OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cover Art Plugin Won't Load Because It Fails To Import Python-gstreamer

Debian Multimedia :: Gdm Simple-greeter Config Fails, Squeeze Amd64?

Jul 1, 2010

I want to set the login to the old default of having to enter a username, password. I've tried to use the configuration editor to achieve this and have ticked the "disable-user-list" option under /apps/gdm/simple-greeter but it makes no difference, the greeter still starts with a user list. It appears that the default valuef TRUE for this function is overriding my choice, but I'm notre why. My next step appears to be to edit /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults to change the default value. I haven't actually tried that yet so not sure if it would work but, even if it does, it doesn't seem a very elegant way of setting this up. Is there some simple way of changing the behaviour back to asking for username first?

I seem to remember the whole login process as being more configurable than it is now, with options to choose backgrounds, allow root accest finystem->administration->login_screen only gives a choice between selecting a user or automatic login of a particular user, with no further options available. On a general note, would the old method not be a more secure default than presenting an unauthorised user with a list of login id's to be tried?

Debian :: Disable Autoplay In Totem-gstreamer ( Squeeze I386 )?

Jul 28, 2011

So back in May I built a really sweet new box for my desktop running Ubuntu and put my old one out to pasture as a Fileserver running Squeeze. Well I have a very large DVD collection (900 disks 400 or so titles) that I'm trying to get ripped to hard disk for my popcorn hour. LONG STORY SHORT. When I put a dvd into what should be headless, keyboard-less, and mouse-less fileserver to use vobcopy with it starts up Totem (gstreamer) and loads the dvd menu. ARGGG. I then have to plug in all the hardware, close it, and go back to just using my desktop because it's less of a headache. How can I disable Totem from being a poopy pants and loading every DVD I put in the drive?

Debian Multimedia :: Incorrect Video Resolution In Squeeze NVIDIA?

Jun 21, 2010

Having been using squeeze on my primary system for some time, I decided to install it on my media center PC. After doing a clean install I lost sound (another post) and my maximum video resolution dropped to 1280x1024. I was previously getting 1920x1080 (native) resolution under lenny on this box. So it's a mystery to me why I'm not getting that now. As you can see, the nvidia module is loaded:

# lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 9821382 0
i2c_core 12570 2 i2c_piix4,nvidia

PS--This was installed the "debian way" via module assistant.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Video From Gstreamer On H.624 .mp4s?

Apr 6, 2011

I had been having trouble with Banshee playing podcasts and it turned into a bigger problem. I use VLC so I hadn't noticed, but Totem (and Gstreamer as a whole) can't seem to play h.624 video. All I get is audio, even when I do a command like

gst-launch -v playbin uri=file:///path/to/video.mp4

(Well, now I get nothing, but more on that in a moment).

So I tried reinstalling Gstreamer, and I just tried updating to the Gstreamer Developer PPA. The only change that came from that is that now nothing happens instead of just hearing audio. I've attached the output.

I've gone into gstreamer-properties and tried every configuration. Each time I see the colored stripes and the snowy video corner, but it never seems to make a difference.

Debian Multimedia :: Pulseaudio And Gstreamer Apps Are Crashing?

Aug 18, 2010

I got a problem with gstreamer programs and pulseaudio. I am running Debian Squeeze and needed to install pulseaudio to get better bluetooth-headset support. After installing everything every application except gstreamer applications could access the sound server the right way. Even flash and sdl are running via ALSA routing to pulse.

If I start programs running with gstreamer they crash with a segmantation fault. Totem does not start anyway. If I run it in the terminal it crashes immediately with a segmantation error. The debug mode prints out $ totem --debug

(totem:3450): Totem-DEBUG: Received SaveYourself(SmSaveLocal, !Shutdown, SmInteractStyleNone, !Fast) in state idle
(totem:3450): Totem-DEBUG: Setting initial properties

[Code]....

I have installed the gstreamer plugin for pulseaudio and the gstreamer-plugins-good and bad. I started gstreamer-properties and choosed the right output driver. When testing the peep comes out of the right output.

Via google I founded some bugs, that were similiar to mine. But they had made the mistake not to install the plugins. I also can not choose ALSA in gstreamer and do the routing way. The programs using gstreamer simply crashing. I tried exaile. It also crashes the same way like rhythmbox. Is it a real bug? Or can I do something against that. VLC and kaffeine running very well. But I would be sad about not being able to use rhythmbox. I like that fast program. Or is there a way to get rhythmbox tto not using gstreamer?

