Debian Installation :: Fixing Grub2 On A EFI GPT System?

Nov 10, 2015

I installed Debian 8.2 first, then Windows 10 over it (I know, backwards, but I didn't wish to lose my customizations on Debian up to that point, and didn't realize until later that I wanted to Dual Boot). Running from a LiveCD of Debian 8.2:

Code: Select allsudo fdisk -l
Device - Start - End - Sectors - Size - Type
/dev/sda1 - 2048 - 116211711 - 116209664 - 55.4G - Linux filesystem
/dev/sda2  - 116211712 - 116244479 - 32768 - 16M - Microsoft reserved
/dev/sda3  - 116244480 - 232421375 - 116176896 - 55.4G - Microsoft basic data
/dev/sda4  - 232421376 - 234440703 - 2019328 - 986M - EFI System

[code]...

That's where I am stuck. I'm a bit new to Debian & Linux still and I've never dabbled with Grub2, I imagine I can't mount /dev/sda4 because in chrooted into /dev/sda1 and it can't see /dev/sda4 at this point (what I'm thinking anyway). So I try:

Code: Select allroot@debian:/# fdisk -l

fdisk: cannot open /proc/partitions: No such file or directory/I imagine that's what it is, but I don't know a way around that. I want to dual boot Windows 10 & Debian 8.2 on a UEFI (or EFI?) system with a GPT Disk. No guide I have found for fixing Grub2 or getting Dual Booting working with Debian then Windows installed have covered both things at the same time. I just have to be special I guess.

Debian :: Lenny: Error On Fixing Broken Packages?

Aug 25, 2011

I have Lenny in a multi-boot system on a HP Pavilion DV-1000 laptop, and yesterday when I logged in, noticed the red (-) icon on the right of the top panel. Mouse over it gave the message: "An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu to see what is ". On doing so, Synaptic came up with "You have 3 broken packages on your system! Use the "Broken" filter to locate them". Selecting "Broken dependencies" resulted in the "base-files", base-passwd", and "dpkg" being listed. All three had "Installed Version" the same as "Latest Version", but marked in red in the check boxes.

Did "Edit"->"Fix Broken Packages" which marked the packages green. Clicking "Apply" gave a summary list: coreutils, gawk, gcc-4.3-base, libacl1, libattr1, libc6, libgcc1, libselinux1, libstdc++6, and izma as the packages that needed to be installed. Clicked "Apply" and got: "E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libc6" A Google search indicated several people had run into this problem, but I could not find one consistent solution that seemed to address the problem completely.

Debian :: Errors When Trying To Install Via Apt-get

Jul 29, 2011

So I recently purchased a Linux Virtual server and I've got everything configured pretty much except for PHP5 for Apache. I keep getting this error when trying apt-get install php5 and apt-get update:

[Code]...

I checked my sources.list file and it's setup correctly, and I even added ftp.us.debian.org but it's still not working.I'm pretty familiar with Linux and can't figure this one out. The server is connected to the internet as I can access my websites from the internet and SSH into the server, and the firewall is configured to allow SSH, HTTP, and FTP. I believe apt uses HTTP and FTP so it shouldn't be blocking anything.

Debian Configuration :: Apt-get Errors ?

Feb 14, 2011

compName:/home/usrName# apt-get update

I don't have this problem when I take this laptop to work and connect to the network there, so I thought it must be a problem with the way my modem/router is configured. But when I turn off the firewall, the problem persists. Actually, I'm not very knowledgeable about networking issues, so I'm not sure I'm turning off the firewall correctly, but in the config web page for my router, I go to firewall settings, pick the computer by name, and choose an option that says "Allow all applications (DMZplus mode)". I've also rebooted the laptop since changing this option and tried again with the same results.

Ubuntu :: Fixing MBR After Windows Installation

Aug 17, 2011

without thinking, reinstalled my windows installation after already having the dual-boot set up and it wrote over the GRUB with Windows MBR. I let my girlfriend's friend borrow the disc before this and decided to just wait it out. Then, when getting the disc back, I carelessly forgot it at their house and have never been able to retrieve it, nor do I think that I ever will.

