When I install the texlive packages (LaTeX installation) in Mint 9 (= Ubuntu 10.04), the pdflatex module is not installed. Yet it's required for producing pdf files from LaTeX editors, for example jEdit with the LaTeX Tools plug-in. pdflatex is not in the Mint/Ubuntu repos.

General :: Getting Emacs Recognizing .tex As Latex And Even Running Latex-mode?

Jul 5, 2010

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.

I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

Debian :: Using LaTeX Text In Inkscape - PyXML Import Error

May 20, 2011

I want to use LaTeX text in Inkscape. Just a simple thing like $$x_i$$. There is an extension called textext with installation manual. Basically one have to copy four files into /usr/share/inkscape/extensions and one more option appears in Extensions menu. So far so good.

If I try to use that extension I get an error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/inklatex.py", line 7, in <module>
import xml.dom.ext.reader.Sax2
ImportError: No module named ext.reader.Sax2

Googling you can find several topics about that error from 2004 or earlier saying to install PyXML and providing a link to it, where it is said "Out of date. Do not use it." I have tried to build that PyXML though -- without success (lots of compile errors).

So,no web2c/kpathsea-specific files.

General :: Using Pdflatex Into A Bash Script?

Apr 8, 2011

I am using pdflatex to generate reports from txt files, but have some doubts I can not solve by myself using the man page.Rerun pdflatex Quite often you need to rerun pdflatex, to achieve the desired result. Now, I simply do:

Code:

--bash code here---
pdflatex file.tex
pdflatex file.tex
--more bash code here--

But I am afraid this is not the right way to do it. Is there any better way to tell pdflatex to compile twice? Stop on errors While running pdflatex manually, quite often you are prompted to do something when errors occur. How to tell pdflatex to just stop and avoid being waiting for a response? Errors file I don't understand from the man page how to create an error file to debug the tex file...

Software :: Set Font Size To Times New Roman 14pt In Pdflatex?

Apr 10, 2009

I am preparing my report using pdflatex. According to the specification given, the font must be Times New Roman 14pt. I googled and found that usepackage{times} could be used. I also read in wiki books that Large will set the font size to 14pt if the default size is 11pt. But it was also given that the font size for Large may be varying according the document class. I am using document class report. I am not sure if setting Large will make the font size to 14pt. When googling I found a command fontsize. But I couldn't find proper documentation to use it. It would be great if get some information on how to set the font style and size.

Debian Installation :: Cannot Write Grub To Boot Location - Fatal Error

Jun 10, 2011

I have been following this tutorial [URL]. When I get to the end of the installation and try to install GRUB to the /boot partition I have set up it throws a fatal error at me. No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

Debian Configuration :: Hard Drive 1 Wont Load - Gives Me A Fatal Error

May 14, 2011

My problem is that my debian in hard drive 1 wont load, gives me a fatal error.

This is my computer:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian 333gb, windows7 666GB (approximately)
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Details: I tried to install some webcam software thing and I think somehow i deleted some system files... ...So now when I start my computer, grub loads and i choose Debian on hard drive 1,i click it but when it goes through the list of things, it says

FATAL ERROR /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko: No such file or directory

And it just goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Now that's not all. I did something else wrong... I ran Gparted from a usb stick to create an extra partition on hard drive 1 because i was trying to install another linux on it or something so I can access my computer.

But, when I tried to shrink it and create an extra partition on the disk of about 150gb, it was taking so long and i read that it may take about 40 hours, so i turned it off after a few hours. So, I may have created more problems than my original problem.... I can still boot into Windows 7 though.

So now i have:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian about 120gb, windows7 666gb (approximately), free partition
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Also, of interest: When I look at the folders of the messed up debian, there is nothing in the /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel folder. Empty.

So basically. my problem is that I get the fatal error, and then maybe i create some extra problem by stopping the partitioning when it wasnt done. so please help me try to fix the fatal error first

Ubuntu :: Installing Latex .sty And .cls?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm trying to install a .sty, .cls, and a .bst (bibtex) file for latex. I'm currently using texlive in Ubuntu 10.10. I have the general idea of where to install these but whenever I try to compile the .tex I get an error that says permission is denied to the .cls file, so I'm not sure what's going on.

I've ran the mktexlsr and everything else, but I still get this problem. If I run sudo pdflatex <filename> I wind up compiling a pdf document that I can't access. Not sure if I have to add permissions to the .sty and .cls files after they've been copied.

Additionally, the .sty and .cls files I'm using aren't in the official texlive distribution so I would definitely need to install them myself.

As soon as i turn the computer on, i get a grub loader screen with two options, Debian or single user debian. Both choices present same issue. Once i select either one, it seems to load then says "fatal: error inserting fan: no such device." Continues to load, and then "fatal: error inserting thermal, unknown symbol in module"Continues to load then "volume group ***** not found, volume group ***** not found" "enter pass phrase to unlock disk" I enter the pass phrase. "Successful" then a bunch of stuff loads and hangs at "end trace de8............" And it won't let me type anything or do anything except hit the power button.
