sqlplus or TORa hangs and eventually times out. I tried both the 11G and 10G instant clients.Copying a file to the host via a smb:// mount in nautilus freezes. An empty file is created though.
A rdesktop client opens a "black" window and goes no further. I attempted to downgrade vpnc on my F12 workstation from vpnc-0.5.3-4.fc12.x86_64 to vpnc-0.5.3-3.fc11.x86_64 to no avail. I also downgraded libgcrypt too and this didn't help either. Moreover, I upgraded these to the F13 rawhide version - still no luck.
I also confirmed on a F11 virtual machine that these work and that it doesn't work on 2 x64 and 1 x386 F12 machines. (The configuration and the host are the same in all cases.)
I am looking for an email client with the following specifications. I have trialled most of the commonly recommended clients but have found ongoing irritations that push me to keep looking.
Specifications
1. specific email client, not PIM
2. can run as a portable application or configuration files and mail can be stored remotely
3. minimal or no dependences
4. can scan for viruses
[code]...
Evolution matches 5, 6 and 9. The program is a good general client but slow and glitchy. Can't scan for viruses in emails. Kmail matches 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Does most of what I need with the powertools plugin but does not play well with Gnome. The program comes with too many dependencies that makes it very hard to move data around or even use on various machines. The dependence on the akonadi server is quite frustrating and makes this kde application a great product but only really useful on kde. Thunderbird matches 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9. Again reasonably comprehensive but lacks the basic ability to scan incoming emails (filters can pipe incoming data to an external program). The fact that the mail is intrinsically linked with your Mozilla profile makes working with the email file very difficult.
Clawsmail matches 1, 2 (old version), 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 (Windows Port old and not maintained) and 9. Looks good but appears to lack portability and a current windows version. I want to check my mail (predominantly POP accounts), have spam and viruses set aside/deleted/quarantined, have my attachments saved to a directory so my mailbox does not get too big and for the emails and configuration data be stored in a distinct directory that can be readily synchronized between computers. The program should be able to run on Ubuntu and Windows XP/Vista/7, on the same data once the data directories are synchronized. And no, I don't want an Internet based option like gmail or yahoo.
I need to download a particular NNTP group. I do not need to setup any crons, put group contents in /opt and other stuff. Just run <fetch-nntp> <server> <group-name> <output-dir> and be done with it without putting a lot of garbage in the system.
If that <fetch-nntp> would not fetch the same messages on the second run fine. But I can live without it. All NNTP clients that I've looked at are trying to be a NNTP server as well. Is there something simpler that is suitable for my needs?
I'm attempting to take Ubuntu 10 down to an image as small as possible to support Citrix Receiver. We currently log them into a browser interface using Firefox where they authenticate against a Citrix DDC and then launch the plug-in. I'm wondering if there is a simple way to determine what services I can shutoff to limit the footprint of the OS. Some of the machines have only 256MB of RAM. They run the plug-in just fine, but there's a lot background activity affecting the machines...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to write a simple client that opens a secure connection. My intent is to use the OpenSSL library.
I am following this tutorial: [URL]... The tutorial mentions that I need a trust certificate store called TrustStore.pem. However, I can't find that on my machine. Is there a way to generate it? I separately downloaded the source from the OpenSSL website. The source distribution doesn't have it either. There is a whole bunch of .pem files. Can I use any one of them?
trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
[code]....
I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?
i'm a college student studying pc programing, and i was given today a special work and i have to program using miranda... which i've never used it >.< can anyone give me a hand to where to download, how to compile, and a simple tutorial for making a simple program or something?

