Debian Hardware :: USB Mouse Freezes On Battery

Apr 21, 2013

I have Evoluent Vertical Mouse connected via USB. It would work fine connected to my laptop on AC power, but it would freeze when on battery.I have "laptop-mode-tools" installed, and I traced this problem to laptop-mode-tools trying to put the mouse to sleep and not waking it up.To solve this, I have blacklisted the power management for the USB mouse. First, I did "lsusb" to find the mouse device:

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 1a7c:0068 Evoluent VerticalMouse 3..And got the ID of the device. Then I edited the laptop mode configuration and added this id to the blacklist:

/etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf

edit this line:

AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST="1a7c:0068"

Debian Configuration :: Battery Drain And Xsane Freezes

Apr 7, 2016

After a successful install of the MFC-J4420DW printer and scanner using Brother's install utility, I am experience severe battery drain and xsane freezes (total system lockup, requiring using CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ keyboard command REISUB or hard reset).

The Brother support page and utility/drivers are found here: URl....My laptop is the HP Elitebook 8540W and I am running Debian 8 using LVM, separate partitions for /home, /var, /temp, /swap, and /. I have looked at logs in /var/log. kern.log, daemon.log, messages and dmesg, but have not found any relevant info ...

I purged all drivers/packages and tried a manual install using each deb package, but ran into some permission errors, so I purged again. I also purged xsane and reinstalled it, then did a complete printer reinstall using the brother Driver Install Tool. The tool works great, full functionality for the MFC-J4420DW. But I know I can't live with the power drain, and I would really prefer to use Gimp and the xsane plugin rather than simple scan ..

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard And Mouse Or Maybe Screen - Freezes

Mar 29, 2010

So it's a beautiful day and I'll be happily using my computer when I realise that the screen is no longer showing that I'm typing or moving my mouse (or finger across a touch-pad). I can leave my computer in this frozen/crashed state for hours. My only recourse is to drain the battery or hold down the power button until the computer shuts down. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop/notebook. As my memory serves, it has an ATI graphics thingy. Radeon 1400, maybe. But I've had the computer for years and this behaviour has emerged only the past couple of months, with seemingly increasing frequency.

The OS is
# uname -a
Linux polaris 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 22:40:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(aka Squeeze?)

Sometimes this happens within minutes of turning the computer on and logging into Gnome. Sometimes this happens only hours after I've started using the computer (mainly just surfing the web). Sometimes it is preceded by a loud boop sound and the following if I have console open, sometimes not. So maybe that's unrelated. But that happened just now so I thought I'd throw it in.

One weird thing: Usually this happens within an hour of starting to use the computer, but one occasion I noticed I had not had the problem for several hours. On that occasion, the only thing I noticed I was doing that was also unusual: I had turned on and forgotten about a kvm virtual machine. After I shut down the vm, I had about only a minute before the freeze. I'm surprised now that it hasn't frozen since I started typing thing. Maybe I should always keep this forum open in a browser window.

Debian :: Desktop Freezes Randomly And Does Not Respond To Keyboard Or Mouse

Feb 21, 2015

I am using Debian with a gnome desktop.

Code: Select alluname -a
returns
Code: Select allLinux app-server 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My desktop sometimes freezes and does not respond to keyboard or mouse. I initially thought the CPU was overheating but it froze tonight when my CPU temperature was 32C and it has been up to 50C without freezing. I am beginning to think it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue but do not know. I looked at the pm-powersave.log and user.log but did not see anything suspicious.

Debian Hardware :: Lower Laptop Battery Charging State To Prolong Battery Life

Mar 2, 2010

getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery. So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.

Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.

I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Freezes When Using Wireless On Battery?

Nov 28, 2010

Unlike a lot of others, I have had no problems getting the wireless on my Dell Studio 1558 working with the STA driver. As long, as I am not on battery, that is. Within minutes of switching to battery and disconnecting from the LAN, my system freezes: I cannot move the mouse, the keyboard is useless (I can't even Ctrl-Alt to a terminal) and my only option is a hard boot.I currently have the 2.6.35-23 kernel and I have tried the following driver options for the wireless (all the below were tried with 2.6.35-22):

- the Broadcom STA driver in the repos- the latest STA dirver from Broadcom- the new broadcom driver, not yet available in ubuntu repos (brcm80211)- ndiswrapper ( I can only get win 7 drivers for my laptop, so this does not even enable the driver)My Wifi card uses the BCM43224 chipset. After a freeze, I have pored over the logs and I cannot find any obvious error messages preceding the event - so I am a little at wit's end ito resolving this. Can anybody give me any clues as to where I should start looking to resolve this issue?

