Debian :: Setup A Web-based Secure Ftp Client?

Jan 29, 2010

I am trying to setup a web-based secure ftp client that can handle not only file transfers to and from one of my company's servers, but also allow new clients of ours to visit our site, create an account of their own and use it to log in and begin transferring files. This way, the users can manage their own accounts.

I don't know a lot about exactly what is running on our server, though I am almost positive it is debian based. I really only have access via ssh and ftp. I may be able to do more in the server room, but haven't tried. I thought about using net2ftp, but that doesn't seem to work with sftp, and also doesn't allow the creation of new users on the server.

Is there anything out there for me??You will undoubtedly require more information from me, so please let me know what it is and where I can find it and I'll get back to you as quickly as I can.

Debian Multimedia :: SFTP Client Setup - User Based Login

Nov 22, 2010

I have setup SFTP and it is running without any problems. The problem I have is finding a client that supports key based logins through Linux. I do not want user based logins available and so far the solution works through my Windows machines using WinSCP. The only client I have found for Linux seems to be FileZilla but I have to convert my private key to the FileZilla format which removes the passphrase leaving it nice and insecure.

Ubuntu Security :: Use A "secure" Proprietary Web-based Java FTP Client?

Oct 15, 2010

I was given the responsibility at work to upload some files to an offsite 3rd party FTP server. Apparently we use a "secure" proprietary web-based java FTP client.

The FTP client was buggy and repeatedly crashed. While I was waiting for it to work, I decided to look at the HTML of the website when I was logged in to their FTP server. It contained the following lines:

Code:
hostname="-------------"
username="--------"
password="--------"
connectionType="ftps"
mode="binary"
enableHost="false"
enableConnectionType="false"
enableAnonymous="false"

I substituted dashes for the sensitive information that was in the website. I do not have access to analyze the network traffic to see if our username and password is being transmitted in plain text to the website. It makes me nervous to see the username and password plainly written out in the html for a website; however analyzing the network traffic and securing networks is not part of my job description. So my question for people here who have this as part of their job description is as follows:

Incoming server (POP3): 995 - (requires with SSL)
Outgoing server (SMTP): 465 - (use encrypted connection SSL)

And the mail server requires user ID login and password.how do I setup a text command based email client in my Linux (Centos 5.1) to send out email through the existing email server above, which is in another machine? The email client has to be text command based because I need to use command line to send notification email from anothar application installed in my Linux (Centos 5.1) Since the email client will only be used to send email notification, I don't require setting up of an email server in my linux.

Debian :: How To Setup A Secure Squid Proxy

Jan 13, 2016

I need to setup a squid 3 proxy with https bumping. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with squid and https in general.

I already perfomed the following steps:

1.) compile from source

Code: Select all./configure --with-openssl   --enable-ssl-crtd
make
make install

2.) configuration (http)
I used this guide: [URL]

3.) configuration (https)

The server is now working for http and https, but is the server secure, too? Is the default config already secure or do I need to configure additional security features? (e.g. things like cert validation, cert pinning, [dont know what's importend], ...)

Server :: How To Setup Diskless PXE Client On Debian Lenny (HPC)

Aug 8, 2010

I currently have a debian lenny high performance cluster running seamlessly using dhcp and tftpd-hpa. All nodes are completely diskless, and i would like to keep it that way. I now would like to have a client boot over local into a full KDE desktop.

Here's the cache.
1. I would like the client to also be a node. I would like it to handle processing as the other nodes do, but this one with a full desktop, with ALL data and privileges accessible.
2. The client will have its own workstation graphics. It will need to have that driver loaded without slowing the system.
3. Client will need to be able to use its own usb, bd-rom, dvd, audio, etc. even though it will be booting into the HPC.
4. Wireless. I cannot run 70 ft of lan across an apartment. not happening.

The idea is a media center applicable "powerhouse" with high-end power and graphics for easy media editing, 3d creation, and gaming. Will also be used for webcache over all local, file sharing, and other server applications.

HPC specs:
-headnode: hp compaq p4-ht 3.2 ghz, 4x500gb, 4gb mem, gigabit ethernet, wireless-N
-nodes: 4x p4-ht 2.2 ghz, 2gb mem, no-name brand slim desktops; 2x panasonic toughbooks p4-mobile 1.8 ghz, 1.5gb mem; 3x gateway p3 unknown specs; and 1 hp 530 notebook 1.6ghz core2 duo, 1.5gb mem
-client: hp compaq core2 duo 2.13 ghz, 4gb mem, wireless n, bd-rom, 2x dvd-rom, usb 3.0 card, bluetooth, 1gb AGP nvidia geforce 6800 dual-dvi, no hd.
I need to know how to set up this PXE.

I have Mutt working great with my GMail account, so that's good. I do have a question though. Using the application Calcurse (featured on Lifehacker a few days ago, [URL] I am at a loss to figure out how to interface with Google Calendar. Is there a trick that Im missing, or does anyone know of another terminal app that plays better with Google Calendar?

Also, I was looking for a 'Digital Clock', essentially, again, a terminal/text based large print clock; similar to the one in the lower left corner on the attached pic. I was looking for a telnet server from the Atomic Clock, but no such luck so far.....

I separately downloaded the source from the OpenSSL website. The source distribution doesn't have it either. There is a whole bunch of .pem files. Can I use any one of them?

Ubuntu Servers :: Secure File Server Setup

Dec 29, 2010

I am going to set up a file server on Ubuntu. I have searched a while, but can't seem to find a guide to what I want. The requirements specifications are the following:File server: possible to upload, change and download files.Linux (Ubuntu) clients, Windows clients if possible.Access restriction to deny access to other than registered users.Only the user should be able to read the content of the files.Ideally root should not be able to see the individual files, but in worst case it is ok for root to see the files.Root should not be able to open the files.Point 1-3 is easy to find out how to set up. But I can't seem to find a way to deny root to view the files. The only solution I can think of is to encrypt files or a whole folder, but I don't know how to set it up.

The setup is for a home network, but the server used as a file server will have a web server as well. If someone manages to get access to the server I don't want them to be able to read the files.

Obviously this isn't the ideal setting.After lots of reading and Googling I can't figure out how to allow only my Vista laptop to use the proxy.I'm a little lost with the ACL settings required.

General :: File Share Security The Setup Is Not Secure At All?

Been messing around with Ubuntu 9.1 for the last few weeks and am loving it so far. Been trying to get in the terminal and learn a little something, to no avail. LOL I have been googling and searching the site today for info on networking. My Linux box is a desktop, with my main HDD mounted with music, and movies and some other stuff. My intent is to network the two laptops in the house (Windows XP and Windows 7) to the Linux box so I can listen to my music and watch movies when not in the office. I have found some info, mostly involving Samba, and plan to install Samba tonight and fiddle with it. My issue was with security. I have read a few posts and they talk about the fact that if you share files in this manner, the set up is not secure at all. Is this something i should really be concerned about? If the folders I share only have my music and videos in them,

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup OpenVPN In Order To Connect Back To Home Network While Traveling For Secure Browsing?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.

As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?

To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

Networking :: Connecting Debian Client To Voyager Client Via Crossover Cable?

Jan 6, 2011

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

[code]....

I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?

The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?
