I was wondering if "Standard system utilities" is like a "must-have". I have installed Debian without "Standard system utilities" and "Desktop Environment" and everything went fine. I'm wondering if I may be missing anything?

I generally de-select every possible option but what exactly is under the package group name 'Standard System'?ScreenshotObviously when I de-select 'Standard System', basically my installation of 'netinst' is almost immediately completed and I'm asked to reboot. How can I see or find out what exactly am I omitting from the system?

standard Linux installation utilities split the root file-system and the home file-system on two separate but relatively equal-sized partitions? For example, when I put fedora on an 80GB disk, it automatically gave the root file-system 32GB and home 30GB and the swap 8GB of space. However, since my home file-system has a directory with 28GB of files in it, why is my root file-system reading 100% usage? Is the home FS overlaid on top of the root FS? Is there an advantage to doing this? I just made a boot partition (50mb or so), a root partition (90% of the disk space) and a swap (4%-5% disk space).

Can use a WIN XP appliance (from my old PCLinuxOS) as guest there without any issues.
Added a second guest - Jessie 8.0 KDE 64 bit. Works, but no seamless display, mouse issue ...
So added inside guest:
non-X11 guest utilities + X11 guest utilities from the repositories
(These utilities are meant to be run inside the the virtual machine. They provide closer integration ...)
I simply don't know, how to run those utilities ...

I am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.
My upgrade route with Ubuntu is to do a complete fresh install - then reacquire all my favorite applications and packages using a combination of Add/Remove and Synaptic. This is a time-consuming process, and I generally forget several packages the first time through.Is it possible to automate the packages (and/or applications installation so that I get everything rebuilt for the new os in a single pass?

if I install some benchmarking utilities via WINE, should I expect inaccurate results? I know about other benchmarking apps such as phoronix, but there are so many more I want to use that are of the .exe nature.

Anyway, the system finally boots and I haven't had any further problems, but I somehow notice the booting to be a bit slower since this error appeared and I don't like watching the red letters that say "failed" every time I switch the computer on. I googled this before posting it, and other users have had this issue, but the solutions that worked for them didn't work for me.
This is the content of my /etc/network/interfaces file:

Since I'm running Sid. Let's assume package foo has been upgraded via apt-get dist-upgrade, and it causes a serious bug so that Sid is never able to fully start up, and is not even able to get me to the console to remove the package.
(Reword: let's assume that I upgraded the system despite apt-listbug warning me that foo had serious issues.)
Is it possible for me to remove the package and get back in? Everything I've seen online assumes that I could at least access console--but this hypothetical bug doesn't allow that.
If it were in Arch, I would just boot from the live dist, arch-chroot into the / directory, and try to remove foo via pacman. But Debian doesn't offer a live disk past Stable, so I suspect that this wouldn't work with a Wheezy disk?
Am I asking for an impossible situation, or can a troublesome package be removed from an unresponsive Sid?
Install One :
Installed Debian Squeeze onto my laptop using the netinst cd. During installation, I did not have access to the internet and installed "Standard System" during tasksel.
Install Two :
Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".
Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?
I have a dead system that was running Debian Linux (lenny). I can boot into emergency mode, but nothing else. I will likely have to reinstall Debian. I've read lots of things online about how to get a list of currently installed packages. Which is fine and dandy if the system is working and I can log into it. I'm basically wanting to extract such a list from a hard drive containing an installation I can't log into normally. I can access the filesystem just fine, and nothing related to aptitude has been damaged.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.
I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?
I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.
Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?
over here on my desktop I have KDE 4.6.4 running, updated from 4.6.0 through all intermediate steps. In the last few days I feel, that it got a bit unstable and I think, I have messed it up again, with doing some stupid things in the repository management. But of course, I dont remember what I did...
So I am asking myself, if I could reset the system to the state where it came from: KDE 4.6.0, including all the updates from the standard openSUSE repositories.
I would do it as follows:
1. deactivate the additional KDE repositories and X11 from OBS (I needed it for installing xbindkeys)
2. switch packages to the standard repositories, which came with openSUSE, and also switch the packages to Packman
3. run an update, or how it is called, the switch back to 4.6.0
would this work, or would I completly mess the system up?
I then would leave it like it is, with the only additional repos: Packman
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

I am new to Debian and I am trying to apt to install some packages When trying to get tango-icon-theme it says: E: Package tango-icon-theme has no installation candidate And when trying to get arandr it says:
E: Couldn't find package arandr
What should I do to fix this?
After installation the Debian Squeeze when installing some packages the system asks for the installation debian CD. I wonder how i can change the configuration so that the system can install the packages without the CD?
