Debian Hardware :: No Video Output To Second Screen Through HDMI?

I'm using Debian Lenny with an nVidia 8400GS. Before I changed motherboards (and graphic cards, as apparently AGP doesn't exist anymore) this set-up worked fine, but with the new hardware, I can't use the TV as a second screen anymore: there's simply no image going through. All that's visible on the screen is "No video signal".I've tried the proprietary nVidia driver and nvidia-settings, but nvidia-settings doesn't even see the second screen. I've tried adding it manually to xorg.conf, but again, nothing.
I realise this is an issue that has been covered a lot, one way or another, but at least from what I've been able to find, most of the discussion centres around getting HDMI audio to work. However, I have problems even getting the video to work from my laptop's HDMI output.
I have an HP dv6z-se, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 (1 Gb) video card and using F14/KDE. My problem is that when I go to System Settings/Display/Monitor, Fedora doesn't actually seem to realise my computer even has an HDMI output and only displays options for VGA and my integrated screen.
When I plug it into my LCD screen, sometimes I get a 'No Signal' message and sometimes I get garbled static and a message about unrecognised input and the frequency it's coming at.
I read elsewhere in the forum that someone was able to get video working by editing their xorg.conf file, so I went in and tried to see if I could replicate that, but none of the files in my xorg.conf.d folder had anything related to video outputs (as far as I can tell at this point).

I'm having trouble getting any output from my laptop's HDMI socket. I've had a search and can only find sound problems, mine is no visible output whatsoever.
Let me describe the setup: Laptop has a HDMI socket which I have never used before, HDTV has 4 HDMI inputs, I just bought a HDMI cable to connect the two to try it.
After connection I go to System->Preferences->Monitors and the TV is detected fine with the correct description and offers me 3 different resolutions. xrandr also works and gives me the same thing:
However none of the options display ANYTHING on the TV. The screen remains black, not even a flicker.
I have connected the laptop to the TV before using an analogue VGA (monitor) cable which worked in the same way with no problems.
Could this be an encryption/DRM/DVI problem? I have suspicions about the cable too because it is new and I haven't seen it work, but it wouldn't detect the correct TV description and resolutions would it? It was sold as an XBOX360/PS3 HDMI cable, is there a difference? It looks like a standard HDMI male-male cable.
Other things I've tried: Log off and log back on to restart the X server reboot
script which adjusts my NVIDIA settings to HDMI and also my Audio output to my digital output. I feel its quite a lot of clicking to get my signal to my LCD.So I hope somebody already had this idea and can give me the script or can assist me in writing it myself. I think its not a complicated script. i guess its only 2 lines. But i am not exactly a pro in Ubuntu..So as i said i have a NVIDIA graphic cardand aplay -l shows

I have noticed that, using nvidia's latest drivers, HDMi output to my 32" LCD (1920x1080) and totem or vlc, the video on my LCD gets a bit "choppy" when the image changes faster.. some bars start appearing on the moving parts of the image.. like the system is having trouble rendering the video. This doesn't happen on my laptop screen even when both displays are running at the same time.
Also, this problem doesn't appear in windows 7, everything works perfectly there with one odd thing... the picture gets "choppy" on the laptop screen when I'm running both at the same time. It's not that noticeable, but I can tell the difference between windows and ubuntu in quality and it's annoying me
I have an Okano 42" LCD TV, which I connect to my laptop via HDMI cable. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the screen at the TV's resolution of 1920x1080, and there are about 40 pixels that run over the edge of each side on the TV, making the Ubuntu toolbars invisible.The standard NVIDIA control panel doesn't have any options for correcting this (in windows it had settings for adjusting the stretch/position of the screen), so I was wondering whether there are any common tools that ubuntu users can use to adjust the relative position and stretch of a screen?
BTW I think the cause of this is that my dodgy TV isn't correctly reporting its resolution to the laptop, and unlike most branded TVs, I don't have any system settings that can be adjusted to correct this (I know the panasonic counterpart can fix this in the system menu)..
HDMI outputs video but not sound from my Acer Aspire 5738 laptop.I have tried both SMPlayer and VLC setting both audio outputs to HDMI.Those media players have always worked for me using other Linux distros.Is there another media player that I should be using?If it's important;lspci lists;Audio as ATI and Video as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500
I've been having problems with my hdmi output not working since I first installed debian on my laptop(probably 2 years now). The reason the output wasn't working is because I can't turn my onboard graphics off in my bios. So I had a bright idea, why don't I just blacklist the i915 driver?
So I did, I updated the initramfs and restarted my computer. It started up showed the startup sequence on my laptop screen, my dell monitor (vga output) and on the tv (hdmi output) but then the start up sequence froze on the hdmi output while the other 2 screens continued to work. I do lspci -v and the i915 driver still shows up for the vga controller.
I don't have the nvidia drivers setup and I don't have an xorg.conf setup at the moment because I get the no screens error when I do. What should I do?

