View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently got a server up, and there's Debian on it. Text-based debian, no GUI. And i quitte like it, but i have one problem. In windows i can start program a, minimalize it and then start program b. But lets say i create a program with an infitite loop that only prints hello world on my debian server, I can't do anything else while its running, i have to press ctrl+c to be able to do something else. So my question is: is there a way to "minimalize" my self-written program to do something else, while its running, and to switch back later?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a regular user of Ubuntu in my laptop of ASUS UL80VT. The problem is, specially from the version 10 ubuntu has become somewhat unstable(however ridiculous it sounds). And I was thinking about switching to a serious distro anyway, because I think I have crossed the threshold of linux newbie. Problem is, since ubuntu itself is a fork of debian, can the same problems arise in debian too? Besides since I am running a laptop, driver issues are a concern. Ubuntu did not gave me much trouble with driver, except couple of function keys. The question is how much support I can get from debian 5 for my laptop. Since its karnel is a bit old, and my laptop is a new model. There is a good chance that lots of incompatibilities will arise. In a forum thread I read people referring to version 6 for the laptop? Can someone clarify the issue. I can compile the latest karnel after installation of debian 5 if thats an issue. Still, will it be a proper remedy?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing Debian Squeeze
I installed the Nvidia installer: NVIDIA-Linux-x8~.86.14-pkg1.run I configured the xorg.conf file and changed the driver from nv to nvidia. I also removed "load dri"
When I use startx I get this error and it won't give me a desktop:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available
This is all I remember doing with Lenny. Apparently there is something else I need to do with Squeeze?
I'm running Lenny, and I've always used aptitude. The upgrade instructions on Debian's website say that apt-get is preferred for doing the upgrade to Squeeze, and also says that apt-get now provides equivalent functionality. So is there any reason to continue to use aptitude after upgrading to Squeeze, and if so, will there be any problems caused by having used apt-get for the upgrade? Or will there be problems caused by switching to apt-get after using aptitude before the upgrade?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a small set of users and apps that are currently running on an Ubuntu server, and the whole system has been backed up.
I want to swith the whole box over to Debian, but still maintain user home directories, logins, and such.
I've already done: dpkg --get-selections, but I'm wondering, what else do I need to do to completely switch the box from Ubuntu to Debian?
It will move from Januty, to Lenny.
System: Debian 8.1
DE: XFCE 4.10
DM: LightDM
The problem is that I cannot switch between users.I have copied a script from another site, but it will only open a new lightdm in a new display (tty8) while the other user's session is still active (tty7).
/usr/local/bin/gdmflexiserver
Code: Select all#!/bin/bash
dm-tool switch-to-greeter
In xscreensaver, the same thing happens. If I click New Login, it will open a new lightdm session in a new display.I have searched in Google and these forums for some time already and I could not find any solution.I have just installed Debian 8.1 and XFCE in this computer, migrating from Debian 7.8 and Gnome. What I want is the same effect (or similar) to what gdm/gnome does.I have also found a solution that's about installing xfswitch-plugin, but it will also install gdm3 and lots of gnome dependencies.
I know this is usually with the intent of multiseat systems. I am not interested in setting up a multiseat system. What I am interested in configuring on using the console and jumping back to X session, not the other way around. Is this possible if your default desktop environment GNOME and configure GDM to do this with the novtswitch parameter mentioned here? [URL]..
I tried even playing around with Xorg, finding out from the man page Xorg server-1.4.2 it does not even have novtswitch functionality compiled X does, but I am not sure I am configured it properly, specifically because I am not doing multiseat. Does anyone have background on this to give me some guidance? I have attached the relevant conf files and logs. Let me know if more is needed. In my test environment, it switches VT anyway and the keyboard does not work. I assume my Xorg binary is not compat for this, but am I even on the right track? I did not expect the kb to go out like it did.

I've successfully install kvm with private network (nat) up running. I want to switch the kvm network using bridge mode (or host-interface), but do not success. env: nic iwl4965/ kernel 2.6.27.8/ debian etch upgrade to lenny/ kvm 0.9.1/ hardware hp 6910p The doc I follow up is at [URL] The way how i set it up is to modify /etc/network/interfaces by adding following section to enable br0
Code:
allow-hotplug br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports wlan0
bridge_fd 9
[code]....
However, the problem is the guest os, which starts with -hda k1.img, can not access to the internet. Is there any step I miss? or it is because wireless does not support bridge (I've heard doc says that wireless does not support wireless bridge)?
Is it possible to switch users in Debian without entering a password, as in Ubuntu Maverick? I already tried adding a nopasswdlogin group but it did not work, even though the "don't ask for password on login" entry in the login manager is no longer greyed out. Replacing gdm3 with gdm also did not work.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI found out that my installation was incomplete. So I reinstalled Debian using the businesscard image on a DVD. It worked fine, but I have a hardware constraint on my computer. I have two SATA hard drives and one SATA CD/DVD drive, and only two SATA connections on the motherboard. So, to install Debian I had to remove one hard drive and put the CD/DVD drive. When I saw that Debian was working, I removed the CD/DVD drive, and that's when Debian stopped booting. It said it couldn't find tty and opened BusyBox, giving me a command-line interface, and the line started with (initramfs) before the commands (with the parenthesis).

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat is the general way to switch the keyboard layout?
What works for me currently is the custom Section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/kbd.conf.
However this section must include Option "Device" "/dev/input/by-path/..." which identifies the current keyboard. This works fine for my laptop keyboard.
However when I attach USB keyboard, keyboard switching does not work.
I also found somewhere it should be done via /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work for me at all.
I have HP Compaq 6530b laptop running Debian Wheezy AMD64. I have a docking station with a monitor supporting 1680x1050 resolution and the laptop monitor with 1440x900. The video is integrated Intel mobile series 4.Both monitors are identified and working OK. When I use the laptop monitor standalone it runs at the native resolution. When connected to the docking station I can choose dual monitors with both using their native resolutions and the desktop spread on both of them (with the laptop monitor being primary and containing the taskbar and icons). If I choose to mirror the display it sets itself to a lower resolution of 1280x1024 that is supported by both monitors.
The problem is that I want to use one monitor at a time. If I close the lid of the laptop it turns off both monitors instead of using the docking station. When the lid is closed I want the bigger docking station monitor to be primary and working at native resolution and if I open the laptop or remove the laptop from the docking station to use the laptop monitor at it's native resolution.I had Debian Lenny I386 before and it was operating as expected but I made a clean install of Wheezy amd64 and I don't know how to configure it.I don't have xorg.conf file so I don't know where it takes the settings from.
On one PC i get automatic updates allmost every day and on the other PC i haven't gotten an auto-update since the install. apt-get update runs ok. I have seen from other posts here, that stable distros are supposed to get only security updates. Why, tho, does one PC get auto-updates, the other not? Is there some switch to enable auto-updates?

What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

I have a broken touchpad primary click button so I set up the touchpad for left-handed people but when I use my wacom digital tablet, I have to switch and it's very annoying because I tend to still use the touchpad when the tablet is connected. Per Wifi Radar, the networks are seen. I selected automatic detection forboth wireless networks. I see the "connect" button, and nothing connects. Both networks are public; 1 in a public library, the other in a coffee shop. The Netgear card did have a flashing light, which I thought was okay. I last connected in the library with no password needed. My chosen hotels have wireless available. This is Kubuntu 10.04 with a gig of RAM.
