Debian Multimedia :: DockbarX Starts Only As Root
Apr 18, 2015
I am using Debian Jessie x64 with XFCE 4.10:
Code: Select allnickolay@nickolay-pc:~$ uname -a
Linux nickolay-pc 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-2 (2015-04-13) x86_64 GNU/Linux
And am having a problem with dockbarx.
Whenever I try to launch it as a regular user, I get:
Code: Select allnickolay@nickolay-pc:~$ dockx
DockbarX 0.91.4
DockbarX init
DockbarX reload
Restarting DockManager Helpers failed.
Traceback (most recent call last):
[CODE]...
I tried reinstalling the packages, but this did not work:
Code: Select all sudo apt-get purge dockbarx*
 sudo apt-get install dockbarx dockbarx-themes-extra
 sudo apt-get install xfce4-dockbarx-plugin
The system is upgraded to the latest available packages in the repositories.

I just installed Lenny base and added Fluxbox as wm. I can start Fluxbox from root with "startx" command but only get a light blue screen that is frozen if I try to start Fluxbox from the command line user ID using "startx." I think that it might be an ownership problem but I'm not sure what files I should change the owrnship of, if any. Some of the in installation of fluxbox was done from the root directory instead of from the user directory using the sudo command.

I am trying to add a launcher for Guayadeque music player on my DockbarX, so I clicked on the icon of the running application (RMB) and chose the 'Create new activator' option. It does not work at all, creates no launcher. What am I doing wrong?

I'm connected to the internet using a wireless router. Each time I boot, I have to grant root privileges and type in a shell: iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys key dhclient wlan0 Isn't there a file(or location) that I can modify to automatically grant root privileges and execute these commands when debian starts? Something like autoexec.bat in windows.
Something else I'd like to mention is when I execute iwconfig.... for the first time, I get this incomplete result:
IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"linksys"

JuK works, but I prefer Amarok. I'm running KDE on Jessie. Happened after an update, but I should mention that I update rarely due avoid breakage. I update big security flaws (such as bash and heartbeat) individually. At first I thought Amarok wasn't starting at all. The icon on the task bar came up, ground away with the wait a minute rotating circle, then disappeared.
I thought Amarok wasn't starting at all, but I discovered later that System Monitor showed it as running normally - not zombie, and not consuming excess ram or cpu. However, clicking show application window did nothing. So the problem is no Amarok GUI.
Google. Result: no fix found.uninstall completely and reinstall. Result: no change.Run as different user (root, for diagnostic purposes only). Result: no change. delete amarokrc, amarok_homerc, amarok-appletsrc. Result: no change.
Amarok --debug
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

After deleting a ntfs partition, grub is giving me troubles. My fdisk -l gives:
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 3824 30716248+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 3825 121600 946035720 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 3825 4716 7164958+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
[Code]....
I have one harddrive and a DVD drive. In the bios, the harddrive is mentioned first. So (hd0,5) should point to the /dev/sda6.
BUT when I start my computer, it returns to the grub prompt. The command root gives: (hd0,6).
Why? It should be (hd0,5).
At the grub prompt I enter: root (hd0,5) and configfile /grub/grub.conf and the computer boots fine to fedora.
How can I tell grub use the correct partition?

After upgrading to Lucid, gnome-terminal and xterm both start in the root directory (/); I'd like for them to start in my home directory instead. I had added "cd /home/myname" to the end of .bashrc, and this worked well as a temporary fix, but was never necessary in Karmic. Furthermore, modifying .bashrc in this way renders Nautilus' "Open in Terminal" menu item useless, as it still opens the home directory instead of the folder Nautilus was viewing.

To use most of my Kali applications, I want to be able to log into an X session as root. I know it is generally a bad idea and I don't want to do it as a rule, but it is useful for penetration testing (e.g. nmap and its GUI don't have most of the useful options when run as a regular user).
So how do I get GDM3 to allow me to log in as root? Currently, if I type in the user name "root" and log in, it just takes me back to GDM3. Could it work to add root to my user group (I really don't want to add all kinds of security holes)?

I'm on Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5. Basically, I can use my password for things like logging in, or authenticating on a shell with sudo successfully. But in other cases, I am asked to "become root", and when I enter my usual password, I'm told to check if I entered my password correctly. This happens with Aptitude (terminal GUI), for example: from Actions, I try to update the package list, and when I enter my password, I can read su: Authentication failure. However, if I start Aptitude by typing kdesudo aptitude on Konsole I can enter my password in the authentication box successfully, and use Aptitude with administrative privileges.
The example is valid also for other applications, such as System Monitor: just for the sake of the example, if I try to stop a process owned by root, say Aptitude, I'm asked for a password to become root, but my password doesn't do the trick. I'll have to open it from terminal with kdesudo ksysguard, then I'll be allowed to kill that process. Does it have anything to do with my choice at installation? I think I must have chosen to leave the root password field blank, and only entered my password as a user, for it explained I could become root anytime if there was need to with sudo.

