Ubuntu Multimedia :: Graphics Seem Very Sluggish Doing Things Like Opening And Closing Windows, Popping Up Menus?

May 25, 2010

I've just installed kubuntu 10.04 x64 and I'm slowly working through lots of little niggly problems that I'm having getting it all set up.My graphics seem VERY sluggish doing things like opening and closing windows, popping up menus etc.I have an Athlon II 250 3.0ghz processor, 2GB RAM and onboard graphics ATI HD2100 (740G chipset).I tried to get the proprietary graphics driver installed to see if that made any difference but it wouldn't recognise the onboard graphics, a bit of googling seems to suggest they have actually dropped support for this model? After removing the proprietary stuff it seems even more sluggish than it did before.

Debian Multimedia :: Scroll Through The Menus The Highlighter Is Grey And It Makes Things Awfully Hard To Read?

Jul 1, 2010

I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on Debian Squeeze. Everything went smoothly, but Firefox looks weird. The interface reminds me of Windows 98 and anytime I scroll through the menus the highlighter is grey and it makes things awfully hard to read. I'm not sure what could be wrong but I'm hoping someone here I'm not sure how to insert small images as url links so I'll just post links to screenshots I took for reference.[URL]Oh, and one other problem I recently discovered, flash doesn't seem to work. It works just fine in Iceweasel but I am told I have to install it in Firefox. I installed libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins but that doesn't seem to have helped. Come to think of it, it probably wouldn't since it's probably the 32-bit version I got from their site, I run on 64 bit.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Has Gone Berserk - Keeps Closing And Re-opening?

Feb 20, 2010

I have an older Gateway P4 computer running Ubuntu 9.10. I had removed the nm-applet from the systray because I wanted the system to have a static IP. That was several months ago. Today, unthinkingly, I tried to re-add the icon by going into System -> Preferences -> Start-up Applications. I put check in the box next to "Network Manager", then re-started my system. However, when my system came back up, instead of the Network Manager icon, I had two System Audio icons in the tray. One was actually for the audio; the other one just said "Notification Icon" when I put my mouse over it. Again, without thinking, I clicked on "remove from panel". That's where my problems have begun. As soon as I did that, the top and bottom bars disappeared, then reappeared. Except now they're doing that constantly. My machine has become totally unusable. I did manage to turn it off and re-start it, but it comes right back to doing this again.

I can remotely log in from another system (which is where I'm typing this message from) and see that, according to "top", the "gnome-panel" is running at anywhere from 30 - 50% of my CPU. I can provide any logs or other information necessary since I can access the system remotely.

Ubuntu :: Closing Laptop Cover Causes Freeze On Opening?

I recently upgraded my laptop from Lucid to Meerkat 10.10. Everything was fine until I closed my laptop cover. In "suspend" , I can't come back. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor, and I have to reboot. Not a good situation with a laptop. Is there anything I can do? I prefer Meerkat to Lucid for my laptop except for this one area.

Ubuntu :: 11.04: Screen Glitches After Closing And Opening Laptop?

since I've upgraded to 11.04 on my Dell Latitude E6400, every time I close the lid and open it again, Ubuntu fires up but the screen itself is totally messed up, it's just random patterns all over the screen. The laptop is locked, so I can type in my password, hit enter, and once I'm logged in again the screen is perfectly fine, so the system itself works, only the display is the problem

General :: Speeding Up Script By Opening And Closing DB Connection Just Once?

Jan 21, 2011

I have a script which takes a file as input and reads it in while loop cuts the name of table and stores in a variable opens DB connection and queries for rowcount in that table closes the connection reads another file and then follows step 1 through 4 till EOF is reached. Now this script is taking longer to execute maybe because the DB connection is opened and closed each time.

My scripts is:

Code:

#!/bin/ksh
cat logcountOP | while read LINE
TBLName=`echo $LINE|cut -d "-" -f1`

[code].....

I was thinking of changing this.I want to open the DB connection just once and then query it for all tables and then exit.

Debian Multimedia :: Opening Windows Shares In XFCE (Thunar)

May 24, 2015

Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.

Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Popping And Distorted Sound On 10.04?

Jul 6, 2010

I did a clean install to 10.04. Not too many issues except any sound I play sounds like it's underwater and pops while playing. I have tried to do the Pulse Audio install, but every time I loaded pauvcontrol (I think was the title), it would pop up "Connection Failure: Connection Refused." I tried to follow other guides, but they'd all fail because I'd be missing half of the files it changed. I have a Creative Labs X-Fi Fatality card that has given me troubles in the past, but usually, it works. I tried to install Creative's open driver, but again, I had an error when I attempted to Make the directory.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem - Video Stays On Top Of Drop Down Menus And Video Remains When Change Windows?

May 30, 2011

this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Banshee Won't Close - Keeps Popping Back?

