Nov 12, 2014
I'm using Debian Wheezy last version with OpenBox (without Gnome) and i would like to start alsamixer to change the volume but, look what happens in my terminal, I'm using terminator:
rob@robgeek:~$ alsamixer
Error opening terminal: terminator.

In a desperate attempt to overcome frequent crashing accompanied by XLog lines that suggest to me that Pulseaudio is the cause, I removed Pulsaudio from my Ubuntu 10.4(LTS) using Software Centre. Now I cannot start up Ubuntu but I can get to Terminal via the Recovery Mode. My question is how can I use Terminal to re-introduce Pulseaudio so that I may get back to where I was, albeit with the random crashes that I have had for many months?

Recently I've updated from 13 to 14. However, after updated I've tried to work with my terminal and it seems doesn't works fine. I can read 'starting terminal' but after that it's closed.I've uninstalled and re-installed it through the graphical tools (gnome-terminal) but that doesn't works fine.

My probelem is with alsamixer. I can't record anything; nothing I play back hasany sound. I have alsamixer capture set on mix. I know I recordedin the past with this setting, so I don't know what is happening. I amrecording from the internet. When I adjust the volume on playback in either alsamixer or kmix thevolume settings change on the other as well. when I adjust thevolume setting in capture it doesn't affect each other. If I have Kmix > inpur > capture enabled I can record, but the playbackdoesn't sound good. I would like to figure what is wrong with alsamixer.

I can't believe I'm still struggling with this sound problem. But I haven't given up and have no reason to do so. So I been playing around with alsamixer and noticed that everything had a option except the PCM section. See here for pic... So if anyone has any solutions to add to my hunt to fix this.

Alsamixer is better now since one can press F6 to select the card and tune it. but well, ok, when one has several cards, if you have a mic, alsamixer is not bright and select it as first card, so one resutls into no sounds.OK, alsamixer is nice, but man, how to select a specific card and select it as defautl. Then at reboot, I wish to have sound. Is that possible with Linux or shall we wait a stable version of Debian whcih works, simply ?

I've got a Toshiba L650, Debian testing/unstable, KDE4.4.5. The sound worked when I first installed everything (played a movie in dragon player, etc), but shortly thereafter it stopped working. It seems like the hardware is okay (all hardware is recognized, all relevant modules loaded, volume in alsamixer at 100%, the system beep -- set in the BIOS -- works), but I still can't get sound to play. Once or twice, right before KDE shutdown, I could hear the exit sound, but that's it. Last night I exited KDE (without hearing a sound), shutdown kdm, then:
mv $HOME $HOME.backup
mkdir $HOME
and restarted kdm and kde...still no sound! I created another user, and still no sound!

How can I know the display resolution (e.g. 1280x1024 px) without starting X?I mean: let us suppose that /etc/X11 was renamed to /etc/x11. After reboot Debian starts in text mode only.

For some reason my gnome-terminal is starting in / when it should be ~ I have checked /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and /etc/passwd and everything seems fine as far as i can tell Konsole and xterm are starting up with the working dir to my home dir (as set by /etc/passwd) But im at a loss to see where gnome-terminal is starting in / if i enter cd with no argumants in gnome-terminal it is switching to ~ fine, so i dont think its mistaking my home dir for /

My terminal text is unreadable. Where as the default output would usually fill half the screen it probably fills around 1/20th now. Basically it looks like the text is 1px in size. I was about to install a graphics driver (nvidia) but doh I can't see what I'm typing... I can't start gdm even after memorising the process of logging in and starting gdm (I think gdm is failing to start anyway) I'm using the default xorg.conf provided with the LiveCD;
[Code]....

At 50% exactly, the installer stops at this point. If I press Alt+F4, the last line states "partman-lvm: No volume groups found". I've tried the full CD install and netinstall. Both the same error. This notebook (a Dell Inspiron z11) i bought it from a friend and he had previously installed Ubuntu on it (he actually had aual boot with Ubuntu and M$.Win.7)When he asked me if I wanted the notebook like that I told him to format the whole HDD so I could install Debian from scratch. So i thought "Maybe my friend screwed up" So I boot up with GParted and reformatted the whole drive on Fat32.
Went back to boot with the netinstall, and got the exact same error. So, after that, I boot my bro's desktop with a Live Ubuntu CD to make the bootable USB (previous attempts were made on M$.Win). So, with this USB made on Ubuntu, guess what? Yes, sir, I got the very same error. I tried to install Ubuntu with the same USB (every time reformatting the USB before making it bootable) and the installation stops after i select the key map. I press quit, and it sends me to the Live version, no problems at all (except that it does not accept the password for my wireless network) Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I've used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.1, tuxboot-windows-25 and unetbootin-win-549 to make the USB bootable with the Debian netinstall, all with the same results.

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.
No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.
This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

I have an on mobo sound 'card' with an ordinary stereo jack that I use, but one of my graphics cards (Raedon) also has sound built into it. I don't use that, because the connector is some new thingie that I don't need or want.
Anyway, every other distro sees the two sound devices and automaticaly picks the right one and uses it with no trouble. (One distro, can't remember if it was fedora ... asked me to pick the device I wanted, but there was no trouble after that). It seems that with Slack, alsaconf, tho it lets me pick the right card, doesn't send that choice to alsamixer, so that the latter tries to unmute the wrong card.
'alsamixer -c 1'
fixes everything. This looks like a bug to me, but it also looks like it would be very easy to fix by just telling alsaconf to tell alsamixer which card to unmute, as seems to be done in other distros.

I just installed debian 8.0.0..I installed it without "desktop-environment" during tasksel, but instead installed it with "sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core" atferwards.I want x-win to be present but I do not want it to start during boot.
Adding "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text" to the grub config used to work but for this new debian it does not change anything. Yes, I did do update-grub2 after editing the grub file, and I also confirmed in /var/log/messages that "text" is present with the kernel command. "sudo update-rc.d gdm3 remove" also has no effect, what I do gnome starts at boot time.

I have installed Debian 5.0.4 on a 600Mhz iMac G3. When booting the usual text scrolls down the screen and then the screen goes blank. Cont-Opt-F1 gives me a terminal window. X is apparently configured and running since 'startx' returns the usual something about -1 error message. I am newly returned to the terminal window after years of GUI slackitude and I am not able to get either GNOME or KDE to come up. Is there some file I should be editing (sudo nano /fixthisthing) I feel like I am swimming in the right ocean, I just haven't spotted the island yet. The learning curve on Linux is pretty steep but I have managed to make the password deal quit making me change passwords at every, single, solitary, login, so I am not a total feeb. Some hints on navigating the file system wouldn't hurt either.

Each time I boot into Ubuntu I have to mute the External Speaker within Alsamixer GUI in order to get sound.I have made several attempts to save this setting but without success
Also read numerous threads and google search tips but no matter what I try it still results in having to open Alsamixer and manually mute the setting each time I launch Ubuntu.

After installing and configuring splashy, my system doesn't start. There appears the image of the theme I selected with splashy (which is the debian logo and a loading bar), but the bar doesn't load and it appears for just a second and then there's a black screen. When pressing F2 for text mode, it just stays at *Starting Boot splash manager splashy and nothing happens
BTW I use grub2 what can I do? should I edit /boot/grub/grub.conf? (I supose the file is there, isn't it?)
I thought i would be able to access and modify the files on my system with an ubuntu live cd, but I couldn't, is there another way to access the grub files to modify them if I can't boot debian? (and I don't have another OS installed)
