I have an Asus K50IJ laptop and everything works great, but now I'm moving house and need to switch to a mobile broadband dongle. From what I can tell the major providers here in the UK don't support Linux, so I'm hoping someone can help me with the question of mobile broadband on debian and what does and doesn't work by default. I'm happy to get my hands dirty and keep learning about linux and debian, but I'm definitely still a beginner in both. I couldn't find what I needed searching the man pages, wiki or forum, but point in me in the right direction if you think I've missed something useful. Ideally I'd like to use Virgin Mobile so I've asked them for specs on the dongle they supply and I'll post that info when I get it. Any help would really be appreciated as I rely on the internet pretty heavily.
1st post in Debian Forums, just came from Arch...and segmentation fault and wine are the 2 special reasons for my return, it's a great distro but i miss the stable part of the deal.I'm a performance guy and i want to know what you use for mobile broadband connection (USB Pen) with exception of course of network manager, even with 8GB of RAM to deal with i want to keep my Debian Squeeze simple, better said:netcfg / wicd for networkpptp client for vpn........ for mobile broadband
Im running Pure:Dyne, an audio-centric distro, and so far I have not been able to get my usb modem to work. Im using a Huawei EC168 and my carrier is Alltel. Im totally new to Debian as well... Im doing this off of a live disc then I plan to install it once I know Ill be able to use my internet (its my only internet...) The card doesnt seem to be recognized other than as a storage drive or something, since its preloaded with the software for windows that comes with it.
I have a new hard-drive and have installed squeeze using CD 1. As my mobile broadband is the only way I can connect to the internet, how do I get it working on a fresh install?
I am trying to tether internet from my LG Leon to a new debian 8.1 install so i can install network drivers but i keep getting disconnected. After activating the tethering, it works fine, and appears as a "wired" connection in Network, after a minute it will always change from wired to "Mobile Broadband" and asks me to select my "Network". (Then the internet doesn't work until tethering is reset.) Is there any way i can stop debian from doing this? The silly thing the internet works perfectly until it shifts it like this.
Booting debian with xfce desktop (8.2, amd64) using a live cd of iso hybrid. While a wired network can be easily connected using network manager, it fails to recognize the mobile broadband (I am using a USB dongle). The network manager gui disappears after I select `Mobile Broadband'. Moreover, Code: Select allnmcli -p con does not recognize the gsm connection, but Code: Select allnmcli dev status returns that a USB gsm connection is present at ttyUSB3.
I have a fresh install of squeeze without a desktop environment. I then installed a basic gnome environment so I can choose my own apps ('apt-get install gdm3' pulls in enough for that). I then had to install some packages to get mobile broadband working:It all works fine until I disconnect it via Gnome network manager. I cannot reconnect using Gnome network manager because it doesn't show in the menu, but it does show while I'm connected. If I pull the dongle out and plug it in again, it reconnects without issue.I think I may be missing some packages, but I don't know what. I tried usb-modeswitch, but no change
i am using samsung S3310 with aircel when i am connecting new mobile broadband connection my device is not identifying ,so that i cant connect Internet.but everything okay i mean settings in mobile and pc. for same connection i used Nokia mobile its identified and Internet was connected but samsung mobile is not identifying in terminal i typed LSUSB my device is shown in that.
1) does squeezy allows out of the box work for huwai dongle/ mobile broadband? (i never was able to configure mobile broadband in lenny thus i couldn't have kept lenny in my pc for more than 3 hours)
2) if i install squeezy (which status is 'testing' at the time being), do i need to reinstall squeezy once it becomes 'stable'?
3) any major difference between squeezy/debian and ubuntu?
I've just installed Debian 7.6.0 with KDE onto my laptop and now I want to connect to the internet with my Mobile Broadband dongle. When it's plugged in, I follow the icon in the taskbar to the Network Connections window.
Then I try to add a MBB instance with the pop-up assistant. After I've answered all the questions another pop-up tells me:-
"Insufficient privileges"
What's going wrong here and how do I get Debian to work the dongle (which works on my Desktop Debian 7.5.0 that uses Gnome)?
I have Debian Squeeze AMD64 bit release. It finds my wired ethernet connection and ues itfine, although nothing shows up in the top right corner under the networking icon.
When I plug my mobile phone in (HTC S620) it always uses this as the main internet connection and then even if disconnected wont use my wired connection until I reboot.
Is there a way to stop it doing this or at least have my wired connction as an option so I can just click to reconnect to my ethernet connection?
I installed Debian Squeeze on my Acer AspireOne yesterday, and was delighted to see that my ZTE MF627 broadband dongle (from 3 UK) appeared to work "out of the box". I wasn't able to connect due to lack of signal, but the behaviour was as I expected. (The dongle is one with a "zero CD" that needs to be ejected before the modem itself can be accessed. Recent versions of udev are supposed to do this automagically.)
However, when I tried to use the dongle today, I was unable to make it work. It appears that udev is no longer ejecting the zero CD when it is inserted, but is instead detecting the modem as a (non-functioning) serial port.
Here is the output from /var/log/syslog for the "successful" attempt. Note the disconnection at 4769.479857 which is followed by reconnection as a different device:

