I have updated my 11.3x64 recently and after updateI cannot log into any X session.Keyboard is dead but mouse is moving fine.I tried to change kdm to gdm - no result! All I can do now is - select by mouse "Console Session"and log in to common terminal. In terminal session keyboard works.I can't understand What is it?The most interesting:If I run terminal as a root and run startx - kde desktop is started but the same way - without keyboard!Hardware manager (YAST) shows: /dev/input/event0and shows type of keyboard right: AT Keyboard bla-bla-bla. (Common Genius PS/2 keyboard for 6$ :-))I suspect something wrong with my X11 but can't get what!I did not find xorg.conf in it's standard place. I have found only /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install

Debian :: Getting List Of Installed Packages From A Dead System?

May 31, 2010

I have a dead system that was running Debian Linux (lenny). I can boot into emergency mode, but nothing else. I will likely have to reinstall Debian. I've read lots of things online about how to get a list of currently installed packages. Which is fine and dandy if the system is working and I can log into it. I'm basically wanting to extract such a list from a hard drive containing an installation I can't log into normally. I can access the filesystem just fine, and nothing related to aptitude has been damaged.

General :: Change Icon In KDE4

Oct 14, 2010

I recently installed Kubuntu 10.4 (running KDE 4.4.2) on a new laptop. All of the important stuff is working fine and I'm now on to the tweaks. To that end: does anyone know how to change individual application icons? I installed a new icon theme from kde-look, but many of the icons either did not change (a.) or are just ugly and I'd like to be able to change them manually (b.)

When I right-click an icon, I have the option of clicking "icon settings," but there is no option to change the icon from there. In earlier versions of KDE, I could just click the icon itself and it would bring up all of the available icons. Is this a permissions issue? If so, what do I change to be able to edit the icons?

Software :: Cannot Change ZumoDrive Folder Icon On KDE4 Desktop

Apr 8, 2011

A couple of days ago I set up an account with ZumoDrive to sync folders between my Fedora 14 desktop and my MS Vista laptop. I chose ZumoDrive instead of Dropbox or Ubuntu1 because it is 'integrated' with Yahoo which I use a lot.Everything works perfectly apart from one minor irritation. I cannot change the ZumoDrive folder icon on my KDE4 desktop. ZumoDrive is actually designed for use with Nautilus but it works fine with Dolphin, apart from the icon issue.

I can change the icon in Nautilus but when I try to do in in KDE/Dolphin I get:"Could not save properties. You do not have sufficient access to write to /home/david/ZumoDrive/.directory."I am the 'owner' of the drive and i have also tried as root but the result was the same.

Debian Configuration :: Klipper Icon Has Disappeared From The System Tray

Jul 2, 2010

I'm running squeeze. The klipper icon has disappeared from the system tray and I can't figure out how to restore it. The service is running. Stopping and starting it has no effect. Changing the display options for the system tray has no effect. I can bring the klipper dialog up with Ctrl-Alt-V but there are no options available regarding the system tray.

It's obviously a user configuration issue since if I login as root the klipper icon is displayed. I tried to copy the klipper configuration file contents from root to user, but that also had no effect, except to alter some non-relevant options. I haven't been able to locate any other configuration files that might be relevant. This seems to be a not uncommon problem with klipper, but the causes seem to differ. I haven't found any solutions vi Google.

Fedora :: Data Recovery From Drive On Dead FC4 System

Jun 26, 2009

I have Fedora Core 4 PPTP server (poptop) that died (motherboard). I am setting up a replacement system but need to get the data off of the drive from the dead FC4 system. They are just plain text config files. So I removed the drive and mounted it to another system using a USB enclosure. But I can't mount of the root partition, only the boot partition. I have done some Googling and see that the reason is that the / partition is an LVM format. But of course the replacement system already has a /dev/logvol..... type of partition defined. So how can I mount the LVM partition from the dead system on the new system to get the data? Understanding this will be valuable for similar situations in the future.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Crippled (no Input) Totally Dead

Mar 20, 2010

OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64
Kernel 2.6.33-34.1(from Kernel:HEAD repo)
KDE 4.4.1

Did the daily set of updates today, which included the kernel, but that update only had to do with enabling IPV6 on all flavors of the kernel. The update also included updates to the xorg packages from the X11:XOrg repo. However I was prompted that a requirement couldn't be met and one of the options was to downgrade xorg-x11-driver-input to the previous revision (not previous version). I thought that wouldn't matter so I did it.

I reboot and I am able to choose the kernel I want in the grub boot screen, get to the KDM login screen, however, after that the input is totally dead! Mouse and keyboard don't work whatsoever. I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave mouse (LX8) & keyboard so I tried it with a standard PS/2 wired mouse & keyboard but it produced the same exact problem.

Slackware :: KDE4 - X Won't Start On System

Jan 3, 2010

I did a clean install, and so far I haven't noticed any serious problems with KDE4, although I can't find what I'm looking for, usually. I don't use my laptop much though. I also did a clean install on another system to 13.0 about the same time. X won't start on that system, it can't figure out the hardware I guess.