Aug 11, 2010

I seem to be having a problem with Banshee. When I boot up, it automatically starts up, which seems innocent enough. However, I opened up Exaile (because Banshee had this problem of not recognizing spaces in some of my songs' filenames, replacing them with '%20'), and closed Banshee from its notifications icon. It closed, but about 3-5 seconds later its window pops up again. I used Ctrl+Q to quit, but it still came back after a few seconds. I've tried opening up a terminal and typing "killall banshee-1", but still, Banshee keeps coming back. Even though I restart and not open Exaile, Banshee still keeps coming back when I try to kill it.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Windows Movement And Starter Menu Sluggish / Choppy

Aug 18, 2011

I have an Intel Core i7 860, 8 GB RAM, with nVidia Quadro NVS 295 graphics card running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.7. Moving, resizing, and minimizing windows, opening the starter menu is sluggish, choppy. It's not that I cannot live with it, but it should be smooth, and that's what bothering me. It seems like I have tried "everything" to fix the problem, disabling the blur effect, the pixmap trick, changing nVidia driver (both the latest beta 285.03, the latest stable 280.13, and the one from the repository, 275.21), and enabling and disabling the things on the "Advanced" tab for desktop effects.

Changing from the Oxygen theme to something else improved it a bit, but it is still very choppy. It seems related to the number of windows I have open. If I have one window open, everything flows nicely, but already with two windows it becomes slow. I have a dual screen (TwinView) setup, but removing the second screen did not improve anything. I'm not very good at the graphics part. I can't stand all the comments about "sluggish Linux graphics" I get from MS Windows users.

These are the top lines I get from glxinfo:
Code:
name of display: :0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

Ubuntu :: Browsing The Filesystem (Nautilus) And Firefox Seems Realy Sluggish Compared To The Windows 7 Counterparts

Mar 22, 2011

I can't quantify the behavior, but every time I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32-bit), I get the impression that I'm using a much slower machine. All I have to compare it to is my Windows 7 64-bit install on the same machine (specs in signature), where almost everything is very snappy by comparison.

I don't have skipping audio or delayed video when watching DVDs in VLC Media Player, and Urban Terror (a 3D game) runs fine, but just general stuff like browsing the filesystem (Nautilus) and Firefox seems reaaaaallly sluggish compared to the Windows 7 counterparts.

What I'm doing at the time does not appear to affect the sluggishness. I have noticed the same impression of sloth both while copying large files, and while doing nothing in particular. That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Does an Ubuntu install normally slow down over time? I have only been running 10.04 LTS since last October or so.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Playing 1080 MKV File - Video Sluggish

Apr 21, 2011

I have lots of 720p MKV files which play fine on VLC and/or mplayer. These are the two players I know. Whenever I try to play a 1080p file, the video is sluggish and quickly desynchronizes from the audio (mplayer) or the sound is choppy (vlc). This is because one CPU cannot decode a 1080p x264 video. Not powerful enough. Now, I have a Q6600, with 4 cores. Options in mplayer and VLC to use more than one decoding thread don't seem to do anything at this date, as one core is only user (reported by TOP).

Ubuntu :: Accidentily Overwrote Windows And Other Things?

I just did something that is moderately serious in my book.while trying to put a iso/img to a USB drive using "dd" command (actual command: "dd if/=/home/<username>/Desktop/<image file name> of/=/dev/sda1"), I accidentally wrote to /dev/sda1 (which is my windowspartition on this dual booted computer). When i try to boot into windows, it gives a error that it cannot find the parition. the iso was about 400meg, it was a install iso for another form of linux (arch linux). Is there anyway that I can get my windows partition to work again, or am i just going to have to say goodbye to all my music, pictures, etc. And I think some of my teachers require me to use windows based software... So I would like to eventually get back into windows though.I am running Ubuntu 9.10, I am on a laptop (HP HDX 16t)I am going to get ubuntu back onto my netbook (i destroyed that earlier tonight by deleting a partition that had the bootloader on it... i am just wiping that though)

General :: Gparted Says Have Bad Sectors In Windows Partition After Deleting Things?

Oct 30, 2010

I have a 230GB hard drive wich I don't know it's name.I have a 207GB windows vista partition and the rest of it is for linux (Ubuntu).Today I decided giving it all space to Ubuntu Linux ,but didn't want to lose all my data from the windows partition.I thought that by deleting all things except the folder with my data and leaving enough space to shrink and make enough room for another partition to put my data folder. The logic is that i could then format that partition wich previously was windows and use it all for ubuntu without losing data. After having ubuntu installed i could copy my data folder to /home and then delete the previous partition and make /home bigger. The problem is that after i freed the space, when using Gparted to shrink it says that the partition has bad sectors or the filesystem has problems and so it can't do some operations.

What could have went wrong? It told me to do chkdisk but as i deleted all the windows files and i can't boot into it anymore.I used the vista dvd to do that.I rebooted 2 times as it says and after that when trying again nothing changed.I tried to use ntfsresize with the --bad-sectors argument and also the -f argument but it's useless. At the end it says it won't do anything until the ntfs filesystem get repaired.Or it says it is too risky to continueIs there any way i could do some superforce command to resize it without losing data? Please don't tell me to put it on an external storage cause i have like 70GB of datas to save...no i don't have an external hardrive

Nov 27, 2010

ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.

here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..