Debian :: New Squeeze Install Fails To Boot (not Even To Grub) / Troubleshoot This?

Jun 4, 2011

I recently purchased a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and am having problems installing the latest version of Squeeze from CD. After receiving the laptop, I started it up, configured Windows 7, and confirmed everything is working correctly. Next I went through the Debian installer, which completed successfully. I'll be dual-booting Windows 7 and Debian, so at the partitioning stage I resized my NTFS partition, added a shared VFAT partition, then used the "Guided" install to create my root and swap partitions. My partition layout is code...

I assumed something was wrong with grub, so I booted the CD into rescue mode and chose to reinstall grub onto the Master Boot Record. But nothing changed. Just to experiment, I went into fdisk, deleted all my new partitions (leaving just the Windows ones), and tried rebooting, but the same error happened. I then went through the Debian installer again, being careful to set everything up correctly, but still, the device won't boot.

I'm not even getting to the grub boot screen, so something is wrong even before the point. Reinstalling grub to the Master Boot Record (grub-install /dev/sda) isn't changing anything. How can I troubleshoot this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Success: Fglrx + Radeon HD 2400 + Libva/vaapi GPU Decoding?

Jun 26, 2010

I'm owning an old single Core AMD (Opteron 148, like Athlon 64 3200+), it can't play h264 1080p-Videos without framedrops in active scenes. I'm also owning an not so old AMD/Ati Radeon HD 2400. It's not an UVD2 card, it's not even UVD+, its UVD i.e. UVD1. All articles regarding GPU h264 decoding I've found so far are saying "for vaapi gpu decoding on linux you need to have a UVD2 card". That's wrong! My UVD1-Card is playing fine some demo movies.

Setup:

Ubuntu "Lucid" 10.4
"deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/cutting-edge-multimedia/ubuntu lucid main" in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cutting-edge-multimedia.list

[code]....

(With the original Ubuntu Lucid fglrx (8.723) there's some error, I don't remember the words. It doesn't work for me)It's working. I can play h.264 HD Videos with mplayer and decode it with a Radeon GPU. vlc 1.2 not working so far. It seems it's decoding fine, but screen remains green. Here's a screenshot, no fake! It's a two Monitor setup with fglrx' big Desktop. On the right there's running a movie Trailer (I Am Legend) and on the left there's some status info. Quality is not perfect (as you can see, horizontal displacement), but it's basically working.

Debian Configuration :: Grub Fails To Load From EFI?

Mar 8, 2011

I have happily been booting debian through grub2 by chain loading it with efi (rEFIt), until today, and now get to begin another learning experience I've been using linux for a while, and kept seeing the guides for splitting up /, /var, /tmp, /usr, and /home, into different partitions, so I did just that when I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (I've realized that this was a little bit pointless because I formated them all as ext4, but at least it acts as a safety for mission critical drives when I overfill /home. I unfortunately didn't give /tmp enough space, and it kept crashing SimpleScan so I decided to use gparted to resize it.

The operation went alright as far as I can tell, and was straight forward because there was some free space behind it so I only had to append the partition. I synced the master boot record through rEFIt as usual, but when I booted the linux partition grub did load, and only a blank screen is presented. I eventually figured out I could use the gparted live cd to boot back into debian, and have been screwing around for a while with grub commands trying to figure out how to allow rEFIt to successfully boot GRUB on its own again. I ran grug-mkconfig to replace my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file and have rebooted but that did not help.

I tried reinstalling grub and grub-common with apt-get, but I didn't purge configuration settings for fear of losing something important. My current focus is on the command grub-install. I think i just need to run this command with the /boot device, like su - root; grub-install /dev/sda1 or some thing like that. wipe out the MBR on /dev/sda1, or screw up what good configuration is left in grub, so I want to make sure that I'm using the right /dev. Currently the gparted output looks like this:

/dev/sda1: fat32 - GPT (gpt from fdisk, gparted shows EFI with the boot flag)
/dev/sda2: hfs+ - MacOSx
/dev/sda3: ext4 - /root

[code]...

how the gnome live gparted disk would have been able to boot. I have access to a hard drive so I'll probably end up making backup images of as many of the partitions as I can, and then try more drastic bashing around, but if anyone has any suggestions/wisdom they could offer while I'm researching solutions I'd appreciate it. I eventually want to try to axe my osx partition and boot directly from GRUB2-EFI so I figure it is worth the investment in time to get to know grub a little bit more intimately.