So I've just been using the command line. I don't really need a graphical interface on that system anyway. Right now I'm using the motherboard graphics support, but I will probably install a video card in a PCI-E slot and try X again. The system that I just upgraded from 12.2 (LUKS encrypted volumes and LVM) to 13.0 tonight has a number of problems. This was an upgrade, not a clean install. Based on my experience so far on this system, KDE4 does not seem to be ready for prime time. It is buggy, the menu system is more difficult to navigate than KDE3, and there are some apps I just can't find (e.g., Kedit). Overall it seems to have fewer apps than KDE3. Either that or they are well hidden well enough that I can't find them. My first impression was that KDE4 had clean lines and a modern appearance.......

Debian Hardware :: Usb Ports Dead Or Just Not Responding?

Jun 2, 2015

I thought it was just the usb printer, but now I've found my mp3 player and my usb floppy drive aren't working, either. All of these items used to work fine a few months back; now when I plug them into a usb port, the computer doesn't recognize the player, the drive or the printer. The hp website says my printer, an HP Deskjet 1010, is fully functional under Debian 8. I just did a re-install of debian Jessie stable a few days ago, but that didn't work either. I'm running Windowmaker, with pcmanfm, and a few dockapps.

When I ran the program usb-view, I got this error message:

Can not open the file /sys/kernel/debug/usb/device. Verify that you have USB compiled into your kernel, have the USB core modules loaded, and have the usbdevfs filesystem mounted.

Shouldn't usb already be installed? I used jessie netinstal;I've used netinstall before and had no problem accessing any usb devices. When I installed a few days ago, I noticed xorg did load the wacom driver for my wacom tablet plugged in, and the mp3 player says its connected, even though it doesn't show up in pcmanfm. Plus a usb external fan runs fine.

Debian Multimedia :: No Sound From ALSA - Softmodem Dead Too

Dec 17, 2010

In the process of trying to get the softmodem working, I finally attached speakers to this laptop and tried to play some sounds. Nothing but silence. Both the KDE system sounds and a stand-alone player (noatun) produce nothing. No error messages that I can find, either. (That might explain why the softmodem is dead, too...) I've run alsaconf several times, and even uninstalled and reinstalled ALSA. It thinks it is working, but is not. What sorts of things do I need to check to find where it isn't working?

Info: The motherboard is a FIC 3500W with the VIA P4M800 integrated chipset. This includes the VIA 8237 sound system, which is what ALSA detects and tries to use. The machine also has a Realtek ALC655 but I don't see any drivers for that in the lsmod output, so this is a possible source of the trouble.

Debian :: How To Install KDE4 On Sid And Not Plasma5

Jul 23, 2015

As usual when I want to install sid, I downloaded the "mini.iso" image and proceeded with the installation of sid, without problems. However, when rebooted I noticed SDDM was in place instead of KDM; I readly knew plasma5 was installed.

No messages appeared when I selected "KDE" from the installation process, nor there was a "plasma" name there. So can I install KDE4 desktop instead of plasma 5, using the mini.iso? (I don't like upgrades so telling me to upgrade from stable -> testing -> sid will be useless).

Debian Installation :: Dell Latitude D820 'dead' On Squeeze Upgrade?

Feb 8, 2011

My Dell Latitude D820 had lenny installed and working fine. I did not have anything exotic installed (other than perhaps nividia drivers). I went about upgrading to squeeze following the notes/documentation on the debian web site. During this process it mentioned that the following firmware was not going to be installed (as it is not freeware; BTW I had non-free in my sources.list):

tigon/tg3_tso5.bin
tigon/tg3_tso.bin
tigon/tg3.bin

On reboot it was clear that the new kernel was not in a healthy state. Even when booting with older kernels I had serious stability issues. After about half a dozen reboots trying to resolve problems I was experiencing the laptop would not even load the Dell splash screen on power up. I could not even navigate into the BIOS. Nothing appeared on the monitor (or external monitor).

I put an ISO disk in the DVD drive to see if it would boot from the DVD; it seems to load but absolutely nothing appeared on the screen. I tried navigating the grub menu (not displayed) and load my windows partition. When it booted to the point where windows would normally display the GUI it flashed several times and displayed a 'BSOD' with the following message:

*** Hardware Malfunction.
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

It looks like my laptop is now FUBAR. It is out of warranty so any fix is likely to be DIY. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Debian Configuration :: KDE4 - How To Create VPN Connection

Nov 4, 2010

Alright, I was playing with the VPN capabilities in KDE4 on Squeeze AMD64 on my personal laptop (see my signature) and found it very easy to create a VPN connection and connect, but that's it. I made a VPN tunnel to one of my client locations as a test, but could use rdesktop to get into the server. Then I realized I couldn't ping the server either. I also lost all ability to browse the web and everything while the VPN was up. Upon checking ifconfig as root, I saw that it created "ppp0" and hat it had pulled an IP from the client network, but all of my networking capabilities were gone. What gives? What is it that I am missing?