Just need some quick direction with this, as I have no idea where to begin:I run irssi in screen, and have a simple script that uses notify-send when I am private messaged/hilighted/etc. It works fine, and makes KDE pop up notifications like any other stuff does. However, if I restart KDE with /etc/init.d/kdm restart, the script fails with (every time it is triggered):
Restarting irssi doesn't fix this, the entire screen session has to be dismantled. Is there a way to fix this, or at least a place to start? It's a perl script, but I have no idea where to begin. I guess on a high level, some sort of ID is changing, but is still referenced by screen?
I was wondering if there is anyway to adjust scanner settings less not plugging in a scanner with using Simple Scan?I recently found out (sadly) that I could change the DPI settings for document and picture scans when my USB wasn't getting the scanner.Gave a prompt notification bar above and asked me to select scanner (which I replugged it in) and was able to do the settings. Is there a shortcut or command I can use to trigger this any time I need to?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI've decided to try and setup a simple home server with Debian. I can either install the OS on a compact flash card and use hard disks as storage, or just install everything on the hard disk. I'd also like to set up a software raid for mirroring. I've never done this before, and most recently updated documentation i've found is for ubuntu. Any advice or good links someone can point me to on how to set up raid? I'd like to encrypt my hard disks but I don't know what my options are. It seems like people point to truecrypt, but i'm wondering what else is out there or if people have any advice on this. Would it be feasible to do this if I install the OS on a compact flash card and?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently freshly installed Debian 8 (stable) XFCE.Everything was working fine. I installed Skype (using the instructions in the Debian wiki) and that worked no problem. I then installed libavcodec56-extra (just to have the extra codecs ready in case needed), and Synaptic also installed the i386 version also. After that, no sound (anywhere at all).I reinstalled libavcodec-56 (and the i386 version) to try to rectify the problem, but the sound has not returned.
As per a google seacrh, i installed pulse audio. This showed me that the the 'levels' were moving in line with the sounds which should have been playing, but no amount of tweaking managed to get the sound to come out. I have Mint installed on the same machine and the sound works fine here so i know for sure it is not a hardware issue.
I noticed recently my XFCE 4 is missing its background. I seem to have falled back to some gray background. I noticed icons/files that should be in desktop is also missing. Seems like desktop is broken somehow Whats wrong? The single panel holding window buttons etc is still working. ( debian jessie )

During every freeze all those happen:
Screen freezes (The whole display becomes frozen, with only cursor movement - Time displayed stays frozen too)No keyboard input (even Cap & Num Lock leds will not dim once pressed)Power button (pressing once will do nothing - I have to hold for an unhealthy shutdown and reboot)Touchpad Input Works (Cursor responses to movement only, clicks/change on-hover do not.) Fans become quiet
Today at 11:46, it happened while just running Chromium. At the time:
*XFCE4 Power Management Plugin
Presentation Mode [on]
Charger was connected
Here is the syslog (I know this isn't useful as it doesn't show what's causing the issue) the freeze happened at 11:46 and 11:57 is when I rebooted back into debian.

After being away for a long time I decided to go back to Debian with XFCE. It came with XFCE 4.10 and I would like to install 4.12.
I've spent several hours trying things from forums and blogs but am so far unsuccessful.
I was having a problem with the sound not going up to a high volume on my machine, so I tried following some online tutorials and ended up destroying the sound system on my machine. Now, instead of just having quite sound, I have no sound. The machine is a Dell Precision server and the attached files show my sound configuration. Ideally, I would like a way to make the sound louder (>100%), but now I will settle for just having sound.

I have a quite simple installation of Debian 8 Jessie XFCE and the resume from suspend is not working 9 out of 10 times. The system is single booted if that matters. I have found a few solutions to this problem but they were not suitable to my case as I don't have an Nvidia GPU but only Intel Onboard:
Code: Select all# lspci -v
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express DRAM Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2818
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Capabilities: [e0] Vendor Specific Information: Len=0b <?>
Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2818
[CODE]..
When I try to resume, I can hear the system booting but I can't see anything on the screen and the keyboard is not working either (no light on Num Lock and Caps Lock). The only option is to press the power button for a few seconds to stop the machine and then push again to start booting again.
In a debian squeeze box + Xfce the numlock is never enabled at login. Is there some daemon or some configuration to turn numlock on everytime I log into my Xfce session?
