For sake of a clear picture of the problem, pretend I don't know anything about compiling.
How would I re-compile my current kernel's source? It's the i686 optimized kernel I selected from the install disc.
So I am new to linux and i upgraded my kernel to 4.3.3 and to add the bfq patch. When i enter the command make install I get the following Code:

Now my ethernet drivers are not working.
I have installed the fedora 14, but there is no kernel source tree.I read the doc "building a custom kernel".But I don't want to rebuild a new kernel.I just want to install the source tree of current kernel.Could someone tell me the way?

I downloaded FF from their site, the file name is firefox-3.5.5.tar.bz2, how do I compile this?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to compile the D-Link netcard driver from the official source, and when I first ran "make," I got an error that "make" couldn't be found. So I installed "apt-get install make," then make told me that it needed gcc, I installed "apt-get install gcc." Now make says: make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [LINUX] Error 2 and exits.
I suspect that I need to install some package group which will handle the make and make install (rather than manually trying to fix one hole after another)
why it is that when I download the sendmail debian source package for etch and build it using dpkg-buildpackage -b -nc I get a 645543 byte sendmail executable whereas when I download the sendmail binary that is 703292 bytes.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest kernel liquorix (2.6.35) but when i want to install the Nvidia driver downloaded on the Nvidia website (256.53), i have an error message because Nvidia doesn't found the kernel source tree.
I install linux-image-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb, linux-headers-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb and build-essential. I don't understand why the installation doesn't works.
I'm trying to do the simplest thing. Compile XMMS. I navigated to the folder containing the extracted source and ran ./configure. That failed, so I remembered to install the build-essential package.
After that, I continued and got this output:
It said I didn't have glib installed, whatever that is. I did "apt-get install glib" and it told me it couldn't find the package called "glib". I thought, "Yeah, that seems a little too broad of a package name".
So then I went to Synaptic and did a search for "libglib" and noticed I already have libglib2.0-0 installed, as well as libglib2.0-data and libglib-perl.
How can I get this to to work correctly? I know the process should be ./configure, make, and then make-all, but I get stuck on the ./configure step.

Looks like the headers sys/eventfd.h and linux/virtio_rng.h haven't been selected in my .config file. I just copied my old config from the last kernel I built. This was a while ago (2.6.30), but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.
what config option they are under or what I can do to get rid of this error?

So far, my tests have revealed that Arch Linux runs faster than Debian several media apps. I initially thought this was due to the i686 optimization of Arch, but other mentioned it could simply be a kernel timer issue.
I know for a fact the differences aren't due to bloat, and I've installed both OSes from minimal install means. Only the absolutely needed dependencies have been installed.
I am not new to Debian and used to use commands like "apt-get install <package>", "apt-get update", "apt-get upgrade" and "apt-cache search <string>" regularly. But I never understood those Debian programs and the Debian package system with it's numerous programs and way to install things and work on software and configurations. Now, I just wanted to do something that I thought to be really easy. Get the source of an existing package. And despite spending over 3 hours - including reading the man-pages of commands - I cannot find a way!

I already don't understand why I have two such packages installed. I would like to download the source of my kernel: apt-get source linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64. This downloaded linux-2.6_2.6.26-21lenny4.dsc, linux-2.6_2.6.26.orig.tar.gz and linux-2.6_2.6.26-21lenny4.diff.gz
Then, I wanted to patch this - having found no explanation, I did:
cd linux
patch < ../linux-2.6_2.6.26-21lenny4.diff
That seemed to patch the kernel. But I am not sure - there are new files like this now_

So, how can download the complete Debian kernel source? And what do I need to be able to compile it? And - HOW to just list all available sources and search in them?!? I found lots of webpages where tools like "make-kpkg" are used, which I do not understand again. Under SuSE, I could just select the package from a list, say "make oldconfig install modules modules_install" and be ready. Under Debian, I just find no way ...
I would like to compile a custom xen dom0 kernel. I installed a Debian Squeeze with precompiled xen kernel, and it works fine, but i would like to compile a custom dom0 kernel from source. I tried install kernel source apt-get source linux-2.6 how can I patch this kernel source with xen? but i alway see only the domU kernel params.

