Debian Multimedia :: Lenny Compatible VLC 1.0.5 - 32 - 64 Bit And Sources

Mar 2, 2010

I had to build it with nls (locales) and the mozilla-plugin disabled, due to the Lenny libc6 causing problems.

Link (about 40 Mb): [url]

Big and Free link: (may disappear): [url]

64-bit debs only (about 9 MB): [url]

I have had reports of the aspect ratio being weird for ATI cards, as well as no full screen, but it works fine in the Virtual Box Lenny, as well as on my Intel graphics.

You will also need the lenny-backports repo, to get some missing or updated libraries. see backports.org

You would need to install the vlc-data deb first, then you can install the rest of the debs: (except for the -dbg version, unless you need it) dpkg -i *386.deb

If you have missing dependencies, you get an error=1, so get the missing dependencies with aptitude -f install or apt-get -f install. You may have to manually install the lenny-backports libraries if you have trouble. You actually don't need the -dev, dbg, and most of the other libraries, so you may want to look at what the vlc metapackage needs and install those.

Debian :: Change The Sources List To Include "stable" Instead Of "lenny"?

Aug 18, 2010

I am curious that if I change the sources list to include "stable" instead of "lenny" (for the Lenny release, for example) will my system upgrade to the Squeeze sources when Debian Squeeze becomes the new stable and Lenny is the oldstable? I'm brand-spanking-new to Debian and I love stability (for my workstation) but I also need a lot of features that are only available with some newer packages. I plan on having to compile a lot of packages from source but I would really like to be able to ignore making changes to my sources list. Will changing "lenny" to "stable" make this work?

Debian Installation :: Keep Sources.list At "Lenny" Or "stable"?

Apr 15, 2010

I am currently running debian Lenny on my desktop. I was wondering, what happens if your sources.list is set to stable as opposed to Lenny? Does it mean that it would update straight to Sqeeze when it is finished with testing and released as stable? Is it reccomended to have this "rolling update" or should I have my sources set to "Lenny" and then change it to Squeeze when it becomes stable?

Im trying to use a Gnome theme designed for Ubuntu on Debian. Ive installed it into /usr/share/themes and the window border and close, minimise maximise buttons show up right but the other controls (buttons, scrollbars, progress bars etc) dont and default to the generic ones.

I know nothing about how themes work really but I assumed as long as both distros were using Metacity it would work?

The one in upstream has problems, but reading the bug reports provided the answer. I disabled the building of the python2.5 modules, and added python-httplibs2 as a Depends, and it magically started to work. Deb file and source: [URL] This is a temporary location, I'm sure upstream will have a fixed version soon.

Try doing gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list in a terminal if your using gnome or kdesu kwrite /etc/apt.sources.list if your running kde.

Do not give up once you get the hang of things debian rocks.

Debian Multimedia :: No Sound In Lenny?

May 2, 2010

recently installed lenny (5.0.4). I can't get any sound whatsoever (except pc speaker). I had to muck around with vlc to get video working, that works fine but there's still no sound. I have a C-media CMI8738 sound card, I've run alsaconf in root which seems to work fine, I've mucked around with alsamixer (v1.0.16) changing volumes and muting things but haven't had any change. Computer is an AMD Athlon xp2500.

Debian Multimedia :: Lenny Hangs After GDM

Jul 14, 2010

I have a computer that is off the internet. It usually works right since I took great care to make it as 'clean' as possible from outside forces.Lately it just hangs whenever GDM is about to start. How to troubleshoot?

I tried a live CD SystemRescueCD, it works even the desktop environment works. so I e2fsck the partitions of the hard drive okay, memory test/checked the 1.2GBRAM -- passed other than these, I have no clue how to troubleshoot.Oh, I also used an nvidia driver which I forgot how I did it because it was installed almost a year ago.

Debian Multimedia :: Installing LibGLEW 32 Bit On 64 Bit Lenny

Mar 3, 2010

I'm running 64-bit Debian lenny, and am trying to run a 32-bit program that requires libGLEW. I've installed libGLEW using apt-get install libglew1.5, but when I try to run the program I get the error: error while loading shared libraries: libGLEW.so.1.5: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

It seems the default install of libGLEW is in 64-bit mode, and the program can't use the 64-bit libraries. It looks like I need to install libGLEW in 32-bit mode, but I've no idea how to do that.

Debian Multimedia :: VLC - No Enque Option On Lenny?

May 18, 2010

I`m using the VLC player available for Lenny. I used VLC in other distributions and it always played mkv`s fine and had an option to have only one instance of VLC running, so it would enque added files. But the Lenny version doesn`t seem to have it and doesn`t play mkv files as smooth as Lennys default player, which is odd.

I`m fine using the inbuilt player for mkv`s but is there an option to have just one instance of vlc? I like to click files and just have them added to the current playlist rather than have them all open in new instances of the program.

I now have a newer vlc installed, with enque and other newer features than the default, thanks to following the advice of and using packages built by stevepusser.

Debian Multimedia :: KDE 3.5 On Lenny Root Password Or Sudo?

Aug 14, 2010

I have just installed Lenny on a Thinkpad R50p. During the install I opted for no root password, using the sudo option instead (I've been used to this on Kubuntu for a long time). After installing, I added KDE 3.5 with apt-get install kde-desktop - all seems to be OK, except that I am unable to add packages or perform tasks for which a root / admin password is needed. It seems that the install-time choice of sudo (shared password) does not propagate to the KDE install, which is still expecting a root password.

how to either enable the KDE desktop to work with this shared password setup, or whether there is a better route to a KDE 3.5 desktop than just installing as I did (I am aware of Trinity KDE 3.5 but the Pearson Computing source is still not up, are those packages available for Lenny anywhere else, and are they recommended?). I can of course rerun the whole install and choose root & user passwords but if there is a smarter solution it would be less of a 'reinstall Windows' type of fix

I've had a very frustrating time the last few months trying to find a KDE4 based desktop that is stable enough and not lacking some basic functions (print manager, for goodness sake), so I have temporarily thrown in the towel and will try a Stable installation that is not changing (breaking) all the time, until KDE4 series gets past this adolescent stage of development and settles down.

I do need to get back to a system I can work on rather than keep on trying different installations!

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Mount Usb Stick From Konsole (lenny)

Nov 19, 2010

Due to a bug that will be fixed at squeeze (I'm running lennyx64), I can't mount ntfs partitions from gui interface (or else, directories with non-English characters will be ignored).

So I'm mounting with disk-manager (hd partitions only), or from konsole. Obviously, mounting from konsole, is the only option for usb flash sticks.

Suddenly, just out of the blue, today debian stopped mounting ntfs partitions from konsole. Since this was my only option for mounting safely my friend's sticks, I have a big problem right now.

I can't figure out many things from the error message:

Debian Multimedia :: Workspaces After Upgrade From Lenny To Squeeze

Feb 16, 2011

I have upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. Aside from a few installation issues, the upgrade went relatively smooth. I had a problem with the graphics proprietary driver not being installed after the upgrade but I was able to solve the problem. I also successfully upgraded the filesystem from ext3 to ext4. One thing that did break on the upgrade is that now I do not have the capability to add and switch workspaces. I went into compizfusion and added for horizontal workspaces, but clicking on them does not switch to them. If I right-click on the preferences, it does not let me allow to add any more workspaces. I can change the number workspaces displayed through Genetal tab in compiz but the graphics appeared that they exist, but when I click or try to even switch between them it does not work. I was able to send a window to workspace two but then I lose all access to it. So it seems it might even exist but the applet in bottom right corner does not let me switch between them. Also draggin a window of the edge to another workspace does not work.
