Debian Multimedia :: Evince - Entering Data Into PDF Files?

Some PDF files have a functionality that text and amounts can be filled in some parts of the file, after which it can be printed (most of the times NOT saved). Our tax authorities have these files as well, you can download them, fill in text and amounts, it even counts it for you, and you can print and send.
Unfortunately, I can't use that functionality in Evince (running Squeeze). I tried this with Adobe (also in Squeeze) and it didn't work either. In Win it does work, but of course I would like Debian to be "allround" Can it be that some application must be installed to use this function?

I have installed some pdf readers on my notebook, and the one I most liked was evince. But there are two available evince packages: evince and evince-gtk. What is the difference between them? Does one of them have advantages as to the other?

i'm using debian 8.3 with gnome 3.14.4.Every time i'm opening a pdf file with evince, either by using terminal or nautilus, i can see as a default the thumbnails sidebar. Is there any option that i can use in the terminal, that can hide thumbnails sidebar at the opening?
I know that i can use F9 shortcut to hide the sidebar after the file opening, but i'm asking for an option so that i will not see the sidebar at all when the pdf file is opening.

I've been having a problem with printing a particular pdf file from Evince. The pdf is opened and displayed correctly but when I want to print all I get is sheets with only punctuation marks on them. These punctuation marks correctly correspond to what is in the document but all the text in between them is not printed.

Yesterday I updated some packages with the Update manager. A new version of evince was updated, too. However, no pdf, ps files can be opened by it after that.Running from the command line, get error like:"evince: symbol lookup error: evince: undefined symbol: ev_get_locale_dir"I just wonder how to solve this. Or how to rollback to older version?

1. Evince is somehow screwing up font creation when displaying dvi files. I can preview the dvi file fine under xdvi. When I try with evince, I kicks off a slew of metafont font-creation runs, then shows me totally garbled pages -- the layout is correct, but none of the characters are right. This happens for documents that primarily use Times Roman fonts.
2. *Every* time evince comes up, it insists on starting in continuous / "fit page width" mode. I don't want either one. I want continuous-mode*off* and the window in the "best fit" view. So I have to click, drag, click, click, drag, release *every* time I pop up a file. It's very annoying. There doesn't appear to be any key in the gnome gconf config database I can set to affect these things. How do I fix this?...

I am using CentOS 5.5 64 bit.
My work requires me to have a lot of postscript files. Hence i have elaborate names for easy identification. For example --- AP-1_Jul-Ctrl-noEqSA_bg25C_precip,U250-150_xy.ps. I am unable to open them using evince. I get a blank evince screen with loading written on it. The same file named as 1.ps opens in a jiffy. As of now evince quickly opens pdf files with long names. But i would not like to convert ps to pdf.
Even kghostview does not open these long-named files.

I noticed (in my couple of days Debian experience) that most of my PDF files renders poorly in Evince. And poorly is gentle word to say, as they are unreadable: So I searched Software Center for some programs and installed XPDF, but this program does not belong in my time perception so I ditched it. Then googling, I found Foxit deb package, which shows fine: but I'd like to use something else if possible on Linux system I did not try to install Adobe Reader as I understand it's bloated and slow program, and I felt nostalgic towards SumatraPDF which I use on my Windows 7 OS. I guess there is no hope for such slick PDF viewer on Linux, as I googled as said, but knowing that SumatraPDF's PDF engine is MuPDF, I just feel sorry that developers prefer only Windows version I'm curious which program, experienced Debian users find appropriate for viewing PDF files

I tried the above using an existing multisession CD where data files were previously burned in a different pc using K3b. However, when the burning was completed successfully, the CD could not be read at all. I repeated the process with a blank CD choosing to leave it open in order to add more data later. All went well and the CD was readable but when I tried to add data to the same CD I got the message

I opted not to continue despite the temptation to see how invisible files can be read.
To sum it up, I find this turn of events absolutely appalling given that Brasero is the default software for CD burning in my system (Xubuntu 9.10). Can anyone tell me how to resolve this glaring shortcoming of Brasero so as to keep all my data files easily accessible in multisession CDs?