At this point my only live discs either only have GRUB1 or are corrupted. My only tools now are a netbook with a wubi installation of Xubuntu(no CD drive) and a 1GB flash drive, it seems. Any suggestions on how to access my ubuntu installation?

I would like to use Gparted to restore/fix my partitions and don't exactly know what I need/don't need and also how to resize my os x HSF+ partition back to full size? An image below shows my current setup (kinda messed up I think.) What steps should I take in Gparted to delete the unnecessary partitions and give OS X it's full size?

I have the joyous task of having to find and fix a bug in a large opensource project for an assignment. Fixing the bug should only take about 4 hours according to the lecturer. I would prefer the source language of the project to be Java, since my C++ is quite rusty.

So, does anyone have some experience in this type of thing, and can you give me advice about which projects would not be nasty to an ignorant student? Also, which tools did you use to make it easier for you? I want to learn how to do this, but I'm just a bit clueless at present.

Debian :: Errors After Upgrade To Squeeze

Dec 28, 2010

I just upgraded to Debian Squeeze (from Lenny) and there are several errors occuring.

The first one is that whenever I want to use mplayer it gives me the following output:

Maybe that has to do with faulty drivers, I'm not sure yet.

What's bugging me a little bit more is whenever I start a shell like konsole or xterm it displays the following:

It roughly translates to:

A third problem is when I try to use something like mplayer or java and then try the tab completion I get yet another error.

Which would be:

So I get "bash: _get_comp_words_by_ref: command not found", however it's not like that with all of my applications. Tab completion after the command "vlc" for example works just fine.

Debian :: Fresh Installation With Many Errors

Jan 15, 2011

I've been using Linux ( Ubuntu from like 4 months ) the first time of my life and I just love Linux, but I just feel that I need to switch to Debian like its the best and the powerful distro. I've installed Debian pretty well, then when rebooting it. I cant find my Ubuntu distro on the grub loader, then when I enter to my Debian distro. I just have that black screen with the note (out of range), so I've went to Google but as u know I am still a rookie, so I could avoid this problem by using.

alt + ctrl + ( - ), so I went to connecting the internet maybe I could download that nvidia drivers so it may fix the problem, but the most shock is that the internet isn't working with me. I am pretty sure that I've entered the IPs correctly but I really don't know whats the main problem is, with Ubuntu its much easier and it really worked quickly but as I said I just feel something for Debian , something that attract me to it.

I've already installed python and the python feedparser (required for this script). Or, at least I believe I have the feedparser installed--I'm not sure how to verify it was installed successfully without running this script.

Fedora :: Fixing An Undersized Extended Partition?

I have a situation where a disk was built using an image from a disk with a much smaller geometry. The result is about 70% of the disk is unused. Most of the partitions (including root) are on an extended partition that is sized for this smaller geometry. The person who did this has already been scolded, but life goes on.fdisk shows this:

Disk /dev/sda: 146.6 GB, 146694733824 bytes

OpenSUSE Install :: Fixing Server For 4KB Sectors?

Apr 17, 2010

I did set up a new server (with mail, apache and lots of other stuff) and was not aware that the new harddisks of type WD10EARS-00Y5B1 were using 4KB sectors internally. The problem became visible after going live because of the lousy performance of the harddisk drives.

Present situation: openSUSE 11.2 i586, 4 GB RAM, 2x 1TB HDD

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000efdd0

[code]....

I already did re-partition /dev/sdb with parted-2.2 (compiled from source) and set the alignment starting with sector 64 (instead of the default 63) making sure that the sector count of every partition divides by 8. Now comes the tricky part: I must partition /dev/sda as well. I can backup everything to /dev/sdb. What is the recommended course of action here? Make sdb active and boot it? That would give me all the time I need to deal with sda. Then reverse again. Any backup of /dev/sda will be outdated soon (running system)Rescue DVD only offers parted-1.9.0
