Been running into a problem where the desktop won't load after I login. It'll just flash my wallpaper for a second and goes back to this blue-ish background and stays there, so the only solution I found was to just press and hold down the power switch, turn on the system again, and login again.
View 7 RepliesI have Debian 8.4.0 with lightdm. I'm trying to load some command lines at session startup, putting these in ~/.profile but the file is not loaded. The same procedure works well if I switch lightdm to gdm3.
Anyway, there is some idea to load some script lines at the session startup? The file .bash_profile neither works. I don't want to use ~/.bashrc because it would load every time I open a terminal. Neither to use init.d because it would load for all users.
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
When I log in locally, sometimes my theme isn't applied. This problem started a few weeks ago, but before that the same theme would load just fine every time. In order to get my chosen theme to load, I go System > Preferences > Appearance. As soon as I click "Appearance"...boom. My theme loads and all is fine. I don't have to change settings or anything....just start the "Appearance" utility.
This doesn't all of the time, only sporadically. Another thing to mention is that I'm using AWN. When this happens, AWN doesn't load all of the launchers. I killall and restart AWN and all is good there. Anybody have a clue what could be going on? Compiz related?
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.
On login, my skydome (in the Desktop Cube) doesn't load up. Instead, I get a gradient.
I go look in the settings manager and sure enough, I see the skydome image file checked there, and I even changed my gradient colors to be 100% transparent. Makes no difference! All I have to do is change /anything/ in the skydome settings and the skydome image suddenly shows up. Literally changing the gradient color will even make the skydome image show up.
Recently I changes settings on Ubuntu Desktop and I choose gnome failsafe login, hence everything loads nice except when the user accounts is load it only appears the background and the terminal. Is there anyway to have the desktop back the way it was with the complete gui interface?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Debian 6. I noticed that when ever I try to open certain websites, the pages doesn't load at all. This happens when I try to open [URL] and certain other web pages. Browsers like chrome, epiphany, iceweasel, opera all had the same issue. The download speed is pretty normal. note that disabling ipv6 inside the browser configuration didn't help fight this issue.

sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
(New thread due to significant change in info)5th gen iPod is recognized, but will not load files into banshee. It is the latest version of banshee. My ipod (named SON2) shows up in the menu, but when selected it hangs on "Loading SON2" and showing that it's busy...but this goes on without end, no files ever get loaded. Also, banshee doesn't recognize any music or video on the ipod, only "other". View 9 Replies View RelatedBuilt a machine w/ i5-4440 & gtx 960. I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel & xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. Xorg -configure fails, so I added xorg.conf I found online, makes no difference. xrandr can't open display. startx of course fails.
Backstory: My plan was to dual boot sid + stable as fallback with shared partition. First installed stable and whether connected to mobo or gfx card, I couldn't get login on tty, it would just hang on errors. So I installed sid (this time using lvm to hopefully make partitioning easier) and while I get the "failed to load nouveau" errors on mobo, gfx card gives me a login screen.

I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?

I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

Grub boot loader was installed on my system & it works fine but now I want to uninstall debian, will it mess up my system. Than install something like Redhat or Fedora or something with a desktop environment so it feels cutting edge
I am running maverick 10.10 with ATI drivers and two monitors. When I boot up both monitors are enabled and in multidisplay mode, showing the login widget and background, but when I log in the second monitor gets disabled and I have to use the ATI control panel to reconfigure to multidisplay. Not a major issue but rather annoying. This also happened with 10.04 LTS BTW. I was hoping for better behaviour in 10.10.
Is there a way to persist the ati control panel configuration across reboot +relogin ? Why would gnome desktop startup disable multidisplay ( and where might that be configured ) ?
I can't see anything obvious in /etc/gdm for this. xorg.conf lists both monitors enabled.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to install "Wireless LAN" driver which wasn't installed by default on Debian Wheezy based on this DOC.
After I did all steps in that DOC, I've rebooted the system, and then Debian booted in TTY( gdm didn't start!!!!! )
and the main problem is I can't login to TTY and it say's "Login incorrect"!! (I'm sure the username and password is correct).
Overall :
1- GDM doesn't start
2- I can't login to TTY
I've successfully installed Debian testing (squeeze) on my old iMac G3. I didn't select a desktop environment as a preconfigured package, but only left "standard system utilities" checked.Once I rebooted, I logged in as root (on the command line) and ran "apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies gnome-icon-theme xdm", let all that pull in and installd then rebooted. As the system was booting, I could see all the services starting and whatnot, but when it gets to the line "Starting xdm..." the screen changes to black, but stays black for a good 2 minutes. I tried hitting some keys on the keyboard, as well as typingy login credentials, even though I can't see them, but nothing seems to work. I've tried rebooting several times

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?
Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?
PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]
I've used this video conferencing web app on Windows 7 and it works perfectly. [URL] But I'm having flash problems. Flash doesn't load and the light at my webcam doesn't switch on at all. Things to note:Cheese works so I know my webcam in Ubuntu is functional. I've tried purging the flash plugin and reinstalling it. It doesn't work on Chrome and Firefox so it's definitely only a flash problem. I'm not using any medication so I know it isn't me just imagining it. Using startx X loads but leaves it unusable, both mouse and keyboard don't work (I never use startx really as regular user but in root). The message is:

In my /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config I changed "allowed_users=console" to "allowed_users=anybody" and that doesn't work.

The title is rather vague because I haven't been able to identify the cause of the problem. I installed Debian Testing using the daily builds of March 6th and 7th with the same results: the system fails to load the Gnome desktop after the log in. Instead, a pale blue background is shown. No panels, no window manager, nothing. I can move the cursor but there's no context menu and the key bindings don't work, turning the session useless. The problem exists in all accounts, and persists even when the dot-files are deleted after the first Gnome start.
After trial and error, I found out that if I changed to a virtual console (VC1 to VC6) and go back to VC7 (sometimes VC8), the Gnome desktop loads as expected. The pale blue background is shown over/instead of the actual background and I need to cover ("paint") it with a window to show the actual one. This pointed me to a Gnome Session or a graphics card error. Indeed, if I disable Gnome Session, the Gnome desktop loads after the log in. Of course, no interface settings are set. I checked the Gnome Session's bug list without luck and the error messages in .xsession-errors aren't conclusive, for they appear in other cases.
About the graphics card: the video settings work (screen settings, 3D accelaration, recovery after suspend to RAM/disk) but Xorg's log shows several erros and warnings when setting up the system (mostly related to the video and touchpad settings). Right now, I'm building a custom xorg.conf file to try to decreases udev's errors and see if it affects the Gnome problem. I've spent hours trying to solve this problem. It's annoying to lose interface settings after closing the session (key bindings and brightness settings, for example).
