General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4
Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

apt has enabled php automatically, so
/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf does have inside:

Nov 4, 2010I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

Apr 23, 2010I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.

May 3, 2010I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.

i checked /var/log/message and /var/log/syslog nothing is here related to iptables. then i create separate file for Iptables by adding this: kern.warning /var/log/iptables.log in my rsyslog.conf it does create iptables.log file inside /var/ but its still empty

Aug 16, 2010I've found that I need to use pppoeconf, but it doesn't work. I have default Debian kernel with PPPOE module. After looking for the modem it gives me the following message:"Sorry, I scanned 1 interface, but the Access Concentrator of you provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also another pppoe process which controls the modem."pppoeconf detected the interface successfully (eth0, I have only one interface), but doesn't work. It does, however, work with my router connecting without any issues.

Jun 25, 2011i didn't know where to post this so i decided on "General" section. I'm working with kind of an "old" computer, low HDD and graphics, but decent amount of RAM and good processor ( for an old computer, and it was bough for company use ) So i want to speed things up a bit, i don't mind waiting a bit longer when GIMP is loading, but FireFox is giving me issues, loads slower, and internet isn't as fast as its suppose to be, i started playing a game on facebook recently and it was fine, but lately it takes for ever to load and do things in it, i tweaked some options in it, and its better, but now when i click response time is slower ( altogether is quicker but still not enough )
Is there anything i can do?

Jun 14, 2010I have the most recent version of Ubuntu, and I'd like to optimize it. I have 888MB RAM and an older celeron processor. Here are the only things I use on a daily basis:
Firefox
Rdesktop
Apache2 / PHP5 / Mysql
OpenOffice
Pidgin (IRC chat client)
I feel like there is a lot of extra stuff I could remove, but I don't want to just start removing random things that may break dependencies, etc. I want to do this b/c it seems like my desktop is sluggish most of the time.
Ubuntu / Apple :: Optimize 10.10 For EMac
Oct 19, 2010I snagged the 10.10 alternate install ISO for PPC and got it up and running on a 1ghz G4 eMac with 1gb of RAM and a 60gb HDD. It runs... OK. It could be a lot better. I'm planning to shut off the bluetooth and CUPS services since neither apply to this system; are there any other services I can shut down, or any other tricks I could do to make it run a bit more smoothly?
What about alternate window managers? I realise that the PPC platform kinda limits me, but what about TWM or FVWM?
Ubuntu :: Optimize Boot Speeds?
May 3, 2011Unfortunately my ubuntu installation wakes 31 seconds to get to the boot screen, almost identical to my windows 7 partition. I've already configured grub to my needs, so reducing the counter has already been done, but I have no idea what else to do for my boot speeds when it comes to ubuntu. If anything I can live with these times, but it would be very nice to have it boot at lightning speeds I may even buy a SSD when I get the money.

The file system is EXT3. the server got 4 gigs of memory.There is a program in windows that writes files to the share.I searched and i found that there is some commands that you add and they boost the performance.
I got complains that the writes are not fast enough. Before me another IT guy configured the file server and it was faster, what he told my customer that he changed some command of cache but i dont know exactly what he did. Server :: Debian 5.0.6 Too Much RAM Usage
Oct 30, 2010I'd been using Directadmin on my Debian 5.0 machine earlier . I had 1GB ram and a lot of memory was used up. Sometimes even the OS crashed as the programs couldn't allocate memory. I increased my RAM to 3GB but still the RAM usage sometimes just flow up to 1GB although normally DirectAdmin doesn't use more than 200MB . Restarting the server fixes the issue but then it climbs up again and comes down to a 200-400MB again by itself. Cached Memory was also being too much and sometimes even Swap Partition gets used up .Just to be sure that it's not the Bugged OS, today I installed the latest Debian 5.0.6 Net-inst on my machine . I allocated just 128MB of ram to it because it was just a testing machine. I installed it without the swap partition since I thought I will make a swap-file if it is required. I did not even update the OS rather I just installed Openssh-server and everything else was default as in Debian 5.0.6 . When server started, only 20MB ram was being used .
I just logged into my server afer about 5 hours and saw 112 MB ram being used out of which 91MB was cached. I haven't installed anything so why is this happening ?Why is this happening when I just installed the default Operating System and didn't even run an apt-get update on it.I think my previous operating system with Directadmin was also having similar issues.
