Debian :: Netsat Output And My Interpretation?
Jul 14, 2010
I'm new to deian and linux in general. I have a project to build a web server. All is going well - have LAMP configured and now reading/learning about security. I've just done a netstat -tuan to look at what ports I have open. It gave me this. I've managed to find out what a mojrity of the ports are...some i'm not sure of. Just wondering if anyone could enlighten me by answering a few questions on my notes:
1. what are the ports with ???. Can i disable them?
2. how comes some ports are listed twice? Do i need to disable them more than once.
3. Are the notes i've made correct...can i remove the ones I'm thinking of removing?

I'm looking to setup a transparent proxy, which (if I understand correctly) will allow me to monitor/control http traffic on my home lan with the use a log analyser.I'm planning on following this guide Yes... I'm cheap and don't wanna buy another NIC.My question: How does this all work? I get that http traffic goes to my server first, and then to the destination address, but how? What is stopping the other computers on my network from going straight to my router? Is my interpretation of a transparent proxy correct?

Last week my server crashed. I'm trying to diagnose the cause.
This is the relevant error message in /var/log/messages:
Code:
I'm assuming that I can conclude, then, that apache/httpd was the cause of the memory leak?
Next, I've been tracking my memory usage. Using top, this is an average memory load level for my server:
Code:
I'd like to confirm if my understanding of this data is correct, because Plesk indicates that my memory usage is only 50% or less. (Though I have read a number of reports indicating that Plesk's measurements are frequently wrong.)
Top says: Of the 2,073,156K total memory, 1,982,572K (95.63%) is being used, 90,584K (4.37%) is free. Of that sum, 421,948K (20.35%) are being used as buffers. Additionally, of the 2,096,472K of Swap, 60K is used, and 887,700K (42.34%) is cached.
My questions: Is my memory actually being 95% used? Or is the buffered quantity (20.35%) not a use of physical/virtual memory? (i.e. is it disk usage?) Does the amount of cached Swap influence the percentage of physical/virtual memory being used?
In other words, who is correct? Plesk says I'm using 40-50% of my memory, whereas top says 85-95%.

I'd like to cut the 5th field of df command's output, but I'm not successful code...
I tried out every option I could think of... Not successful yet...
What I want, is to have the used space, like the 6% in this example, in the output, and nothing else.

I was just downloading a few torrent files when all of a sudden my network connection just died. I checked the output of dmesg an I saw this:
[25148.587960] [UFW BLOCK] IN=wlan0 OUT= MAC=00:26:c7:05:3f:c8:00:24:a5:34:93:91:08:00 SRC=192.168.106.1 DST=192.168.106.5 LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=26519 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=4631 DPT=80 WINDOW=5840 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0
[25174.135763] [UFW BLOCK] IN=wlan0 OUT= MAC=00:26:c7:05:3f:c8:00:24:a5:34:93:91:08:00 SRC=150.101.154.95 DST=192.168.106.5 LEN=58 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=114 ID=3696 PROTO=UDP SPT=18091 DPT=51413 LEN=38
[code]...
Of course their were hundreds of lines just like these, but just so you get the idea. I had to physically power down my router in order to get connected again, then all of this continued. I'm clueless in the networking department, but this seems alarming to me , as some of those source IP's are external. Is someone probing me? Or is this normal with torrent activity? I've never seen so much activity by my firewall. I recognize port 51413 is for transmission, but 3389? That's for remote desktop connections as far as I know.

Tried doing Code: Select allsystemctl lxc stop but it hangs with no output. I've tried letting it go overnight, no luck.
strace on the systemctl pid shows:
Code: Select allppoll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, NULL, NULL, 8
Tried lxc-stop on my containers and it just hangs as well. apt-file shows no lxc-kill package available.
I just want to restart my containers. Debian 8.

