Debian :: Apt-get Updates Waste Time Requiring Re-scanning Dvds
Mar 6, 2011
I have the eight Debian dvds listed in my sources.list, along with security, nonfree, and multimedia repositories. It does this for all eight dvds, re-scanning them for the update. These dvds have already been scanned (from the apt-cdrom add command). New updates are NOT going to suddenly appear on these already scanned dvds, so this is a completely unnecessary endeavour. Is there a way to stop this?It didn't happen with Lenny, and I'd like to stop it with Squeeze.

Old? They've been around for a while and I wonder if they're still relevant. The following:
Code:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
network.http.proxy.pipelining
And adding a new integer
Code:
nglayout.initialpaint.delay
Still relevant with the recent versions of Firefox or a waste of time?

The last few bugs I have reported on launchpad have met the response "submit it upstream". What's the point of submitting bugs on launchpad if the bug has to be reported again upstream anyway? Why not just report upstream in the first place and forget launchpad?
It seems like unnecessary duplication of effort. So can anyone give me some genuine reasons to bother reporting in launchpad?

I am building a PC that dual boots Kubuntu and Windows and want to share the email store. Therefore, I would like to have real time or on access scanning of emails in an antivirus program like Windows does. I am not running an email server, just a desktop using pop3 and eventually imap email.
In previous Debian versions ClamAV and Dazuko used to do this. However, I understand that this setup doesn't work in Lucid. I tried p3scan but that hasn't been updated since 2008, once I managed to install it, it failed to find clamd even though it was running. I understand that clamdrib no longer works for Thunderbird 3. Amavisd as a replacement for p3scan, but this seems to be for mail servers.
I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me how to get on access/real time virus scanning of pop3 and imap emails on a desktop running Lucid with either Thunderbird 3 or Kmail, without having to buy an antivirus program like Avast Or point me to an existing tutorial that I might have missed.
As an aside (don't want much do I?) does anyone know if Kmail can be setup to only download the headers like Thunderbird does?

I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

I've installed it properly until it works now, it does send emails and receive them, but heres the problem.
1) it does not send emails to a certain domain, unless i do dpkg-reconfigure on exim4 and put the domain on allowed relay... can't i just put something on settings which allow to send emails to ALL domains?
2) EVERYONE can connect to the server by telnet from any position, terminal or pc, and just use an existing user to send emails to anyone.... example, i have testuser123 setted up in debian/exim4 .. then they simply write "mail from:testuser123@host.dot" and the server accepts it.. without even request an authentication for that. And this is a problem, because everyone can use my email addresses to send emails to whoever.. heaven for spammers/hackers..

I ve noticed that iceweasel (3.5.13) is slow in some java requiring websites: showcase: [URL] then add in the field location more than two locations (3=max i think). notice the slughiness if not the IW rash. Trying the same with epiphany (2.30.6) is (much) bettereventhough the cpu usage is also getting high System: Linux debian 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Tue Oct 19 14:40:34 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux at Gnome Desktop

Alright, I'm trying to use KMyFirewall on Squeeze and it doesn't do anything. Whenever I do something that's supposed to require root access, it does not prompt me for the root password and as such, it doesn't work. For example, I setup a basic firewall that only accepts established and related connections coming in, and cannot run it due to the "iptables" command requiring root. This means that when I press the button to run the firewall (not install, run) nothing happens.
I believe this is related to the bonehead move to remove or cripple kdesu in Squeeze and/or KDE4. Is this the case or is something else wrong here? I would like to run a personal firewall on my laptop without spending a day and a half writing rules by hand. I'd also like to quickly poke holes in it for applications when needed, so please don't say something stupid about doing it by hand. I'm looking for help with a program that appears broken in the stable release.

I'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.

My Internet service provider here in South Africa is Vodacom (Vodafone) and I pay a huge amount of cash for 2.5Gigs per month. They do, however, give me the same amount of data for free that I can make use of between midnight and 5.00am.For this reason, I would like to be able to schedule my update manager to download all updates at, say, 10 past midnight. Can any of you guys out there offer any suggestions or is there a way that we can make a request for the Ubuntu developers to include this in "Update Manager"?

I have just made a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and after installing all updates, GDM is taking a long time (about one minute) to come up after a clean boot, resulting in a regular console prompt.
If I issue "sudo service gdm start" it does come up promptly.
What can I do? Where can I see startup logs to try and identify any problems?

I got a message today telling me that there where 78 updates available. One of them was Kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i586 and when I installed all the updates and rebooted, my startup time was very slow. And when I checked the boot.log I noticed this:
Code:
Enabling the nvidia driver: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/python: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00f0e24a ***

I have Ubuntu running as a Virtualbox, and every time it upgrades the kernel, the Guest Additions stop working. The install process in Linux requires using a virtual CD, running scripts from the command line, etc.Is there any way to keep the guest additions constantly working even when the kernel is upgraded? Can they be installed as Ubuntu packages instead of installing off the virtual CD?

I've been quite puzzled by the behavior of unattended updates - it seems it runs the updates at or before 7am (on all the server installs I've got). They are only set to do security updates unattended, but what I am wondering is if there is a way to change the time that they install? I want the updates to install early in the morning, at like 3am or such, so I can reboot the machine when I get up if needs a reboot.I found a few mentions about it, but nothing specifically talking about the time.[URL]..

I want to have a terminal open and have something like a "repeating cat" command running in it for a certain text file (in particular /var/log/system.log). So my terminal will scan or cat the text file every so often or whenever the text file system.log gets written to by the system, it will display whatever it wrote to the file in my terminal that is open.

I have not been able to write to DVDs since the install except for once when luck seemed to play more a part than anything else. Does anyone have a fix for this?Well, after letting it sit and sit and sit, it looks like it does write the data. But, it's writing about 1/2 of a DVD for just 2 500K files.

I note that if I delete folders or files on this NTFS partition there is not the option to move to waste basket - it is just deleted. If the folder still exists on the hard drive (has not been over written) I may be able to retrieve it - but where could it be? On the NTFS partition?

I did a minimal install of Debian 8. When I 'apt-get install' some packages, like xen, it'll look on DVD 1 and then say not found. How do I get it to look on other disks too?
ETA: I have to install from disk, there is no Internet access for this host.

At the Debian download web page, there are many choices for an installation CD. There also is a 4 DVD set. I presume the CD is to get a base system installed. I presume the 4 DVD set is the whole ball of wax.
Yet presumptions are not always a good thing. So I would appreciate an explanation about the difference between the two options or just point my nose to the appropriate link. I browsed the Debian online docs, but I did not find an explanation. I am getting older too, so perhaps I saw the explanation and clicked right on by.