I am having some problems editing the meta data tags of some music files. The problem is that i am unable to get some files to show up in either EasyTag or Musicbrainz. Problem is when i go to 'add folder/file' i can't see the songs while browsing.
From what i have observed it seems that the songs for which this is an issue are those which i have converted using sound converter. Here it seems that it is the same files in both programmes so i am thinking that there must be something i can do to the file to have it be recognised.

streaming videos i sometime want to save them, after watching. generally they're saved as flash videos or mpeg-4 video, which is all fine.however periodically they're split-up and saved in smaller chunks with names like data_1, data_2, data_3 etc. these range from 14.0 - 44.0 MB. the file in question (currently i'm trying to save from the cache) was from divxden, or possibly divxstage.eu either way i think it used the totem plugin.so, my question is: does anyone know if these files can be stuck back together, or if this feature can be changed so streamed files are kept intact?

Is it possible to switch users in Debian without entering a password, as in Ubuntu Maverick? I already tried adding a nopasswdlogin group but it did not work, even though the "don't ask for password on login" entry in the login manager is no longer greyed out. Replacing gdm3 with gdm also did not work.

I use an android app (Exif4film) for recording EXIF data (only aperture, shutter speed) when shooting an old analog full-manual film camera.
Everytime i take a shot, i dial in the app the shutter speed and aperture settings. Later i want to see if my settings were right.
The app exports an xml file. What software should i use to extract the exposure settings and to put them on the corresponding picture?

I just installed debian-6.0.1a-i386-netinst yesterday on my Dell Dimension 4100. I have a serial keyboard and mouse, which both worked fine during the install and the keyboard allowed me to enter the correct passphrase. After I enter the passphrase the PC continues to boot up, and it gets to a black screen with small fuzzy/distorted "DELL" logo's on the top part of the screen going from left to right.
What is wrong with my PC? What can I do to troubleshoot this?
I really would like to get debian up and running on this desktop

I'm trying to connect to the VPN of my employer; after fix various minor issues I reach this point in which the DNS entries and the default gateway of the VPN are overwritten with the values of the eth0 device that appears by default. Therefore the vpn is not useful.

I have a new smartphone with Cyanogenmod 12 (based on Android 5) and a new ext SD card in the phone which has been formatted. I turned on "USB debugging" in Android and connected the phone to Debian KDE with a USB cable. The phone shows up and mounts, and I can browse the files in Dolphin and copy from the phone to the desktop, but I can't copy from desktop to phone or modify the contents, even on the ext SD card. In Dolphin I always get the same error message, "writing to camera is not supported", even though I mounted the device as MTP* (not PTP) and even though I'm trying to write to the ext SD card which is not even where the phone camera stores things.
I chose to mount as MTP within Android. I don't know if I also need choose an MTP option within KDE somehow, or how to do that.

On my new 32-bit dell-vostro-1014 with debian-lenny OS I have installed via apt-get both smplayer and vlc-mediaplayer and have ripped the movie dvds by k3b and kept them as .avi files. While smplayer can play them, vlc-mediaplayer does not show the picture, only the voices are played. If I play the dvd from the optical tray then vlc poses no problem. Is it an inherent defect of the vlc package? If not what's the remedy?

I have just installed Debian 6.0.2.1 X86_64. I have enabled the Debian-Multimedia repository, and I have installed gstreamer base, good, bad and ugly plugins, and w64codecs too. Now I want to play MOV files using totem, it says it needs "MPEG-4 Video decoder" to play the file. When I press search, it finds no results. what other packages do I need to play MOV files?

I was wondering what the reason was for disabling a feature like - creating new documents and files on desktop - by default?
If someone installs debian with desktop environment this user probably also want to use the desktop as a workplace, so why is that not a default setting?
But also in general i dont get it, i dont see any reason, why this is disabled.

When I try to play any music or movie file over my network....VLC or any other player gives me errors. I don't have any problems when I copy movie files directly to my hard drive from my network. This is on Debian 8 if that information is of any relevance here...

I have several lectures from a class that were distributed as .pps files. When I try to open them with Impress, the slide show immediately starts playing. When the end of the slide show is reached, Impress closes. So, I have no way of looking at these slide shows in the editing window (which is what I need to do). I have tried opening these presentations both from the command line, and by starting Impress then selecting File > Open.
Once the presentation starts, I can switch to the editing window, but essentially all buttons and menu items are "grayed out": [URL] I can't even save the presentation as a native OOffice type.