I want an image viewer to show the images in a directory in a random order. For that, I made the following script:
cd /home/DIRECTORY
ls > files
sort -R files
cat files | gpicview
Everything looks fine, but gpicview doesn't open the images! I also tried it with pqiv but instead of just opening the images, it opens a dialog asking me which of the files I want to open.

On my pc, video playback is not as it should be. Somehow, not all video frames are displayed. In smplayer, I have video output set to x11 (slow). If I set it to anything else, it's worse. How do I know exacly what video output to choose ? Is video output determined by the video card ? My video card is ATi Radeon 9200 SE. What video output should I set in smplayer ?

After upgrading our vmware template server from debian wheezy to debian jessie the output of the df command seems broken with regards to the root and /usr mount. We are using LVM on this machine.I've been searching for quite some time for a solution, but lack of linux knowledge is bothering me to get it fixed. The system seems to run fine without issues.
I can temporarily resolve the issue (untill next boot) by doing a lazy umount and a new mount of for example the /usr.I found a thread that something has changed in the way df presents the devices, however it is not consistent in our case (it shows a mix of both) and it seems to go wrong at an earlier stage during boot.Either show all dm devices or mapper devices is fine with me although I have a slight preference for the mapper names as it makes it more obvious LVM is being used.
Code: Select alldf -h 11:12
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/dm-0 922M 391M 467M 46% /
udev 10M 0 10M 0% /dev

Im trying to be able to output video to my tv with a low end atom cpu box(link below) running debian lenny. I realize it wont likely be true HD video. I also realize I wont be getting surround sound. My tv is a little bit older so it doesnt have a monitor input or I would have tried that. It does have HDMI and component though and i have a DVI to hdmi adapter and audio cables that will work once I have a video out solution. It does have a PCIE expansion bay but the power supply is only like 150w so i dont know that Ill be able to use a regular video card. I had considered some sort of usb output but dont know if any of that will work on linux. Any suggestions? Im pretty novice with the whole computer on my tv area and dont have alot of money to build a whole new system or i would just do that.

Excuse me if this is in the wrong place, I am new to the forum and Debian.
Today, while installing Ubuntu, I had a strange issue with my laptop in which after installation, I heard startup sounds and had no video display. After hours of frustration and about 7 install disks, I plugged my laptop into another monitor, and low and behold, it appears both of my desktops are on the external monitor. After trying to solve this issue, I decided to give the Debian Gnome live CD a try, but I now have the same issue.

I have created a small script to compile a network weathermap using the cacti RRD files. The script reads the *.conf files and outputs an html and a png file. When I manually run the script it works normally.
I have edited my crontab with the crontab -e command to run this script every minute
The problem is script itself works when I manually call it but when it is run using crontab it doesn't do anything. The cron.log shows that the script IS being run every minute with no errors but the files (html and png) do not get written. What am I doing wrong and how do troubleshoot this?

After a lot of messing around and research, I figured out how to actually get my bluetooth headphones to connect and stay connected. Although once I shut them off, remove the device and re-add it using Blueman.
Right now, `pavucontrol` shows "Headphones (unplugged)" and there is no sound coming out of the speakers. But there is no sound coming out of the headphones either. They are set to the fallback. I've opened `alsamixer` and made sure everything was turned up. Still, no sound.
Since `bt-audio` isn't on Jessie, I don't know what I should do. It seems like this may be the missing step but I am unsure.

