Debian :: Slow Frame Rate With Fullscreen Video In Browser?
May 27, 2011
I'm using Squeeze Gnome.
When I watch videos within my browser, they play fine until I expand it to full screen, then the frame rate slows way down.
I've been reading related posts, If I install the gecko media player, will that solve this problem?

I just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10. I have a Radeon 6450 with 1GB of video RAM which should give me pretty good performance, but I'm only getting a measly 60 fps with the new ATI diver (11.4). I installed like this, making sure I'd removed the open source driver:sh ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/nattyThen installed the debs and ran an aticonfig --initial. The module builds and installs fine:tnugent@translocon:~$ fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6450OpenGL version string: 4.1.10666 Compatibility Profile ContextBut this is not good:
tnugent@translocon:~$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
274 frames in 5.0 seconds = 54.800 FPS
[code]....

I tried reinstalling a better driver for my laptop the other night so that I could get a better frame rate while playing C&C Renegade. I was only getting 10 FPS and my ping was insanely high. So I went about installing a new driver and when it rebooted it started up in low graphics mode, asking to switch the driver. I tried everything I could, but nothing seemed to work. Right now, I get the boot screen and login screen and it looks normal, but once I log in, it flashes my background like its loading without a problem, but then it goes to a white screen. I can see my mouse on the screen though, and I know everything is working behind the white screen, because I can click stuff and can see my CPU LED blink, and I can use my desktop cube when I hold CTRL+ALT+(arrow). So I'm officially confused. I'm assuming there has to be some way to restore my driver somehow... BTW, Same thing happens when I boot into Gnome, X script, and Gnome Failsafe. The only thing I can do is boot my Live CD.
Here are my specs:
Acer Travelmate 2450
40 GB Hard drive
CD-RW Drive
ATI Xpress 200M (up to 128 MB, which is what it's set at)
Atheros WLAN card

Ever since I switched from ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04 I am having problems with playing videos.
I keep getting low frame rates while playing avi and mkv video files. I have tried messing around with the vsync option in compiz and the Catalyst control center but all to no avail.
I have read there are more ATI users with this problem. Is there a way to fix this?

I've installed lenny recently and from the very beginning i've got problems with flash. While watching flash films on ..... and other sites everything is fine until I try to switch the film to fullscreen mode. When pressing the fullscreen icon, browser is killed at once. It happens in iceweasel and epiphany as well. I tried flashplayer-mozilla and flashplugin-nonfree from repos and the problem remains the same.

11.04 x86
4Gb RAM
Dual 2.8 AMD
ATI x1650 radeon (512mb)
I've been struggling with this for months now and I've tried some many things, I've forgotten half of them!
Basically, 11.04 picks up my card fine using the open xorg driver. I've got compize desktop effects (wobbly windows) but I can't play any HD video as it stutters and is completely unwatchable.
So to do any video editing, I have to boot into my Windows 7 install where the performance is considerably better.
Now then, I once managed to get a glxgears frame rate of 11,000 before I broke my install and had to re-install. Now I can't get above 300fps
rb@ub:~/Desktop$ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.258 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.023 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.019 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.022 FPS

Same computer and flash. Two results on different OS:
Write speed under debian: 0.4 MB/s
Write speed under Windows: 6.6 MB/s
From what i've been reading on the net I guess it's something to do with the mount - sync option.
I've notice that there are couple of workarounds but all of them are pretty tedious.
Is there any simple (GUI - one/two clicks) tool that allow to mount/unmount flash disk easily using the correct options?
I'm using Squeeze 6.0.2 (Kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64), gnome 2.30.2

I went back to Suse 11.2, it comes with the 'nv' driver for my NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (64 MB) and I'm getting some slow performance on browser display and sometimes video playing. Not always, I recently saw a 2 hr long movie on Blue Ray resolution, so the problem is not hardware, it's software. I saw several links here on how to install other drivers and a 1-click install link on this page but my question is, since this is an old card... which driver is the best for this card ?

why I have a really bad FPS and how to fix it.
MY Setup:
Two 1Ghz Pentium III (Coppermine)
1GB Ram
8.9GB Hotswap HDD
In a Dell Poweredge 2550 (I think it doesn't say on the case)
Ubuntu 10.10 (Installed Via remote boot - Has gnome GUI, LAMP, Apache etc.)
I would like to play some games on this server to take advantage of the CPU's (the fastest I have) The Graphics card can display up to 1152x864 so It should be able to handle some 3d gaming but it I try to play tux racer it is very slow and only changes the frame every second, must be very low FPS also glxgears gives me in-between 50 and 60 fps and most people seem to get 500+!
The problem is not compiz because it is no-longer installed and I think I am using the open-source ati drivers not fglx.

