Debian Multimedia :: Authentication - Root PW Rejected / User PW Accepted

Jun 21, 2015

I installed Jessie with Cinnamon alongside Win 7 - all went quite well though I did have to do a bit of guessing along the way.

Following online tutorials etc, I tried to install sudo from the terminal. It did not go well - some stuff appeared that was not shown in the instructions from many sites. So I abandoned it, or so I thought.

Then I discovered that my root password was no longer recognised. So I reset it, following online instructions.

This was successful apparently, as I can log in as root and see this in the terminal.

But on trying to start Synaptic ( and later others), I found that the new root password would is not authenticated, but my user password does authenticate successfully. This seems to be the wrong way round!

Debian Installation :: User Password Rejected And Have To Login As Root

Oct 28, 2014

Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.

Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.

Debian Multimedia :: Changes To System Settings In KDE Are Not Accepted?

Jan 11, 2011

Just completed setting up dual monitors on my computer, it's a dual boot Debian with Squeeze on disk one and Sid on disk two. My problem is that everything is working properly on Squeeze, but any changes I make to system settings in Sid setting up my second monitor are not being accepted. I'm at a point where I have redone everything twice and with no effect, can some one point me to some effective documentation or something I can use to correct this condition.

Ubuntu :: Chown As Non-root User (with Authentication)?

Sep 19, 2010

I am currently responsible for administering a shared Ubuntu machine with several unrelated users. Some of these users own multiple accounts and would like to "chown" files between them. Currently, I must handle such requests manually, and this is inconvenient.

I am looking for a way to allow non-root users to chown files with authentication (i.e. prompt for the password of the user to which ownership is being set to). This would prevent an exploit such as:

Quote:
cp /bin/bash ~/sudobash
chmod 4777 ~/sudobash
chown root:root ~/sudobash

Does such a solution exist?

Ubuntu :: Authentication Password Rejected On VNC'd Desktop / What To Do?

Feb 8, 2011

I've been using the Ubuntu desktop for a couple of years now, but I don't have much experience using the terminal.

I've just set up a home server using Ubuntu-server 64bit which will be headless and its main function will be a Mythtv backend.

I've worked out how to use VNC to send a desktop from the server to my laptop, but when I try to use any programs which require root privileges such as synaptic or the user/groups manager, the pop-up asking for authentication refuses to accept my password.

Is there a setting I need to change on the server which prevents remote users from getting root privileges on the desktop?

SSh window says invalid password for random passwords and the SSH window disappears when I type in the right password. Can you please let me know if I can somehow get back in by stopping any of the services

Debian Multimedia :: Cannot Become Root With My User Password?

Jan 26, 2011

I'm on Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5. Basically, I can use my password for things like logging in, or authenticating on a shell with sudo successfully. But in other cases, I am asked to "become root", and when I enter my usual password, I'm told to check if I entered my password correctly. This happens with Aptitude (terminal GUI), for example: from Actions, I try to update the package list, and when I enter my password, I can read su: Authentication failure. However, if I start Aptitude by typing kdesudo aptitude on Konsole I can enter my password in the authentication box successfully, and use Aptitude with administrative privileges.

The example is valid also for other applications, such as System Monitor: just for the sake of the example, if I try to stop a process owned by root, say Aptitude, I'm asked for a password to become root, but my password doesn't do the trick. I'll have to open it from terminal with kdesudo ksysguard, then I'll be allowed to kill that process. Does it have anything to do with my choice at installation? I think I must have chosen to leave the root password field blank, and only entered my password as a user, for it explained I could become root anytime if there was need to with sudo.

Ubuntu Networking :: WEP Wireless Authentication Rejected (Though Key Is Correct)?

Feb 18, 2011

I have 2 laptops running Ubuntu 10.04. One connects to my Linksys wireless modem fine while the other does not. The one that does not connect, will connect fine within the instances of Windows XP SP3 and Puppy Linux 5.1 that run on the same laptop. Ubuntu wireless worked fine with version 8.04 on this laptop before upgrading to 10.04.

When trying to connect within 10.04, Ubuntu pops up the dialog box to enter the authentication key. It rejects the correct key, and after a moment, pops up the same dialog box asking for the key again. I'm using WEP 40/128-bit encryption and the key I enter in the dialog box is the correct 26-character key.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 (1g ram/40g disk). Here are some vital outputs root@user-laptop:/home/bsmis# iwconfig

Debian Multimedia :: Password Rejected When App Launched Via Gnome Menu

Jul 26, 2015

I use Debian Jessie with Gnome.

I have installed Timeshift. Administrative password is requested when I click Timeshift icon in Gnome menu. I enter the password (or paste it to be sure) but it always returns with "incorrect password, please try agian" message. I am sure that I type my password correctly.

I looked at the icon's properties. It runs "timeshift-launcher". I changed it as "gksudo timeshift" or "sudo timeshift" or "gksu timeshift", enabled "Launch in terminal", disabled, but nothing changed. Always same password request window appears and it rejects my password.

However when I run "sudo timeshift" or "gksudo timeshift" command in Terminal it accepts my password and runs.

When I run for example Synaptics via Gnome Menu, password request window is with black background and it accepts my password. However when I run Timeshift, password request window is with gray background and it rejects.

Root password was not defined in my system during installation and I am the only user. I run administrative commands via sudo without any problem.

Debian :: When Open Up Konsole And Type 'su' And My Root Password - Authentication Failure ?

Apr 8, 2010

My system software is installed on an encrypted LVM on hda1 and hda2. My home directory takes up the whole of hdb1 which is also encrypted. I can boot up into the kde desktop okay, but when I open up konsole and type 'su' and my root password I get the message "su: Authentication failure". I am absolutely certain that I am using the right password.

Even more strangely, if I fire up synaptic and give it that same password I am able to install software. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's gone wrong and how I can fix it?

I can also type Ctrl-Alt-F2 and log in as root to do administrative tasks without any problems so I cannot understand why konsole has locked me out.

Since upgrading my Debian/unstable amd64 installation a few days back I can no longer log in as either root or user, whether to SDDM, via the console, or via ssh. When trying with the console, I can see the login message flash briefly on the screen, before the console resets itself.

I can boot into recovery mode, and examine log files. I enabled systemd debug logging and, amid reams of messages, these seem the most pertinent:

Debian :: Why $http_proxy Only Works For Root User In Apt-get

Feb 24, 2010

I just setup a debian OS(in emulator) and trying to use apt-get update. When I log in as root and do:

export http_proxy=http://proxy.com:9090
apt-get update   works

If I use another user and ssh to this debian, sudo apt-get update will fail to work because it don't use the proxy. I try to do the export http_proxy stuff again but still not working. echo $http_proxy showing it already set correctly...

p/s:
I have a workaround by adding this lines in the apt.conf
ACQUIRE {
http::proxy "http://proxy.com:9090"
}

but I really don't want this solutions because I want to easily disable the http_proxy in command prompt (by unset it).
