Debian :: Automated Boot On 0h00 Sunday?
Jun 26, 2011
I'm still kinda noob in linux and I've installed Debian Squeeze (LXDE version) and it boots itself (the whole computer) at midnight from saterday to sunday. This is somewhat troubling me as I'm trying to sleep at that time. I've googled about this but I couldnt find very helpful information.

While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands. In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

All I want to do is set the machine to run a certain command (or a few) at 8 o'clock on a Sunday evening. The manual is no help, google (google keeps telling me how to do it with different cron demins rather than at) is no help, I'm at my wits' end.
Surely somebody somewhere on earth has needed to do this before??

I've read through your forums and done a bit of googling to see that an automated reboot at a certain time has something to do with cron jobsMy second task is then to run commands like the following command when the machine starts up again...screen -t s5 ./srcds_run -console -game cstrike -port 27025 +ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xx +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 11 -tickrate 100 -autoupdateit seems to me I need to edit the rd.local but when I open my file I don't really understand where I need to insert my command

My organization is running a VMware vSphere based platform. On top of that we have a Sun Gridengine cluster consists of a number of ubuntu VMs.At the moment, we deploy new cluster nodes from the VM template. Although it already saves us lots of time, we still need to configure the network, host name, register DNS record manually. In a near future, we will need to add 100+ more hosts to the cluster. So we are seeking a automated deployment so that a VM does the following during its first boot:
1)configure the network for the correct IP with DHCP or manual.
2)request a designate host name (maybe from a pre-defined datasource?) and configure host name.
3)register itself to our DNS servers.
We don't really have experiences for running big cluster. So welcome to share your opinions and experiences.Specially I'd very keen to find out if there is any well-proven solution right there or I will need to implement from the scratch.

Suse 11.3/Gnome 2.30.0
Evolution 2.30.1.2
I cannot get the monthly view to start the week on Sunday. The settings seem right but they don't stick. Restarting Evolution always defaults to a week start on Monday even though the defaults display Sunday. I've viewed the default settings the following two ways:
Within Evolution... Edit > Preferences > Calendar and Tasks > week starts on "Sunday"
GNOME Configuration editor.../apps/evolution/calendar/display/week_start_day = 0 (Sunday)

I'm using Centos 5.3 with xen to virtualize some virtual machines (mostly windows 2003).
It works perfectly fine excepted one thing :
Each monday morning, the server is crashed with nothing noticeable in the logs that help.
Since it allways happen between sunday 22h00 and monday 05h00, I suspect a crash when running some cron tasks...
The server works fine. I look at cron.weekly and deactivated makewhatis.com which is the only task apart 0anacron...
But it makes no difference.
I really don't see what can cause such a regular failure... As I am more specialist on Debian, there may be some specific tasks running every week on centos I didn't noticed.

It there a way to enable automated mouse cursors in Fedora 12? About the only thing I miss from WinDoze is the animated hourglass cursor when I start an application by double-clicking its icon. With Fedora, I'll sometimes double-click an icon again, thinking that my first attempt didn't work, only to find that the program was loading and then I have two instances of the program.Yeah, it's a minor thing and, yeah, I can live without it, but it sure would be nice.

What would be the best way to have automated system backups? I'm trying to get it so my Xubuntu box automatically backs up the entire system including user settings on regular intervals, what would be the best way to do it? I have 2 hard drives with one that I do not use that I'd like to backup to.

I am trying to create a script to do the following.. Login to a ftp and download a with the following naming convention xmtvMMDDYY.xml.gzon a daily basis followed by extracting that file. which I can do easy enough with a static filename. but the variable filename is throwing me off. I was planning on doing a mget with wildcard to just grab the entire directory but this found to not be as clean as I had hoped. Mainly due to the admins of the ftp keeping multiple days of the above mentioned file on the site.

I recently updated my girlfriends laptop (and my own) to KDE 4.4 (using the Factory repository). I am also using some additional repositories like PackMan.
I recently read on this forum, that the updater-applet is only updating from the main repositories (the ones set up after install). I would like to update from all updates periodically using "zypper dup".
I read somewhere else, that cronjobs are used to run scripts based on schedules. how I could run "zypper dup" with a cronjob and preferably under root, so I dont have to type the password every time?

I am trying to set up an automated installation system for hardware testing and was wondering if anyone on here can point me in the right direction.I would like it to be compatable with a wide range of OS distros including Ubuntu, Red Hat, CentOS, Suse, Windows, Dos, FreeBSD, etc. If some custom scrypting is required thats fine, but flexibility is key.I am looking into Jumstart and Kickstart right now, but I am not sure if that is what I need.

