The problem, apparently, is that newer versions of Samba hit servers with multiple requests at the same time, and for some reason the Zyxel and Iomega boxes can't handle this. The best solution they've come up with is to modify the smb.conf file on your server to include this setting: "max mux = 1".

After a fresh install of Debian I came across an error Im hoping you guys can help me with. Ive searched for the error and it appears there are multiple reasons that could be causing it. To compound the problem, Im at work so I dont have the specific error messages....so I just installed Lenny (standard install, no desktop) using a USB installer and everything went very smooth. On first boot, the system paused while waiting for the root file system. After a minute or two it just errored out complaining it could not find the root file system and put me at a (vmlinuz) prompt?My guess is that I need to go into my bios and change my boot priority.. but again, thats just a guess.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a long time user of Debian, but I'm having trouble with my partitioning process. Here is where I currently stand:
I am installing the latest Wheezy build. I am trying to install debian with an encrypted LVM that spans two hard disks.
My partitioning layout is as:
1. /home
2. /root
3. swap
4. /boot
I then added partitions 1, 2 and 3 to a physical volume group. I then took that physical volume group and added it to a logical volume. Then I encrypted the logical volume, leaving the /boot partition untouched. I was under the assumption that the only partition the system needed free to reach the loading of the LVM is the /boot partition, as it holds the files necessary for booting. But when I attempt to finalize the disk, it gives an error stating, "No root file system detected". That would be an issue as it is currently sitting inside the encrypted LV. Am I wrong in including the root partition in the encrypted LV?
What is the best way of having as little of my file system non-encrypted as possible while still allowing a proper boot?
I just installed the beta 10.04 LTS with Gnome Version: 2.29.92. I want to to create a network share but when I navigate to system>preferences>personal file sharing I can not create a share. The message indicates that the feature is not available because the required package is not installed. I tried to reinstall gnome-user-share and in reinstalled without issue but I still get the same thing. What am I missing? How can I create a network share?

After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having slight issue with setting up file sharing. I have a windows 7 pc and hp proliant microserver running. I have a raid array which I am using as a share for storing music, pictures etc. When I reboot the debian server I can't connect to the server from the windows 7 PC (I have mapped a network drive) until I go on to the server and restart samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart - then everything works fine. I can ping the server with both ip and hostname but the network drive does not connect - this is straight after a reboot. Is the /etc/init.d/samba restart doing something differently to when the server boots? I have read several posts relating to printer sharing issues which point to samba not starting before cups so I am wondering if samba is starting before some of the relevant networking services.

I know that what I am asking is possible. It is a big reason why Unix was/is so successful. I am so new at this that I am not sure how to set it up. What I know to do is to log into each user one at a time and download a package into the users home directory. With seven users, that creates seven downloads of the same package. That is a huge waste of space. How do I download a package once and allow all seven users to run the same package?

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
My system from and after that at startup as it was doing a file system check I got this:

I will setup a small HD or SSD/CF card for the OS, and a MD raid for the data drives.The total size of the raid will be either 3 or 4TB, depending. Now, I need to figure out what filesystem to use on top of this raid.My criteria is as follows:
1. Support for large files. I can't imagine anything larger than about 1.2TB, but the 4GB of, say, fat32 just isn't enough.
2. Robust. I don't want it falling apart on me; nothing too unstable.
3. (and this is most important): Good Undelete support. I got burned recently when a software glitch managed to rm -rf my EXT4 drive. All the file data is still there, but all the metadata is gone. I *DO NOT* want that happening with this. I want to be able to do a "RM / -RF", immediately unmount it, and then recover *all* of the deleted data. Obviously, when data is overwritten it's overwritten, but I don't want to lose all my metadata if a "RM -RF" happens. FAT-32 is the model I'm looking at: You can usually recover deleted files if anything happens to the drive.
So, what are my options?EXT2 looks like a possibility. EX4 is *clear out*, unless there's some nice utility/mode that keeps a backup of all deleted metadata etc.
Is there recommended file system for boot partition. Debian default use ext2. Why? Can it be used ext4? I know the difference between ext2 and ext4. But why, currently in Debian, boot partition is ext2 and all others are formated with ext3...

Is it possible to disable all passwords in debian. I do not need any security usernames and passwords. I don't want type sudo all the times and i want free acces all the time. With debian i allways have some premission problems and why i need a password for my home computer?

My goal ist to install Debian Jessie on a drive with a btrfs subvolume scheme. This is my first time using btrfs and also my first Jessie installation.
My experience is, that partman creates btrfs file systems but doesn´t support btrfs subvolumes (why not?).
I successfully created btrfs subvolumes manually in a shell session during ("expert") installation and manually mounted them to the desired mount points in /target. Installation went through until grub2 installation, which failed.
Is there a best practice to install Debian (Jessie) on a btrfs file system with subvolumes? I want to use subvolumes for /, /home, /var/log and /var/lib/mysql.
i get file system errors on boot up. found logs in /var/logs but cant access them. second best thing i can do is to re-install debian but no one seems to want to say how thats done. my disk wont run in wine (some error i dont remember) so i cant use my CD /flashdrive to re-install.
1) i need to read the log files and try to fix the install
2) if i cant fix i need to know how to wipe the OS and do a fresh install
I'm having difficulties mounting an FTP address to my file system automatically during boot. After a bit of research I have discovered a package called curlftpfs, I've installed this package using aptitude and I had no errors.
I've successfully mounted an FTP address manually using curlftpfs at the command line and proved to myself that this is working as it should...However, I can't get this to mount automatically and I am receiving the following error during boot when I try and mount it through /etc/fstab...
Error connecting to ftp: Failed to connect to (IP address of server): Network is unreachable
My research indicates this package should be able to do this.
I'm still a learner when it comes to Linux, but could this be because TCP/IP services are not started at the time of mounting the filesystems? I've tried a continuous ping at this computer whilst it is booting and I don't get a response until after /etc/fstab has been processed. If this is the reason, can I start them these processes earlier?
Another option would be to have a script/command run when the computer boots, but prior to MySQL loading. If this is possible, it would also satisfy my problems.
I have iMac 2.4GHz with rEFIT installed. I installed Unity on one of the partition. Kernel is still 2.6.38.8. I am getting error message when I run the command