I have just installed Lenny on a Thinkpad R50p. During the install I opted for no root password, using the sudo option instead (I've been used to this on Kubuntu for a long time). After installing, I added KDE 3.5 with apt-get install kde-desktop - all seems to be OK, except that I am unable to add packages or perform tasks for which a root / admin password is needed. It seems that the install-time choice of sudo (shared password) does not propagate to the KDE install, which is still expecting a root password.
how to either enable the KDE desktop to work with this shared password setup, or whether there is a better route to a KDE 3.5 desktop than just installing as I did (I am aware of Trinity KDE 3.5 but the Pearson Computing source is still not up, are those packages available for Lenny anywhere else, and are they recommended?). I can of course rerun the whole install and choose root & user passwords but if there is a smarter solution it would be less of a 'reinstall Windows' type of fix
I've had a very frustrating time the last few months trying to find a KDE4 based desktop that is stable enough and not lacking some basic functions (print manager, for goodness sake), so I have temporarily thrown in the towel and will try a Stable installation that is not changing (breaking) all the time, until KDE4 series gets past this adolescent stage of development and settles down.
I do need to get back to a system I can work on rather than keep on trying different installations!

I am attempting to launch kate via kdesu as well as from the command line and it fails both times. I have (after the first failed attempt) coppied my .kde folder to /root and still am not able to launch it (it works fine under my login). The following is what I get after removing my personal .kde folder from root and launching kate: kate(16689): Session bus not found
KCrash: Application 'kate' crashing...
sock_file=/root/.kde/socket-debian/kdeinit4__0
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
KCrash cannot reach kdeinit, launching directly.

gpsbabel has always been a little awkward to get going, but it works well once it does. Out of the box on Lenny, gpsbabel just gave errors for me reading from a garmin unit, and the required solution was two steps: firstly, remove (and blacklist) the kernel module "garmin_gps". Secondly, add a udev rule like this:SYSFS{idVendor}=="091e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="0660", group="plugdev" and save this as /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules.
Now, I never understood why or how that worked, but it did (on Lenny), straight away, and was listed as gpsbabel's solution here (I notice it now says MODE="666").
Anyway, now I'm on Squeeze and have the same problems again. I've blacklisted garmin_gps again, and it doesn't appear in lsmod.
I've still got my udev rule, but now gpsbabel fails as a normal user with the error:

I have headless debian as a server which i use over tightvnc server running on it. Vnc works fine but I can't for example run sudo mousepad or any other gui app from terminal, it says something about not having the rights to open it as root. I understand this has something to do with security, but my computers are behind nat so the vnc server can only be connected inside my lan so i don't mind.

I installed Jessie with Cinnamon alongside Win 7 - all went quite well though I did have to do a bit of guessing along the way.
Following online tutorials etc, I tried to install sudo from the terminal. It did not go well - some stuff appeared that was not shown in the instructions from many sites. So I abandoned it, or so I thought.
Then I discovered that my root password was no longer recognised. So I reset it, following online instructions.
This was successful apparently, as I can log in as root and see this in the terminal.
But on trying to start Synaptic ( and later others), I found that the new root password would is not authenticated, but my user password does authenticate successfully. This seems to be the wrong way round!

I recently "upgraded" to the latest skype and now every time I open an interactive root shell, up pops skype. I can close skype then control-C in the terminal window to get the shell I want, but this is annoying to say the least. Maybe my google-foo is off, but all I can find is articles on how to run skype as root, which is no use. I've tried searching the startup files for "skype" (case independant), but so far all I can find is "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ /usr/bin/skype" in the root .bashrc which shouldn't be starting the app.
what could be causing this?

I've been using AWN for awhile but with the latest news surrounding dockbarx I'd like to return to gnome-panel. Unfortunately certain applets like time and session control look terrible when the panel is to the right (you have to read the text vertically). Does gnome-panel have any icon based appllets for time and session control? much like awn?

It seems that when I start up any video in VLC recently that it automatically opts for the left only audio channel. This means that I have to go into the audio options with every movie or show I watch and switch it to stereo mode. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to get VLC to automatically start up in stereo. The videos I have been watching have stereo audio so that is not the problem. I have worked though all of the advanced audio options and I haven't found a way to be able to set this up.

I ran it in CLI & got:
Code:

So what now, re-install through Synaptic?

It was running squeeze before it became stable. X was running fine and loading automatically on booting. Then I did not use it for some time. Then I ran apt-get updates and upgrades after squeeze became stable. A few packages were kept back. So I did aptitude dist-upgradeIt installed some things and maybe removed some things. After that it will boot only toconsole. When I do startx on the command line, X session starts and everything seems normal. But it will not boot to the GUI like before. I also checked in the Synaptic and saw xorg and xserver-xorg still installed

Upon booting, how can I know which program starts first? Also, how can I force something to start after something else? For instance, how do I make sure that everything I deem as "not urgent" to load after the GUI and also how do I make sure things like firestarter start before fail2ban, etc?

I tried out DockBarx on my previous Ubuntu computer and really liked it. I installed openSUSE not too long ago and I just decided it's about time to get it back! However, I'm having some trouble installing it. My initial attempt was to simply download the tarball of dockbarx from GNOME-Look, untar it and run setup.py. Unfortunately, it will not run for me..not as root, standard user, anything. I do have Python-Base installed, and my "cnf python" does return a successful response. My PATH has /python's location in it and everything.I then tried the .rpm but I need to install python-keybinder, pyxdg and dbus, but I cannot find any downloads or repo's with it. I could simply be missing it though. So, basically, I'm asking all of you who have successfully installed it on your openSUSE system to inform me on how you did it.

I edit a lot of stuff using GIMP, and tend to have about six windows open at once and I switch between them constantly, but I use dockbarx as my window list and it always groups windows making it harder to choose which window I need, So my question is, Is it possible to stop dockbarx from grouping windows? I looked through the settings in the preferences window, but I couldn't see a setting, I was thinking that I could achieve it by editing some sort of config file, except I don't know how.