Fairly new to debian and linux and general. I have an install of debian wheezy (to run LinuxCNC). I went in the graphical interface to the 'monitor' section and changed the screen resolution. I had two monitors, one labeled monitor and another (I think) Lenovo Monitor.
There was a check box in the screen monitor window that said something like, "Don't use this display." I figured it might turn off the lenovo and default to the generic monitor listed. I clicked it and my monitor turned OFF!! I tried another monitor (Dell in this case) and same thing, no video output.
I asked on the LinuxCNC forum and googled, but I just dont' seem to be able to figure out what or how to get to the solution.
I have been able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal. But, I can't find any the right files and found that the xrandr command 'should' work, but doesn't.
Whenever I issued the xrandr command (other than man xrandr), I get "Can't Open Display"
I did find two outputs VGA1 and LVDS1 in this file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and this coincides with what I saw in the monitor window. These are the 'output' types and if the xrandr command worked I'd issue something like : xrandr --ouptut LVDS1 --auto
I read about xorg.conf, but I could not find any xorg.conf files in the etc/X11 folder. In some of the info I found, the xorg.conf was replaced in this or a recent version of Debian by something else and confuses me.
One person had a similar issue and he got to this directory: $HOME/.e/e/config/standard" and found files such as:
"e_randr.cfg" plus "e_randr.1.cfg" thru "e_randr.9.cfg"
But, I can't get to that folder. How to turn on my monitor display?

I have no more sound on my debian. The only audio output I can find is the "dummy output".
When I try ask to aplay -l to display my sound cards, here's the output :
Code: Select alldevice_list:268: aucune carte son n'a été trouvée... <=> french for "no sound card found"
But I can still see my card(s) using lspci :
Code: Select all00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device fa49

My notebook thinkpad w500 has two video cards, intel / radeon. When i test some 3d games by wine or some videos by mpv using dri_prime=1 to dynamic enable radeon card, the game/video window always tearing, see bug report [URL] ....
So I try to start second xserver directly use radeon card, command like this:
$xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session -- :1 -ac -configdir radeon (/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config already changed to allowed_users=anybody)
I put 20-radeon.conf into /etc/X11/radeon, which is:
Section "Device"
Identifier "radeonGPU"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection
If i just put 20-intel.conf into /etc/X11/radeon (just use intel IDG), the second xserver runs ok. Just using radeon DIS the second xserver started without any conntected output. run DISPLAY=:1 xrandr could confirm that, all disconnetted, so it's black screen on second xserver vtn, and default xserver vt7 still ok.
Am i missing something to config second xserver using radeon DIS, or it's not possible...

I'm using mplayer with shell-fm, in my shell-fm.rc I have the line
extern = nice -10 mplayer -really-quiet -ao jack -cache 512 -noar -nojoystick -nolirc -noconsolecontrols -nomouseinput -demuxer lavf -lavfdopts format=mp3 -af-adv force=5:list=resample -af resample=44100:1:2:extrastereo-1.5 -
This to me at least produces a pleasant audio output but despite the -really-quiet option mplayer is still outputting text, generally something like
[mp3 @ 0xa3f5380] max_analyze_duration reached
I've also tried the -msglevel all=-1 option and had a play with the MPLAYER_VERBOSE environmental variable, all with no joy.

I've been having problems with my hdmi output not working since I first installed debian on my laptop(probably 2 years now). The reason the output wasn't working is because I can't turn my onboard graphics off in my bios. So I had a bright idea, why don't I just blacklist the i915 driver?
So I did, I updated the initramfs and restarted my computer. It started up showed the startup sequence on my laptop screen, my dell monitor (vga output) and on the tv (hdmi output) but then the start up sequence froze on the hdmi output while the other 2 screens continued to work. I do lspci -v and the i915 driver still shows up for the vga controller.
I don't have the nvidia drivers setup and I don't have an xorg.conf setup at the moment because I get the no screens error when I do. What should I do?
previous stuff : [URL] .... <--- I have no clue how I got the hdmi output working when I posted that thread.

I'm using Debian Lenny with an nVidia 8400GS. Before I changed motherboards (and graphic cards, as apparently AGP doesn't exist anymore) this set-up worked fine, but with the new hardware, I can't use the TV as a second screen anymore: there's simply no image going through. All that's visible on the screen is "No video signal".I've tried the proprietary nVidia driver and nvidia-settings, but nvidia-settings doesn't even see the second screen. I've tried adding it manually to xorg.conf, but again, nothing.
