Software :: Alsactl Store Won't Stick?
Feb 23, 2011
Running Slack 12.2. I'm getting all sorts of nasty noises out of my speakers. When I fire up alsamixer I see that 'mic' and 'mic boost' are both unmuted. I mute them and all is well, then 'alsactl store' to save it. But on restart the 'mic' is back to unmuted. What do I need to do to get the change to stick? BTW, I've tried the changes to alsamixer and alsactl as root, as user, from Konsole, from command line before startx, after shutting down X -- every combination and nothing works.

I am using Debian Testing i386 on ThinkPad T400s. From recently, I am getting an error message during booting: alsactl cannot be found. Exactly:
'alsactl-restore' failed with error message: 'Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Conexant CX20585", ...'
Hardware installed using a guess method...
Can anyone tell me what is going on here and how can I fix this?

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

Every time I boot my machine, some of the playback values in alsamixer are set to 0 and are muted, so I have no sound.
The thing is, I have tried setting these to normal levels and then run sudo alsactl store. Then, if I run sudo alsactl restore after I reboot, the sound comes back up. However, if I have alsactl restore in /etc/rc.local, it doesn't work: I still get muted sound when I reboot. I have to run sudo alsactl restore manually each time.
I have already checked whether /etc/rc.local runs at startup, and it does. Also, I know that /var/lib/alsa/asound.state contains the correct values, because when I run sudo alsactl restore, the sound returns to normal levels. So what remains is either alsactl restore doesn't work in /etc/rc/local, or something runs after it and mutes the sound.

I'm about to ditch Freenas as my NAS software and make it an Ubuntu server box. The mainboard is an Asus AT3ION-T dual core Atom board. Freenas runs happily from USB stick. I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.

I'm developing a server application for ubuntu server, clients will connect to in through socket connection. It's in beta stage and under heavy development. At the moment lots of people are using it and it is updated almost every day. So I seed to seriously consider security issues and in the same time don't restrict myself too much. Now I have two questions:
Where is the appropriate place to store its files? Application consists of executable, some config files and startup script. But I don't want to spread it accross the filesystem just store in single folder for convenience since app is under heavy development. My guess would be to create new dir under /var. Right now I store it in my home folder.
Do I need to create separate user for it? I start it up using init.d script via sudo -u me. I want to restrict its access to system for security purposes but in the same time I want to be able to update it through FTP and not run into access issues (user that uploads it is different from user that runs it, and it sometimes need write access to some files). How to do that?

I use one PC only, I paste some files and folders into the U1 folder. Files upload to the webstore, I can see them via the web. Now, *what* is subsequently used as a *reference* for content? For example, what should happen if I rename a folder in the PC U1 folder? Should the new name later appear appropriately on the webstore? What should happen if I use the web access, and delete a folder in the webstore? The PC U1 folder remains full, does the web store get filled and corrected? At a time when the webstore is complete and correct, if the contents of the PC U1 folder is deleted by me, will the webstore contents act as a form of backup? Or will the webstore contents also get removed by U1 process?

What will it be? I will use Clonezilla as the backup software, but I want to be able to see the backups from both Linux and windows.
Is fat32 an option? I have very large files(game isos and stuff like that)
If fat32 isn't an option, what filesystem should I use?
I read this thread but it doesnt mention the software to use and I assume we wants only to be able to see it in Linux.

I am running Debian on a 4 years old pentium machine. I have recently switched from Windows to Linux, so I'm still preferring the graphical user interface (Gnome is very good for me).
Now my problem: My harddisk becomes too small for the data I am storing and processing (pics, music, videos), and I would like to fit a larger one. So afterwards, I will need to reinstall debian and all the software I now have in it. How can I store a list of the currently installed software? (I can view it with the gnome apt software manager (also with synaptic), but I did not find a way how to store or print it).
Or, could I possibly save the whole system on an external harddisk and restore from that afterwards, as I do with the data?

I need to transfer some email off of an IMAP server. But there will not be an MTA available to make the transfer to at the time I need to do it. I'm looking for an option to configure fetchmail so that it merely stores each piece of email into a separate file in a designated directory.
If it wants to make a complex path of more than one directory layer, that's OK. Or all the mail can be in one directory.
If a different program other than fetchmail would be better for this kind of purpose, that, too, is OK ... provided that program has the option to keep all mail on the IMAP server it fetches from.

From what I understand, linux applies mount options to ntfs. Then if I want to change a file's permissions, I suppose it stores them somewhere on system disk or memory? If a lot files need to have permissions changed in different ways, can this use a lot of space? By the way, in general when I write to ntfs, can I expect any kind of problems when windows accesses the same disk?

Code:
ls Again the command can be stored in a variable and then executed. Like
Code:
var=ls
&var
The above two codes are the same. The problem occurs when we try to pipeline it. Consider the following problem:
Code:
ls | grep *
works fine...but when we try to store it in a variable and run the command there is an error.
Code:
var="ls|grep *"
$var
how to store this kind of commands in a variable?