I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...
The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.
Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?
I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through. I have Audio and Video over HDMI separately, but when I try to watch a movie, I just have Video.NVIDIA HDMI is my default, I'm using "Debian lenny amd64" and kernel is "2.6.32-trunk" on "Studio XPS 13" with "KDE 4.3".
Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
I intend to update my video card to allow the operation of all three of my monitors in a triple monitor configuration. I have a 790i motherboard with Nvidia chips, so I will most likely choose an Nvidia card for the upgrade. As I will need connections for three monitors, I will have to have two cards. It is my intention to have one large screen field spread across all three monitors. I assume the best way of doing this will be to use an SLI Bridge to link the two video cards. Thus the two video cards must be identical.
Question 01: Is this the best way of realizing a triple monitor setup?
While I am upgrading, I desire to also give the system the ability to play Blue-Ray High Def Movie one of the 1920x1200 monitors I will be using.
Question 02: What are the pitfalls of playing BD-Discs on Debian. I know I will be eventually acquiring a BD-Disc player (once the prices come down a bit more), but when shelling out for two video cards, I better think as far ahead as possible and get the two video cards that will do everything I can foresee them needing to do.
Question 03: As all of my monitors have HDMI input ports, I assume that I will need Video cards that have HDMI output ports to play full 1080P movies. Is this a valid assumption?
Question 04: Can anyone recommend a video card that does what I am wanting it to do? (This is to say Two Dual Link DVI connectors and an HDMI connector per video card with standard and high definition video playback capabilities). Keep in mind that I will most likely need to purchase two of them, to the Super Expensive Bleeding Edge cards are probably not going to be a practical option here.
Question 05: Is there a way that I can just play the BD-Discs with full resolution in a window on one of the three monitors I will have connected to the computer without having to go the HDMI route?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 w/ an ATI HD 4350 and trying to output to a CRT television over S-Video @ 640x480. Problem is the screen blanks out after ten minutes no matter how I configure my screensaver or power management settings. I've done some research regarding commands in Terminal, but I can't find anything straightforward.
Where the script is for Gnome 3. When I plug the HDMI cable, the desktop expands to include both, but disables the backlight on the laptop monitor. I have to restart gdm3 or the laptop for the brightness control to bring it back up. First, why would it turn brightness to 0, and how do I change the default of that so it stops. I plug and unplug the HDMI regualarly while I wait for a new desktop and the laptop has to pull double duty.
I just switched from Ubuntu 14.10. It never blacked out a screen on plug in or removing. That means that there must be some way to do it, however, it used Unity and this is Gnome 3.
I installed KDE. It works as well. I will use it for now, but would like to get Gnome 3 to work. My default is gdm but I think I saw I can switch it to kdm.
On my pc, video playback is not as it should be. Somehow, not all video frames are displayed. In smplayer, I have video output set to x11 (slow). If I set it to anything else, it's worse. How do I know exacly what video output to choose ? Is video output determined by the video card ? My video card is ATi Radeon 9200 SE. What video output should I set in smplayer ?
Im trying to be able to output video to my tv with a low end atom cpu box(link below) running debian lenny. I realize it wont likely be true HD video. I also realize I wont be getting surround sound. My tv is a little bit older so it doesnt have a monitor input or I would have tried that. It does have HDMI and component though and i have a DVI to hdmi adapter and audio cables that will work once I have a video out solution. It does have a PCIE expansion bay but the power supply is only like 150w so i dont know that Ill be able to use a regular video card. I had considered some sort of usb output but dont know if any of that will work on linux. Any suggestions? Im pretty novice with the whole computer on my tv area and dont have alot of money to build a whole new system or i would just do that.

