Debian :: Communicating From One Terminal To Another?
Aug 6, 2011
I created a custom trap in my bashrc that will run a command in all open terminals. The problem is, after the command is executed, the cursor isn't preceded by the bash prompt (i.e., PS1); it's just on a blank line. If I hit Enter, I get the bash prompt back.
I've tried some basic things like echo -e " " > /dev/pts/1 with no luck. I also tried to see if there's a signal associated with the Enter key because then I could have sent the signal to all the terminals, but I didn't find a signal like that.
Is there a way to send a keystroke to another terminal, so that it thinks that I hit the Enter key directly in it?
Or, if this is easier, is there a way to get the terminal to print out PS1? Echo will just display its contents, but won't evaluate, and eval can't evaluate it.
Ideally, I don't have to install a package to get the behaviour I want. Is there anything built-in

Everytime I get HPLip working with my printer, it will only work until I shutdown the computer. On next restart, it no longer works and the only way to get it to work again is to delete the printer configs in hplip and re-create them!

I have been given a present of an Apple Ipad. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the Ipad to communicate with a PC running SUSE 11.3 instead of a Windows PC and if so how do you go about it?

I am stuck at a issue in shell scripting. I had tried all the possible ways, yet unable to reach a solutions. I am working on a application, which runs on C shell. For this I had created a installation script, which installs my application in the system, it is working fine. Now, the problematic part is that I had set an alias in ".cshrc" file, which invokes my application when any user types it. But for an alias to take effect, I need to re-login into the system, because I have to read ".cshrc" file again, in order to take effect of my alias. However I can use "source ~/.cshrc" file after my installation, so that my aliasing works without logging back again. But Requirement is that, just after installing the application, alias should be available to user, without logging back again and without issuing any extra command.
I had tried one other way is that, I had created a symbolic link in ~/bin directory, which points to my application to be run, but even that require, to issue rehash command in order to modify internal command hash table. So, my overall problem is that changing alias in subshell should be reflected to parent shell, without running any other command (all commands should be run in installation script only). Or, in other way how to rehash parent shell from subshell. The ultimate requirement is that, the command that will run my application, should be available just after executing the installation script, either by aliasing or by rehashing, or by any other means.

I am having trouble with computers communicating on the wireless lan. However, if I ssh into the wireless access point and then ssh into another computer on the wlan, that works fine. The draw backs to that is I am restricted to only ssh and without X forwarding. So what I would like to do is set up ssh port forwarding so that computer2 with vnc server 5900 on the lan will be accessible through 40000 on mycomputer using the wireless router's ssh as the go-between with ssh port forwarding. How can I accomplish that? Every time I read about this, I think I understand it, and but then I must have done something wrong because it's not working the way I thought. I have successfully done ssh port forwarding in the past without using a third computer as a go between. Both the wlan access point/router and computer2 are running an ssh server.

I'm running Fedora 15, and am trying to run a program that uses gsoap/soapcpp2 2.7.17 to communicate with different parts of the program. As far as I know everything has compiled correctly and I am using the same versions of the required libraries as several working installations. However, every single time the program tries to open a port, the program is unable to do so. This happens no matter what port I specify.
if there is anything in fedora that would limit or disable the ability of the program to open a port to start communicating. I have tried disabling the firewall with no change to the behaviour.

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

I had set up mencoder to run in xterm as part of screen (it takes 'bout six hours do do the encoding) over ssh. I detached from screen and then ended my remote login. At roughly 5 & a half hours on, I remotely logged in and started screen. What I got was a blank xterm terminal, checking with htop it indicates that mencoder is still chugging along. Running "jobs" from the xterm terminal yields nothing associated with said termonal. How can I get the output from mencoder back to the xterm terminal?