After investigating i saw that modules (and maybe kernel) are compiled with debugging symbols enabled.I've checked my lenny router and modules there are without debugging symbols.So stock 2.6.26 from lenny comes without debugging symbols and linux-image .deb file is around 20mb.Stock 2.6.32-5-686 from squeeze comes with debugging symbols enabled - linux-image .deb here is 26mb. (I have used 2.6.32's .config file to build my kernel, then i did make oldconfig.)I guess this is what increase my kernel size, but how to disable it?Or maybe enable stripping of debugging symbols.

The device is "Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Ethernet Controller". I guess the problem comes with the old kernel of version 5. I was intending to compile the latest kernel anyway. But the problem is is there any heads up i need to download the kernel and trying to compile it? Is there anyone who uses Debian on UL80VT. I am fairly new to Linux. My machine is running Debian 5.0.5 with gcc version 4.3. When I try to install the Nvidia QuadroFX 3450 driver I got from the Nvidia web site I get an error saying:
"The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.1) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.3)....."
Does this mean my gcc version is too new for the driver? if so, how do I roll back to a older version?
I am using Lenny kernel version 2.6.26-2-686.I am trying to install some drivers and they need kernel source. I installed kernel source through Synaptic, but the driver installer doesn't find it at the place it expects.
1) Where does Lenny keep the kernel source?
2) Are the kernel sources from Debian and www.kernel.org the same?
3) If I want to download the kernel source manually, where do I get it from?
I'd like to create a custom squeeze kernel. Is it a really bad idea to edit to edit the kernel config file directly instead of using "make config", "make menuconfig" or "make gconfig"? My problem is I missing a search function, for example in "make menuconfig" and cannot find some entries.

I am customizing a kernel and am wondering if there is any advantage to excluding drivers/modules I will not need. My goal is to have a very stable file/web server that boots quickly. The only reason I am customizing this one is to add the SATA drivers for the motherboard I am using.
Here is what will be on it:
Apache / PHP
MySQL
DHCP
NTP
If I want to compile a kernel from source (from kernel.org), including all the drivers I need regardless of their origin, I would not need any firmware-*.deb packages, right? Do the firmware packages add anything that is not present in the latest kernel?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a debian installation with kernel 2.6.32 I had a set of instructions to apply a patch to kernel which I followed to the T. The grub now shows the Debian installation with the old kernel and the Debian installation with the patched kernel.
The trouble is the system goes blank after attempting to start gdm3.
I have tried running in recovery mode and then typing startx but it only shows a blank screen.

Squeeze-beta was my first foray into Debian, and I love it. I changed my setup to a rolling setup with testing (Wheezy), and have done that for several months. Lately, I got a new kernel, but it reboots to a terminal rather than GUI (I'm a simple laptop user). I think it's because of the NVIDIA drivers, and here is what I've tried (meanwhile, I'm using the previous kernel):
# apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
# m-a auto-install nvidia-kernel${VERSION}-source
A blue screen appears that says:
module-assistant error message Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers to use.
You can try:
module-assistant prepare
or
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-2-amd64
I have done both, rebooted, and I still get the blue screen. I also see this message:
nvidia-kernel-source was not built successfully, see:
/var/cache/modass/nvidia-kernel-source*buildlog*
...and I have copy/pasted the file below (which omits lines 101-200 because this message is too long then):

I'm looking for a good IDE for C/C++, that runs well in slackware. I used CodeBlocks, but I can't compile in the current, and its getting a little old. I see a lot of threads talking about anjunta and kdedeveloper, but I don't like these.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I'm building a custom kernel cuz I want the fbcondecor patch in my kernel. I use the same .config that 2.6.32 debian kernel package comes with. This kernel runs perfectly. I pass --initrd to make-kpkg when building the package but no initrd is built when I install it so I have to make it using "mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.33 2.6.33" to get it to boot. Now when I try to build the nvidia drivers it complains it can't find the source. I did build kernel_headers and installed them also the source is in /usr/src/linux. I also tried to specify the path by passing --kernel-source-path= to the nvidia script but no change. What is going on? I've done this fifty times before and never had any problems. Has there been some changes to how debian kernel packages are built? EDIT: Just thought I'd add some info about the steps I took.

EDIT2: I have now tried to build 2.6.32.8 in the same way with the same strange results, anyone have any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong just throw it at me, I'm getting desperate and running out of ideas. I've checked all the kernel source symlinks and everything looks good.