I am trying to put together a customized automatic installation of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop for a set of computers I manage at work. Since there are other servers in my department that are Red Hat based, I was introduced to Kickstart so I have been using that exclusively.
I have almost my entire installation automated using Kickstart with the exception of the partitioning, which is as follows:
My problem that I am asking for help on is that the Kickstart automates everything until the clearpart, where it then asks 2 questions which I would like to figure out how to automate the answers to (preferably within my Kickstart script)
The first question is the install process telling me about my currently configured partitions and mount points. Asking me if i want to "Undo changes to partitions" or "Finish Partitioning and write changes to disk" which I of course want to finish partitioning.
The second question is telling me if I continue the changes listed will be written to the disks, and asks if I want to "Write changes to disks?" which I want to select Yes for automatically.
Like I mentioned before I have searched the web and this forum for any potential way of doing this, but so far have come up with nothing, so I figured I would ask the experts out here and see what suggestions come up. I realize the Kickstart is not completely implemented in Ubuntu, however since I have everything written in Kickstart already I would prefer to stay within the Kickstart script to fix this.

any way to set up an at or cronjob that will give some sort of notification that's readily apparent while using GNOME? I've tried a number of things including setting up a job that would run "gksu gedit" just to lock up the screen and remind me.

I was wondering if there are any tools that automate the process of installing from source for example tar.gz or tar.bz2. I have used kludge installer but I am looking for something that doesn't make me install any dependencies for example I want a bash shell script it just runs the commands you normally do but faster.

list the used variables.
1. display menu until user quits the script
2. menu would give following options to
a. create backup
b. restore files from backup
c. quit
3. for option a or b user would be required to specify the files and name of the archive]
4. has option to be run with use of parameters if that is the case it will not display menu but carry out required task unless it was not possible to do
5. incase of any errors are encountered it would call external scrpit that would display custom disigned error message.

I want to install Red hat based custom OS in a complete automated mode.I ll have my kick start file inside the CD rom and when I boot with that ISO or CD.The OS should start installing by taking parameters from the kick start file without having to specify the path of the kick start file inside the CD.like "linux ks=<path>".Is it possible to achieve this by writing any script or something so that when the CD boots the kick start path is passed automatically to the anaconda installer.

So I have a script that is supposed to check to see if a mail server is up and responsive. What I want to know is how I can send it the telnet escape character. I've tried:VAR=`(sleep 5;echo quit) | (telnet mailserver.timbuktu.net 25 2>&- )`
This works BUT there is a problem as the mail server may have been accidentally firewalled off. If this happens, my automated checking script will hang. What I want to do is send the escape character so that the '>' prompt comes up. They I should be able to send it "quit" even if it is hung on not getting a response from the server. VAR=`(sleep 5;echo -e '^]';sleep 1;echo quit) | (telnet arhqmg01.usarec.army.mil 25 2>&- )`
The above doesn't work. telnet interprets CTRL+] as '^]' but you can't type '^]' and get the same effect. So I guess what I need is to send the actual keystrokes. Like echo "somenumber" ; echo quit

In recent days, (today is September 18, 2010) I've been surfing the web trying to learn how to access nodes in my soho lan by netbios names instead of having to connect through the ip number, because ip's change every time according to DHCP assignments. I do not know what has happened to the "new" command mount.cifs, but things seem to have become a bit more complicated with the new version. Security problems, they say, and surely that's the reason.
I show here an automated way of loging into servers by netbios name instead of having to resort to the use of IP numbers, hosts files, wins servers and all that jazz. This is especially useful if your soho lan have five or more network nodes, and you do not want to go finding out the ip numbers assigned to the machines you want to connect to (temporarily or permanently).
This output is piped to gawk to isolate the line containing <00>, and gawk outputs the first element (print $1) of that line, which happens to be the ip of the server ServerName. I tested the script in my soho network, which now has Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 nodes, and it worked perfectly for both tipes of servers.I'm using GNU's gawk, but I'm pretty sure that awk would do the job just as well.

Run a script on ServerA which uses a ssh-connection to ServerB to execute a few commands on ServerB. As ServerB only allows login with username+password the whole stuff gets more complex. SSH provides key authentication enabling passwordless login as you probably know. So as stated in many tutorials I did the following:
Quote:
ssh-keygen -t dsa
ssh-copy-id .ssh/id_dsa.pub osr@10.17.120.207
Trying to connect with
ssh osr@10.17.120.207
should now be passwordless but I'm somehow still getting the prompt for the password.here the output from ssh -vvv osr@10.17.120.207
Quote:
OpenSSH_4.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d 17 Mar 2004
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
[code]....
interesting are probably the following lines:
Quote:
debug3: Not a RSA1 key file /users/osr/.ssh/id_dsa.
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN'

NextPendingConnection () returns a new socket with respect to a new client. This new QSocket is passed to the connect () function which connects it to a SLOT 'xyz' with SIGNAL 'readyRead()'. Now in the SLOT 'xyz' how I am supposed to automate the monitoring of ALL connected sockets to see whether some data is available on them? One pathetic way would be to run all the sockets through a for loop and check each one of them for the data. Secondly, I read up on QSocketNotifier() here: [URL]. But I am not sure if that is the correct thing.

I installed webmin on many servers under my control and decided to automate the job. Here is a shell script to automatically add WebMin repo to yum and install it. You can use "nano -w webmin_install.sh" to create a script somewhere, copy there the source, save, then allow execution using "chmod u+x webmin_install.sh" and then use "./webmin_install.sh" to execute it.
