Debian Multimedia :: Start Both Client And UI Of An App From Menu?

Dec 5, 2010

I use a P2P application (KMLDonkey), whose client (mlnet) can be either started automatically, at startup, or manually, after login. At installation, when prompted, I chose the former so as to minimise the number of clicks. However, with time I found it inconvenient because, of course, it would start downloading even though I haven't started its GUI yet or don't plan to use it at all.

What I would like is to click on 1 entry in the menu and have the client and, in sequence, the GUI start when I decide to use the application. Perhaps this would require a short script in /usr/local/bin? I've tried to write one, but failed miserably, as I'm not good at it. I use KDE, but the application or the desktop manager themselves are not important here, for the solution would apply to any application with a separate client/GUI.

Debian Multimedia :: Any Way Get A VoIP-client With ZRTP-support For SIP

Jan 4, 2016

Is there any way get a VoIP-client with ZRTP-support for SIP, without having to add extra third party repos, ect.? Is there anything in the the Debian repo's that actually support this protocol at all?

None of the two clients I've tried so far (Linphone and SFLphone) work out of the box on Debian. Linphone doesn't work with ZRTP on Debian (bug #743474), it work an all other systems, but not for Debian. SFLphone is no longer supported, as it has gone to the project Ring, which cannot be installed without adding additional repos.

Debian Multimedia :: Email Client For Gmail And IMAP

I have used mainly thunderbird/icedove to access my mailboxes via imap. However, now two of them have really several tens of thousands of emails I often experience difficulties in dealing with them (the connection often freezes, browsing my folders is a pain).I tried also sylpheed and claws, but the situation has not really improved.I do not think there is anything fundamentally wrong in the way I configured my accounts on the various clients (actually, some of them even boast automatic setup of gmail accounts).

Debian Multimedia :: Spice Client Window - Black Bars

Dec 22, 2015

Spice server/client configuration. I used remote viewer on debian jessie to connect to a guest virtual machine on kvm and everything works fine. It used a spice server / client and qxl. After I upgraded to debian stretch, I suddenly face issues with black bars in the remote client window. Those black bars appear only on the left and right side of the remote viewer window. Also in full screen mode the black bars sadly appear. Maybe the scaling mode is somehow disabled or my screen resolution of the host was wrong calculated related to that i can change the guest screen resolution but the spice remote client keeps its window size with the black bars. I was trying the last couple of days to resolve this issue, unfortunately without success.

Debian Multimedia :: SFTP Client Setup - User Based Login

I do not want user based logins available and so far the solution works through my Windows machines using WinSCP. The only client I have found for Linux seems to be FileZilla but I have to convert my private key to the FileZilla format which removes the passphrase leaving it nice and insecure.

Networking :: Connecting Debian Client To Voyager Client Via Crossover Cable?

Jan 6, 2011

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

[code]....

I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?

The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Access Real Media?

The Linux version of the Realplayer isn't in the repo (and I don't really want to install it after some of the things I've read about it) but I gotta have my NPR and there's no way I'll EVER go back to a M$ OS. How can I listen to these files without downloading them and then uploading them to a media conversion site? I'm usually very good with google but this one has me stumped.

Debian Multimedia :: Interesting Dilemma Involves Remote Access To Computer

Oct 22, 2010

we usually have to access a batch of computers that is located on campus. This is straightforward enough on Windows, the OS that the computer support center cares about, but I'm interested to see how I would handle this in Debian. The process for Windows is:

1) Run the authentication program, which runs in the background.
2) Use Exceed on Demand (or Putty, but I can't really use that for my classes ), and log into the server. From there, it lets you log in to whatever computer you want. When logging on with Exceed on Demand, Solaris environment is then launched.

Now, I know there's not a lot of technical information here, and I apologize, but I know next to nothing about networking. What I do know is that I'm remotely accessing a secure computer, and then I ssh over to another computer (when using Putty, which was only command-line). I was wondering how easy or hard this would be to do through Debian, including the fact that I need to have the authentication program running.

Fedora Networking :: OpenVPN Client - How To Access Internal Ressources

Sep 26, 2009

I'm using Fedora Core 11 and the client OpenVPN on the network-manager into a segmented infrastructure. It works well.

My laptop is on a dmz wireless Zone 192.168.3.0/24 and access Internet through a firewall via a front-end zone 192.168.65.0/24 with wlan0 interface.

But my laptop can access on a back-end zone 192.168.2.0.24 to a server.

When I start the OpenVPN tunnel, I cannot access on my back-end zone because the kernel routing table is modified (all the traffic is routed through the tun vpn interface)

If I define a static route like route add -host 192.168.2.x gw 192.168.3.2 where x is my file serveur, I cannot connect to this server because the routing is make through the tun interface and not by the wlan0 who can access on is gateway

I want to know where changing the kernel routing table file to access on the Internet and on my back-end zone in a same time.

That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.

Ubuntu :: Give Two Client Users Permission To Access Their File System?

May 1, 2011

The desktop computer of my two children has a total of three users:

1) The superuser (me)
2) The user 1001 (my elder son)
3) The user 1002 (my younger son)

Both users 1001 and 1002 can not access their files system, and also they can not save any attachments from incoming mails.

What I tried so far:
I accessed the file manager as superuser, and went: >Root>Home. Here I right-clicked on the folder User 1001, selected properties, selected the tab 'permissions' and allowed this user to read and write into this folder. I also checked the checkbox extend this permission to all subfolders and its contents.

The problem is, when I reboot, everything is 'forgotten' and I am at quadrant zero again.

Eventually I should state that part of the folders are from a backup drive, because the hard disk had to be replaced so, once I re-installed the OS on the new hard drive, I copied the folders from the backup drive into the home folder.

One last question:
Is there a good tutorial about permissions?
