So I tried installing ubuntu on a blank partition on my mac. Everything went well, but then it said it was going to reboot. On startup, it went straight to a white screen. I tried holding down the alt button but I got no luck.
View 3 RepliesI'm installing Koala here on a 250gb Sata drive. I am looking to dual boot with Win7. I've got a 80gb Win7 partition and the rest is unallocated so I can install Ubuntu on to it. If I try to install, I get to the manual partition screen and it's blank. From what I can tell, Ubuntu isn't recognizing my hard drive at all. When I boot into the liveCD and run gparted, it says no devices found. Also when I boot gparted from a cd I get the same thing. BIOS sees the drive fine and the drive boots into Windows fine.
When I run "sudo fdisk -l" I get nothing. I've tried several of the flags including all-generic-ide. Also tried removing dmraid.
I have only used Windows. Yeaterday, i decided to try Ubuntu 10,04, since I've heard so much great about it. My problem is, when I am supposed to choose which partition to inastall on, the list is blank! it shows nothing at all... the frames and all are there, but no drives to choose from.
I'm installing from DVD with .ISO file.
My Hardware:
AMD Athlon xp 2400+ 2,00 Ghz
1,25GB RAM
Current OS: Win XP
how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.
I have an system that d8.2 appears to install correctly. On first (or subsequent) boot, I get the DB8 load screen, then a quick fsck, then nothing. I appear to have some sort of environment running as I can move a mouse pointer, but nothing else.
CTRL-ALT-F2 results in the mouse pointer vanishing, but nothing else. I expected to end up at the CLI.
I have tried different installs and options, always the same result. This machine ran an earlier version with issues.
I am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition.These are my hard drive partitions:

The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause?Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.
I have just installed Debian 7.8.0 powerpc on my imac G3 (400Mhz, 256Mb Ram). I had repartitioned the drive with the view of having a dual boot machine, had OS9 installed on partition 1, linux installed on partition 2 and a ext4 data partition and a 1Gb swap partition. After I installed OS9, I ran Debian Installation CD and was successfully installed. Rebooted, got through the on screen text past file system check, then screen went blank. I searched Google and forund that if I ran ctrl+alt+f1 and logged in, then ran lspci, I could get the ID of the graphics. So I did, and:

It seems I am having the same problem, but on a Toughbook CF-28. I tried searching the forum for a solution, and Google, but to no avail. Here is the run down:Installed Debian 6.0 from the NetInst (i386) CD, and all went well. Re-started the laptop, and all booted up fine (got the code lines). When the login screen should appear, all I get ilackscreen.CF-28 Hardware:RAM: 512MB. CPU: Pentium III Mobile 800 MHz (Im guessing from Google) Searches) Not sure what else it has, no information came with the laptop. I do know it has an ethernet port, which worked durininstall, has no wireless, does have a touch screen.I apologize for my noobness, but I am uber new to Linux. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed Debian squeeze on my old Dell Latitude C600 laptop. I Installed it from a cd that worked to a friend of mine. I finished the installation successfully. After booting the computer I can get to the grub screen and after choosing the OS (Debian GNU/LINUX, with linx 2.6.32-5-686) I see the computer loading and running command lines, but after few lines, I get black screen and I hear the computer "working" but can't see anything and it doesn't react to anything that I do.

But, when I installed it, the reboot is just a blank screen. I am not sure how I can proceed from now.

I've had Windows XP Home installed on my netbook (Toshiba NB205) and I've just tried to install squeeze via net install. In particular, I installed grub. Everything seemed to go ok during the installation, but when I boot up, all that appears is a blank screen with nothing but at "j" and a cursor. One thing I can think of that might offer a clue, is that when asked to installed grub, the installer said it recognized two operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP Home, and Windows NT/XP. The latter is not really an operating system, but the backup partition.
I don't know how this might affect grub's functioning. What does this "j" mean? Looking at this: [URL]. Could this have some thing to do with boot flag? Should I switch it to my NTFS partition instead of my root partition? Doing that at least let's me boot into Windows. But that's not what I want. I've never dual booted before. So I booted back up with my USB, intending to reinstall Debian, and it loaded grub instead. So apparently grub is now on my USB. Then it booted me into Debian.
I had ubuntu studio installed ( for the record I hated it and every ubuntu flavor I have ever used. ) After backing off all the stuff from my home dir I started to install testing from a dvd. ( Is there a net install for testing? I couldn't find it) Don't ask me how it happened but some times I would have two grub graphical boot menus. One would chain to the other. I suspect that happened from one of the very friendly updates ubuntu did. Well when I tried to install testing I got a red screen telling me that grub wouldn't install so I tried lilo. Well it wouldn't install either. Back in the old days when I was a slackware guy installing from a stack of floppies I had a trick to wipe out any boot loaders or other stuff that gave me a problem. I would dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<drive info such as hda with no partition number> .
This would write zeros over the drive and it would look like a new drive. So I did this trick. But still no joy ( this is a clue, dd was also thinking that the beginning of the drive was after the boot sector.). I suspected that the installer wasn't doing it's job right. So I got a PCLinuxOs disk and started that installer. The PCLinuOS installer has a cutesy visual bar that shows the partitions. Well sure enough the boot sector showed as blank. This was what the Debian installer had done. It left the boot sector blank and tried to install the boot loader right after it. This won't work. Now I consider when some version of Linux falls on it's face and another version does it right that the version that fell on it's face has a problem.
One might even call it a bug. But I don't know what to do about it. I don't think the problem is with grub or the installer itself. I think how the drive was looked at was faulty. That's why dd didn't blankout the boot sector. So what do I do to help get the Deb people to fix this? The more I think about it the more I think the problem is with udev ( what a surprise) I think this because I suspect dd looks to the info set out by udev to find the beginning of the drive.
After installing debian squeeze I tried installing a nvidia driver. I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.