I have read that Ubuntu 9.10 does not support Huawei EC1260 mobile broadband dongles. As a result, I am using Ubuntu 9.04 still now. How will I use it in 9.10? Or,will it be supported in 10.04 or any other later version?
In the previous versions of Fedora, the check for updates when connected through mobile broadband appeared disabled, which made sense as I don't want updates when connected through a mobile phone but will wait until I'm connected through either ethernet or wifi.
Took my laptop into work on Friiday (9am Friday is the time concert tickets go onsale). Connected to mobile broadband using Fedora 14 and got the updates available icon, surely this shouldn't happen?
i have just recently installed linux mint 9 with the KDE desktop, i am very happy about it... the problem i have encountered is setting up my 3 Mobile broadband USB dongle, other linux distros just recognised it instantly, but i cannot seem to install it in this one, could someone help me at all, please in a simple as possible description as i am still really new to linux, its a huawei dongle
I installed fedora 15 on my PC with AMD II X2 CPU with tata photon+ connection. Internet connection working good in Ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7 on same PC. But on fedora 15 with gnome 3 its not working with same configuration?
I installed slackware on my laptop last night, :-) very happy. Can't wait to learn more about linux and even computers in general. I've already learnt heaps since entering the alternative operating system world. Anyways, i've got xfce up and running with slack now, created a new user 4 my self. And now i'd like to get some updates and stuff, but i need to use my mobile broadband. It's a telsta dongle If that changes the circumstances. How would i go about setting this up?
Im able to use nm-applet just fine to setup broadband card. Its a Sprint Sierra 598u. Im running Fedora 10 KDE version. Anyone know how to get it working? i tried the setup process but all it tells me is set up GPS or CDMA so i go CDMA for mine, but then it has some default name, and no providers, as the UBUNTU version did at least...i setup best i can but then after closing configs, i go to nm-applet icon in bottom-right and it doesn't show the mobile broadband connection, also any wireless connections don't work for some reason, but DO show up. just wont connect (which i got every so often when using ubuntu on the machine, was usually a switch off or restart away from fine
I tried at Fedora 10, didn't work, and then Ubuntu 9.0.4, in the hope of it may work, my CDMA 1x Mobile broadband.( it works well under Win XP). and it didn't work. And then it comes the Fedora 11, still the same problem.
Seems Linux cannot recoginize my CMDA 1x Mobile Bbroadband, becuase the newwork manager doesn't pop up with messages of detecting a new hardware.
And when I run the desmeg:

I'm completely lost. Thought i was'nt a newbie anymore, but obviously i am. I have a USB HSDPA modem ZTE MF628. Figured out how to change from USB CD device tot modem, but still cannot get it to work, Especially how to get it showing up in NetworkManager as a mobile broadband device. Some output (after usb_modeswitch):

i have both a vodafone and 3 mobile broadband dongles. they both work out of the box, however i am only getting gprs, while i can get 3g/hsdpa using my windows box. is there any gui configuration manager or terminal commands i can use to set it to 3g/hsdpa only? im running ubuntu 9.10.
Just loaded Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell 5100, (XP finally got the bsod) I have verizon mobile broadband, all was very good until I realized I cannot connect wirelessly. The usb modem was not recognized, there is no indication of any wireless connection. There is no icon and nothing happens when the usb modem is plugged in. I have been working on this for hrs & hrs. I am a complete novice on Linux, but CompT1 A certified on PC's
I have an USB (Huawei 1751) modem for mobile broadband. I had it up and running in Ubuntu 9.10 but I had to clear the computer for various reasons. I have decided to only use LTS versions so for the reinstall I have used Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I have downloaded and installed usb_modeswitch and can see that the modes is changed to the right value. After that I wanted to add a new mobile broadband connection in the network connections wizzard - but cannot see any settings for mobile broadband. I am sure it must be possible - but where is this function hidden in version 8.04 ?
I have just switched to Ubuntu from Win 7 RC. So far its been fun, learning to use terminal and all. But I have got a problem now I cannot find a solution to.
I am using 3 Mobile Broadband. The thing just worked - I plugged it in, created a new connection, modified config a little and was happily browsing.
However, it started acting out yesterday. When I boot the system with the modem plugged in, the USB stick is recignised and NetworkManager starts connecting (I have auto connect on). It then shows the "connected" message, and generally appears working fine.
On the other hand, I cannot open a single page in Firefox, it shows the default server not found page.
I used the approach Windows taught me: close, open, retry. I unmount the 3 Mobile Broadband drive, pull the modem out and reconnect it. NetworkManager then does it's job and this time everything works.
I nether had this problem in Win7 or Vista. It looks to me something goes wrong during the booting when the modem is plugged in.
I have bought reliance netconnect broadband+ 3.1 Mbps connection. I am provided Huawai EC1260 device to make the connection. But using ubuntu 9.1 I am not able to make the connection work. I have tested the device in windows XP and it's working fine there. I don't want to use windows and desperate to establish the connection in Ubuntu 9.1.
I decided to give 10.04 a shot, and upon first boot, I was able to setup and use my Rogers Rocket mobile broadband stick. When I rebooted, I found that it was in the network settings, but I was unable to connect, nor did it show up as an option in the drop-menu. I played with the terminal trying to see if anything was wrong, but everything seems normal, which is to say I don't even know what I'm looking for in regards to this type of connection.
I obviously know now that it works, I just don't know what made it stopped for the time being. I'm thinking of doing a fresh install over the current partition, and trying to work the issue from there.