Debian :: 6.01 GRUB Installed But Fails To Load?

Mar 27, 2011

I'm trying to install Debian 6.01 on my PC. I have only 1 hdd and it has 3 partitions. On first there is windows 7 and on second ubuntu 10.10 and GRUB is installed to MBR and I can load both systems with no problems. As PC has no optical drive I was trying to install debian using USB stick but had no success. I was ready to give up when I've discovered that there is a W32 installer that I can run under Win 7. So I downloaded it and executed, it starts and download certain files and then it asks for reboot.

After reboot I can still chose between Win 7 and Ubuntu. If I chose win 7 I'm given a choice to run Windows or to continue setup for debian. Very well installer starts and I can chose all the classic stuff between languages etc. Then I come to a point where I need to choose partitions, ok as I have free 30 Gb partition i choose it for debian with settings:

Format in Ext4
Mount point: /

I already have a swap part that I can use. Done that I can start with selection of packages which goes fine and installs everything directly from debian mirrosrs. After that I choose GRUB to be installed into MBR and it goes fine. Some final steps and reboot.

After reboot GRUB offers me again Ubuntu or Win 7. So I can boot either Ubuntu or win 7 which gives me the same choice from before, Windoes or continue Debian setup. I tried doing the setup again with some repair options that it offers but still nothing happens.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Driver Fails To Load In Kernels 2.6.32-23 And Later

Dec 6, 2010

I've been using kubuntu for a while, and I've been having this issue since the release of the 2.6.32-23 kernel. Originally, I thought it was related to my raid array and this bug: [URL] I'm still not convinced they're not related, but there is also apparently the possiblity of an nvidia driver issue. Previously, I rebooted infrequently, and I had a spare hard drive installed, so my grub menu would always appear (as it detected an alternate OS on this drive) and it was trivial to select the 2.6.32-22 kernel. Since I installed all updates, including the -35 kernel, it ran update-grub and now I have to press shift when I reboot. Specs/Summary:

Kubuntu 10.04
amd64.
nvidia driver 195.36.24
RAID 1 (linux software raid)
kernels installed: 2.6.32-21 - 2.6.32.25

when I boot with -22 or earlier, everything works great. when I boot with -23 or later, I get the kubuntu splash screen, followed by it switching to tty2, then I get it switched back to where the X screen should be, with the system log displayed, and then it switches back to tty2. After installing -35, I panicked a bit as I'd never had the grub screen not show (not knowing about the shift key), and so I poked around logs and it showed nvidia driver errors. I tried removing my xorg.conf file and rebooted, and I got the desktop to show again. I prefer the nvidia driver as I sometimes use dual monitors.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: Suspend/hibernate Resume Fails With Radeon Graphics

Aug 6, 2010

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.

A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.

The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".

If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

Debian Hardware :: SIS Video Controller Incompatible With Squeeze?

Mar 31, 2011

I have been having trouble installing a working Debian 6.0.1a (Squeeze) desktop; I cannot seem to get Xwindoes working (under KDE). Is it possible that my video monitor is simply incompatible with Squeeze? I am using an old but not ancient Samsung SyncMaster 997DF with PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Output of lspci -nn | grep VGA is: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter [1039:6330]

When I compared the contents of /usr/lib/xorg/modules and output of kdm.log between my working (but no longer trusted) Lenny and my nonworking Squeeze, I found that the driver sis_drv.so seems to be loaded by my Lenny but not by my Squeeze, and someone said that Squeeze uses a new version of Xorg which is incompatible with SIS. If so, does that mean that I need to get a new monitor? A new motherboard with video controller? I never had a video card--- do I need one to use Squeeze with KDE?....

When repeated, the process gets completed (without asking for 2nd DVD), the new installation boots normally, but the KDE desktop opens irregularly, with some basic applications missing, and some flaws during certain operations.

The APT does not show any missing/broken link. I tried and repeat the installation with different choices as for kernels and/or desktops, but got the same result. I cannot guess where the problem originates, nor whether it is a known bug of the installer.