At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I'm creating a new debian virtual machine. As virtual disks are free, I want to use tree for my new machine. The scheme will be like this:
sda -> /boot
sdb -> /root
sdc -> swap
Installing Debian on a new laptop and read that Debian-Installer (DI) can create an encrypted partition (/home) during installation.However, when I went through installation and started the manual partitioning (standard, non-lvm) , I am unable to locate the encryption option.

During the installation process i got a message saying No EFI Partition was found. I could not do anything about it so i ignored it, completed the installation and now when i start the computer it just goes straight to Windows 8.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have now tried twice, with the same results, to install Debian 8.2.0 onto my hard drive. Each time it went through the installation as if everything was working. But, when it rebooted, it came up in grub rescue mode. When I do an "ls" command, it only shows the hard drive and no partition information. When I do an "ls (ho0,1)" it reports no such partition.
When is my installation failing? Why is it not partitioning the hard drive and loading the OS? Obviously it can write to the disk or else grub wouldn't come up at boot.

What is the recommended procedure to clone i.e. /dev/mdx (/usr) partition to a greater one, say /dev/mdy, to accommodate for growth, whilst preserving attributes including timestamps (and yes, that means also including ctime).All of # cp -ax SOURCE DEST, # rsync -ax SOURCE DEST and # cpio modify ctime.Some sites recommend dd, i.e.:

Install is fine. but during install it didnt see my 1tb raid1 drive..
after reboot, debain boots great, and i can mount the raid drive in the file manager.
I can see it and in mtab it shows up :

I'm trying to install debian on a encrypted partition with LUKS and LVM. I've found a good tutorial for ubuntu (here but it's in french). The idea is to create a sda1 partition for /boot and create a sda2 partition which is encrypted with luks ("cryptsetup -c aes-xts-plain -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sda2") and on this encrypted partition, I use LVM to divide it in several different partitions (root, swap, home,...).
I can do it all with the debian live cd but once it's done I need to install debian. The problem is that with the basic install cd (I use netinstall), I cannot decrypt the partition for the installation (or if I can how ?)And with the live cd, I didn't find any option to do that.
My hard drive is partitioned fairly simply, with two primary partitions, one for Windows and one for Debian Squeeze.How can I remove sda1 and make it so that Debian takes up the whole disk on one large partition without reinstalling?I have downloaded and burnt the gparted live cd, but I daren't go any further without some hand holding.

I am trying to replace an existing ubuntu installation with the current debian testing release. But when it comes to select partitions to install on none of the existing partitions is visible. I only see my SATA hard drive empty. The existing installation of Windows is still bootable and fdisk as well as cfdisk correctly recognize the partition table while parted (which I assume is used by the installation process; all tools run from a live cd) is not:

I am not sure what parted's error message means. I can hardly imagine that it complains about the logical partitions with in the extended one. The reasons for the trouble might come frome the fact that sda4 is marked as primary partition (see cfdisk output). If this is the case, how can I repair this?
I am preparing a dual boot system. Used gparted to do the partitioning. Unfortunately did not notice that one can choose to align on MB (default) or cyl (probably preferable) Now my setup is running ok but fdisk reports warnings like Partition 4 not on cylinder boundary
Looking up the net I see two conflicting views on this:
1. Forget it -- cylinders are not relevant on today's disks
2. For linux this is ok but windows may clobber the adjacent partition in such a 'non-aligned' partition
The real problem is that parted, gparted, fdisk etc are mutually inconsistent in what kind of partition table is 'good' and I dont know who to believe
I am trying To install debian 6 with xp in dual boot after a crash during update version 10.10 to 11.04 (not enought space but no information about that ....so it's moment for change something ..) so i found unetbootin like the more simple way for my "ecodieselesecondhanddust pc" with download only iso image : debian-6.0.1a-i386-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso without use any bash command ... after launch the usb key everything work well , except during the manual partition where i want use xp partition (ntfs) and not others choices proposed like fat ,btrfs,jfs,xfs,ex2,3 or 4..! how i can use NTFS choice and to be sure to not delete my xp partition with an other choice not appopriate to ntfs ? it's seems to add a kernel module with modprobe in bash , but i have not idea with which option exactly ?

When I removed the old debian and started the installation of the new version, the encrypted partition could not be used to install, and the drive itself was creating an error message when I tried to mount the installation there. This is probably a vague explanation of what is happening, but does anyone know how to remove these encrypted LVM partitions?

Then using this boot to the installer and install to the first partition.The answer for why I want to try this is that I have a computer that runs a robot that needs Debian. There is no CD, USB, or internet currently on the drive. there is an Ethernet plug, but It won't work until the OS is in place. We tried taking the hard drive and installing Debian to it from a USB stick on another computer, but it has the wrong Ethernet drivers and we can't get it to talk to the internet on the robot's computer.
Everything else is fine, but with out an internet connection the robot will not work.If your interested the board is an old Versalogic VSBC-8 and the robot is a Pioneer 1 from Mobile robotics. The hard drive (not that it matters) is a standard 80GB IDE notebook drive from Western Digital.