Today, while installing Ubuntu, I had a strange issue with my laptop in which after installation, I heard startup sounds and had no video display. After hours of frustration and about 7 install disks, I plugged my laptop into another monitor, and low and behold, it appears both of my desktops are on the external monitor. After trying to solve this issue, I decided to give the Debian Gnome live CD a try, but I now have the same issue.
Fairly new to debian and linux and general. I have an install of debian wheezy (to run LinuxCNC). I went in the graphical interface to the 'monitor' section and changed the screen resolution. I had two monitors, one labeled monitor and another (I think) Lenovo Monitor.
There was a check box in the screen monitor window that said something like, "Don't use this display." I figured it might turn off the lenovo and default to the generic monitor listed. I clicked it and my monitor turned OFF!! I tried another monitor (Dell in this case) and same thing, no video output.
I asked on the LinuxCNC forum and googled, but I just dont' seem to be able to figure out what or how to get to the solution.
I have been able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal. But, I can't find any the right files and found that the xrandr command 'should' work, but doesn't.
Whenever I issued the xrandr command (other than man xrandr), I get "Can't Open Display"
I did find two outputs VGA1 and LVDS1 in this file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and this coincides with what I saw in the monitor window. These are the 'output' types and if the xrandr command worked I'd issue something like : xrandr --ouptut LVDS1 --auto
I read about xorg.conf, but I could not find any xorg.conf files in the etc/X11 folder. In some of the info I found, the xorg.conf was replaced in this or a recent version of Debian by something else and confuses me.
One person had a similar issue and he got to this directory: $HOME/.e/e/config/standard" and found files such as: "e_randr.cfg" plus "e_randr.1.cfg" thru "e_randr.9.cfg"
But, I can't get to that folder. How to turn on my monitor display?
I am on Opensuse 11.3 and am trying to get HDMI output on my Sanyo 36' HDTV with an ATI Mobility Radeon 4250 using the latest opensource Radeonhd driver. I have tested all the resolutions, set the refresh to Auto and set the tv to clone state, I reboot and Grub loads, and an image is now present on my television, but when I boot into my kernel the signal is lost. I have searched endlessly on the issue and can't find any sort of a solution (apparently I'm the only linux user that has experienced this, all's that comes up is Windows forums telling me to wipe and reload)
When I try to play a dvd and give mplayer no options, it defaults to "X11" for the video output, which maxes out the cpu. To get around this, firstly I tried to play the dvd using "cvidix" in the console.
I used the following command: mplayer -ao alsa -vo cvidix -fs -framedrop -stop-xscreensaver -dvd-device /dev/dvd1 dvd://1 This played the dvd, but the console text was still visible over the top of the movie; i.e. mplayer was playing in the layer beneath the console text
Then I tried using xvidix in X: mplayer -ao alsa -vo xvidix -fs -framedrop -stop-xscreensaver -dvd-device /dev/dvd1 dvd://1 This gives a green line about 5mm thick down the right side of the screen, but other than that it is ok.
I have a on-board video card (ATI Radeon HD4200) that capable to output HDMI as well as VGA.I connected both into my TV (which also have VGA input as well as HDMI). Here is the weird thing:IF I reboot my computer (9.10 64bit) with my TV set to display HDMI, then after I login at my workspace, my HDMI display got cut off at the edge! BUT my VGA display correctly when I switch to it on my TV.HOWEVER, IF I reboot my computer with my TV set to display VGA, then after I login at my workspace, my VGA display correctly AND my HDMI display correctly.What's the deal here? I am trying to use only HDMI connection and eliminate the VGA as well as the analog audio wire (which the HDMI audio is another big problem but for another post).
I'm trying to produce some screenshots of the screen in which there's a window playing a video in avi format. The problem is whenever I take a shot, the video window appears 'solid blue' in the output image. Is there any way or program with which I can capture the current frame of the video
I work at a television station and we recently purchased a System76 Meerkat ION with the intended purpose of using the HDMI out port for broadcast purposes. We have an existing AJA HA5 box which is capable of converting HDMI to HD-SDI (HD-SDI being the baseband standard in professional broadcasting).
The converter is only willing to accept the following values:
1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 1280 x 720 @ 59.94
I am wondering if it is possible to manually configure Xorg.conf (or whatever file is being edited by NVIDIA X Server Settings) to tell the HDMI output to only produce the latter resolution (1280 x 720).
im running ubutu 9.10 with the standard nvida proprietry drivers as a media center. the output is over hdmi, through a a/v reciver and onto a lcd television. my proble mis that the output is too large for the screen even whan outputting at a smaller resoultion than the native resolution of the television. this means that the top, bottom, left and right of the output is chopped off. in windows i can adjust the size of the output useing some sliders to get the image to fit the screen. however these are only available in the windows drivers and i cannot find a substitute in the ubuntu ones. one way of doing it may be to output black bard at the sides of the screen but i have no idea how to do this.

Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically : - installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD - launch all update of the OS - installed Nvidia closed driver - update alsamixer to 1.0.23
So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.

I recently switched from my integrated GPU (i5-650 Clarkdale) to a brand new nvidia GT520 but now my HDMI output is worse than my VGA : bright colors are completely saturated. I noticed that switching the HDMI colorspace from "full" to "limited" (using nvidia-settings) somewhat reduce the effects but doesn't solve it. I even tried to play with my monitor setting, with no luck. This was NOT the case previously. I'm using the latest nvidia-drivers and my 2 monitors are the same reference (LG 22" LCD - W2261VP-PF). Ubuntu 11.04.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 in a Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Intel gma X3100 integrated graphics. I occasionally use it for watching movies in an LCD TV, however when I connect it I can get it to output video fine, but audio is a no go, when I select hdmi audio in the sound options I get no sound.
