View 3 RepliesWhere does quassel irc monolithic client store its logs ?
View 3 RepliesRecently I have been trying out quassel, while its a good IRC client security-wise it does fail in one crucial aspect which is the GUI which needs a lot of polish. A
Anyways, this is my setup. I am usually on two networks irc.freenode.org and irc.oftc.net and have number of channels which I want to autojoin and also later be able to add channels to the list.
Let's say the chat list name is DebianIRC (which is the default chat list). Does anybody know how can I do both/either of the things. So things to be done are :-
a. As far as I understand quassel ONLY lets one chat list be from the first network. I haven't been able to figure out how to add the second networks channels to the list while doing the initial setup.
b. How to later add channels from either or even a new networks (quassel calls IRC domain servers such as irc.freenode.org/irc.oftc.net as networks) to an existing list . For an example if the list is named as DebianIRC.
c. Also does somebody know where the logs are kept and any tricks/tips people do with the logs. By default I want logging on and on some channels more intensive logging than others.
I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.
One can take a screenshot - i.e. to store it in the memory by pressing PrtScr. But I failed to find how to write it into a graphic file? In particular in Xfce which does not have a graphic file editor

Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm developing a server application for ubuntu server, clients will connect to in through socket connection. It's in beta stage and under heavy development. At the moment lots of people are using it and it is updated almost every day. So I seed to seriously consider security issues and in the same time don't restrict myself too much. Now I have two questions:
Where is the appropriate place to store its files? Application consists of executable, some config files and startup script. But I don't want to spread it accross the filesystem just store in single folder for convenience since app is under heavy development. My guess would be to create new dir under /var. Right now I store it in my home folder.
Do I need to create separate user for it? I start it up using init.d script via sudo -u me. I want to restrict its access to system for security purposes but in the same time I want to be able to update it through FTP and not run into access issues (user that uploads it is different from user that runs it, and it sometimes need write access to some files). How to do that?
I use one PC only, I paste some files and folders into the U1 folder. Files upload to the webstore, I can see them via the web. Now, *what* is subsequently used as a *reference* for content? For example, what should happen if I rename a folder in the PC U1 folder? Should the new name later appear appropriately on the webstore? What should happen if I use the web access, and delete a folder in the webstore? The PC U1 folder remains full, does the web store get filled and corrected? At a time when the webstore is complete and correct, if the contents of the PC U1 folder is deleted by me, will the webstore contents act as a form of backup? Or will the webstore contents also get removed by U1 process?

Is fat32 an option? I have very large files(game isos and stuff like that)
If fat32 isn't an option, what filesystem should I use?
I read this thread but it doesnt mention the software to use and I assume we wants only to be able to see it in Linux.
If you want to try the music store out without risking of any of your hard earned, 7digital have a selection of free downloads here. Check them out on web site, then go find in Rythmbox and check out as normal.This is using from UK, I assume they also do the same in other territories.

View 13 Replies View RelatedRunning Slack 12.2. I'm getting all sorts of nasty noises out of my speakers. When I fire up alsamixer I see that 'mic' and 'mic boost' are both unmuted. I mute them and all is well, then 'alsactl store' to save it. But on restart the 'mic' is back to unmuted. What do I need to do to get the change to stick? BTW, I've tried the changes to alsamixer and alsactl as root, as user, from Konsole, from command line before startx, after shutting down X -- every combination and nothing works.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am running Debian on a 4 years old pentium machine. I have recently switched from Windows to Linux, so I'm still preferring the graphical user interface (Gnome is very good for me).
Now my problem: My harddisk becomes too small for the data I am storing and processing (pics, music, videos), and I would like to fit a larger one. So afterwards, I will need to reinstall debian and all the software I now have in it. How can I store a list of the currently installed software? (I can view it with the gnome apt software manager (also with synaptic), but I did not find a way how to store or print it).
Or, could I possibly save the whole system on an external harddisk and restore from that afterwards, as I do with the data?
I need to transfer some email off of an IMAP server. But there will not be an MTA available to make the transfer to at the time I need to do it. I'm looking for an option to configure fetchmail so that it merely stores each piece of email into a separate file in a designated directory.
If it wants to make a complex path of more than one directory layer, that's OK. Or all the mail can be in one directory.
If a different program other than fetchmail would be better for this kind of purpose, that, too, is OK ... provided that program has the option to keep all mail on the IMAP server it fetches from.
From what I understand, linux applies mount options to ntfs. Then if I want to change a file's permissions, I suppose it stores them somewhere on system disk or memory? If a lot files need to have permissions changed in different ways, can this use a lot of space? By the way, in general when I write to ntfs, can I expect any kind of problems when windows accesses the same disk?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a loop which produces new value everytime it runs. i want to store the results in an array. how can i do dat??
loop is like:
a=0
declare v
while ((....))
do
v[$a]="$r"
let a=a+1
done
while doing this it is not treating v as array but as variable and it is overriding the value and old value is lost..i am using bash shell version 3.00.15
Code:
ls Again the command can be stored in a variable and then executed. Like
Code:
var=ls
&var
The above two codes are the same. The problem occurs when we try to pipeline it. Consider the following problem:
Code:
ls | grep *
works fine...but when we try to store it in a variable and run the command there is an error.
Code:
var="ls|grep *"
$var
how to store this kind of commands in a variable?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter the Sun Jan 24 20:22:46 UTC 2010 update in slackware-current (x86), I am unable to store SSL certificates until "Forever" when asked if greeted with an unknown certificate under KDE. No application can save the certificates eg.: konqueror, kmail etc... I am aware that the above mentioned update didn't bring any updated KDE applications/libs, but still, this has stopped working right after this upgrade. The certificates can be accepted, and after doing so everything works as expected. The only annoying thing, is that although I have selected to trust the certificate "Forever", it asks again after an application restart (eg. konqueror, kmail) if I want to trust this cert forever or for the current sessions only. So it seems, that I can not store/save/trust the SSL certificates forever with KDE.