If I watch a video on YouTube, the browser crashes when I try to change to another webpage. Typically, the video will play through but a few have crashed midway. It always crashes on changing the webpage after a video starts (whether it finishes first or not). There is no error message. I have searched the forum for 'iceweasel crash' and didn't see anything quite matching my own problem. I did look at related posts and none of them solved my problem. I'm not sure if the videos are HTML5 or flash. Perhaps a mix of both.
There's no problem with browsing regular pages, even if they have video advertisements in a sidebar. This seems to only be happening on YouTube. I have turned off all browser extensions and plugins with no improvement.
I've searched the internet and seen where there was a security problem with Flashplayer a month ago and the symptoms (if hacked into) sound similar to what's happening to me but I am using the latest version of Iceweasel and this bug is supposed to be fixed.
My Debian install is only about a week old and was a clean install to a formatted partition. I've added a few minor apps since install but nothing that would effect this. I also installed nVidia's proprietary graphics drivers. I can watch dvd movies, MP4's, .flv files, etc with no problems.

Video player that runs on linux that allows for frame by frame advance. or that i can really really slow down . Because what i want if something that behaves like Quicktime. allowing for single frame advance.
My understanding is that VLC will never do that because it is more of a network stream ....animal.
also the player needs to play 422 uncompressed yuv yuy2 - avi or qt.

Ubuntu 64-bit
Chromium
Every once in a while, clicking the fullscreen icon on a Flash video will result in the video playback overlay appearing behind the actual browser requiring the browser to be minimised to see the video. Sometimes this will minamise both and I can't watch it at all. Reproducible with this video [URL]

I am looking for a video editor that will let me open an AVI video and then save individual frames as image files (preferably JPG), I looked through the "Ubuntu Software Center" the only one that I found in there that would do this is "Video Cut" but when I try to open the 600+ meg AVI video I have it closes a moment later.
Anyone know of a video editor that will open a file this big and not crash?

I've got an annoying problem with refresh rates in everything to do with videos. Basically, anything that requires a quicker refresh than using a word processor. This includes flash movies on a website to playing an offline video. In website flash, the video tends to, well flash on occasion. The other sort of thing is pan lines or whatever they're called in videos like a simple .avi movie.
I currently have the nVidia 270.29 drivers installed for my GTS450 card, but this was happening with older versions. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 943 which is detected. The resolution and refresh rates are sort of fixed on auto configuration. What I mean is, is that I can use the drop down menu to change the resolution to a manual option, and then it allows me to select a refresh rate, but only limited to 60 and 75Hz.
This setting will stay as is until I need reboot or restart Ubuntu. Even clicking on Save to X Configuration File is not a keeper. However, here's another problem. Doesn't matter which refresh rate is selected, I still get the above problems. The same resolution and refresh rate yields no problem under Win7 which I've dual-booted with.

I would like to know if it is normal to experience 10MB/s data transfer rates during copying between partitions on my local hard drives (Toshiba 250GB 5400rpm SATA) while having three times faster (30MB/s) transfer rates between local partitions and USB drives (Kingston 8GB).

I am struggling trying to understand the reason for a fairly slow data transfer rate between two machines. ( tried point to point and also via a 1 gb switch )
One is nfs/http/ftp server ( with raid1 and lvm on top ), the other one my desktop pc. Both OS with default options, no changes to kernel in proc or other sort of thing.
Hardware is full recognized and perfectly working: The server has 4gb ram, Intel Core 2 Duo CPUE6850 @ 3.00GHz, 1000Mb/s NIC card and Lucid 10.04 64 bit, 250Giga Hard disk. The client has 3gb ram, Intel Core 2 CPU 6320 @ 1.86GHz, 1000Mb/s NIC card and Ubuntu Maverick 32bit , 150Gb Hard disk.
Raw data is good:
gettons@gettons-desktop:~$ iperf -c MYSERVER
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to MYSERVER, TCP port 5001

I want a video editing software for combining two videos at frame level. I mean, for eg: to show double action at a time in movie. We shoot two characters separately. And then we combine it as a single video with dual role effect. Now, I think you understood my requirement. Plz anyone tell that type of application which suits my needs.

I recently purchased an iRiver P7 media player which I am using with Rhythmbox under Ubuntu 9.04. The transfer speed when uploading files to the player is phenomenally slow - the first 50 or so MB reported virtually instantly then the speed immediately drops to about 12-15KB/sec yes KB/sec so a 3-400MB video file takes hours to transfer to the player. This happens with the internal memory and the added memory (SD card) too, althoufg it is faster ror the SD card. No other devices have ever behaved like this on this system (and I have used 2 different Creative players, a different iRiver player and numerous memory sticks). The computer is dual booting with windows (for once that was useful) and under windows it doesn't happen, the speed is as expected so it isn't the hardware. I don't want to have to resort to damned windoze just for this. dmesg after plugging in the player shows it identifying both the internal storage and the added SD card but I don't understand the rest of it:
[code]....
This last message gets repeated lots of times, and during transfers it seems to be issued continuously and I suppose this is why the system is so slow because it is always retrying loads of times before a success.