I'm messing around with a new install of Debian 8, trying to get a sandbox of Oracle DB 12c up and running in an ESXi environment.
open-vm-tools was giving me troubles (resizing the window didn't make the resolution change), and Oracle DB was fighting me with environmental variables.
Well, while I was troubleshooting the Oracle issue, I needed to reboot. When it came back up, I couldn't log in. When I attempt to log in using known working credentials, the screen goes black like it should, and then loads the login screen again.
I SSH into the box and try to run commands, but every single command I run returns "Command not found" including "ls" "su" "cd".
I'm able to boot into recovery mode, where the commands work under root, but I'm not sure what to fix....

At first, all seemed normal on the gnome-terminal except for the scroll bar but my theme settings don't seem to have changed. I guess that's because, they haven't as I can see in programs like iceweasel where all is normal.I am using testing/wheezy. I tried removing /home/deniz/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal and restarting my computer but that did not work. Did an update screw things up or what? How do I bring things back to normal?

System: Debian 7 Wheezy amd64 - Gnome classic - gdm3
I'm trying to create a new gdm session in tty8, so I can switch between tty7 and tty8 running simultaneously.
How can I accomplish this? I found some website suggesting to run startx and also startx gnome-session -- :1 vt8 Both result in a black screen, blocking the overall system, not allowing me to go to tty1 nor any tty. I have to run REINSUB to restart the system.
# I don't know if tty is the exact term to refer to the CTRL+ALT+Fx virtual terminals.

I just set up my Debian 8.3.0 Jessie install a couple of days ago. Today I am having a problem carrying out a command in terminal. All I want to do at the moment is make sure my firewall is active. I log in and out of my computer using the password that I set when I originally installed Debian, and I use the same password in the package updater, but today it would not accept that password in terminal. Here is what I am seeing;
rocky@debian:~$ sudo ufw-enable
[sudo] password for rocky:
rocky is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
rocky@debian:~$ sudo ufw-enable
[sudo] password for rocky:
Sorry, try again.

How do I use terminal? What password am I to use?

After reboot I can start it, no problem here. But if I close root terminal and trying to open it again - it won't open.
If to open it from user terminal, it gives me:
Code: Select allgksu /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator
Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.gnome.Terminal exited with status 1
The only thing comes to my mind is that right after installation I opened root terminal and:
- kept a tick on "remember password"
- put a tick on "save in the keyring".
I guess the last tick is the problem. I installed debian 8.4 in virtualbox and specifically kept the tick where it should be and I can start root terminal many times w/o any problem. How I can fix that?
I do realize that I can get root privileges in terminal. I guess it's more about convenience.
I tried to google it, but no luck. Just to name few:

direct me to a good beginner's guide to Debian? Or explain some things briefly. Where can I learn how to use the Terminal Command Line? How do you add programs to Debian and what all is supported? What are packages in Debian and what can they do? Installing programs is different as expected. I tried installing Firefox, I downloaded it and extracted it into my home directory. I can run it with the Terminal Command: ~/firefox/firefox [When in the home directory] and it works. Is that how it is intended to work? Just random thing there. I guess in a sense, I just really want to learn about every aspect of Debian Linux in a user-friendly type environment.

I have this NVIDIA.run file and rather than executing it in the terminal from changing properties, I want to just install it from the terminal, since Debian always insists for a super user privilege, and I can't login as root in the X-Server. This is a catch 22 imo, though nevermind that. It seems that in attempt to replace the .exe files of Windows OS, other safety features impede such. This leaves beginners with such a disposition, how do I get this dam .run file to run... hihi. This is not the first time I've 'run' into such a similar issue, and the pro geni of this system seem to think that these issues are slight.

When I start Gnome it automatically signs me on to my wireless network--but I would like to connect to my wireless without using gnome. I may be misinformed but I believe that I am not using gnome it I do not sign-on when the window pops up asking for my password and I switch to tty2.
Here is what I know.
I have a SSID name my interface is 802.11 (wlan0) my security is wpa/wpa2 and i have to enter a password.
and my IPv4 setting is automatic my wireless driver is ath5k.
I tried to read the iwconfig man page--but I don't understand it enough. Could someone provide me an example of how I would connect to my wireless.
I am using the testing operating system.