Ubuntu :: Hangs And Freezes On Battery Power?

May 30, 2011

I'm running 11.04 on my Dell SXPS 1645. Today I unplugged my laptop from AC power a few times and after about 10 minutes, Ubuntu would hang, not responding to anything. Frozen mouse, frozen keys. The ONLY thing I could do to get it out was to do a hard hardware restart by holding down the power button.

It happened twice on Skype (and I thought it was just the buggy 2.2 beta that was hanging my beautiful OS), once while installing a printer, and once while I was just futzin around on firefox.

Jun 1, 2011

I've got a problem with my laptop and I finally decided to try to solve it. My computer sometimes (not everytime) freezes. It's just when I'm using battery power. I've checked my /var/log/messages.log file and these are the last messages before freeze (exactly at 9:16:15):

Ubuntu :: When Running Laptop On Battery Desktop Freezes

Oct 16, 2010

When I'm running the laptop on battery the desktop freezes. It doesn't matter what program I use, it also happens when I just boot the system login and do nothing. I then have no mouse, no keyboard - so no key combination works. The only thing I can do is turn the laptop off using the power button and turn it back on. Usually the desktop freezes with in 5 min after login, but I also had one case were I was able to work for about 2 hours. When I plug in the power supply everything works fine.

Ubuntu :: MSI Wind U120 Freezes When Running On Battery?

Nov 19, 2010

I have an MSI Wind U120 netbook (Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1 GB RAM). I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix. Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04, my system has experienced unrecoverable freezes when running on battery. The system reliably freezes when resuming from the suspend or hibernate modes when running on battery. It seems to load back up successfully but then freezes before I get a chance to enter my password. Yesterday and today I also noticed that the system freezes while idle and running on battery! This is even more disconcerting.

I have some experience as a Linux user (including using the terminal & editing configuration files) but not much experience as a Linux system administrator.

Ubuntu :: Upgraded To 11.04 - Freezes On Checking Battery State

May 1, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday but when I try to run it now it freezes on checking battery state. I've did some looking in the forums and found this post. [URL] Which in turn pointed me to this page. [URL] I have an ATI Radeon 5450 so I went through the steps for Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch

Now, when I try to start up the screen just goes blank as if I've turned the computer off. I can run the system in limited graphics mode (or whatever it's called) so I have the ability to do some troubleshooting there, but I'm a Windows convert and am pretty hazy as far as Ubuntu troubleshooting goes

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?

May 6, 2010

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.

When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.

The machine boots fine into Vista.

Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?

There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Ubuntu :: Right Mouse Click Freeze / When Right Mouse Button To Open Options Menu It Freezes And Does Not Open Menu?

Oct 14, 2010

just want to report "Right Mouse Click Freeze" on Ubuntu 10.10. When I click on anything with my right mouse button to open options menu it freezes and does not open menu. Sometimes when I shake my mouse left/right a bit it opens that menu, but this does not work always. It seems like xserver issue, but I'm not sure since I'm not expert in linux yet. Ubuntu :: Gui Freezes When Using Mouse?

Jan 20, 2011

I have a Foxconn with Intel 330 processor, 1 gig RAM, and 80 gig hard drive. Unit will freeze when using the mouse at infrequent intervals. I had Edubuntu 8.10 installed and have now installed 10-10 Ubuntu to rule out software issues. During the new install, the video would stop after a period of time, and could return to operation by moving the mouse. The same mouse, keyboard, and monitor are being used on three other computer boxes using a KVM switch. The problem is unique to this Foxconn box. An identical Foxconn box runs normal and is set up as a server

After the unit freezes, I can use the alt-ctr-sysrq RES to eliminate the GUI. This tells me that the Linux system is still running.

What segment of the system log should I be examining? Is this an IRQ issue?

However, my mouse/keyboard now freezes after 10+ minutes of use. Both are unresponsive, and the keyboard lights does not change with the use of caps-lock, etc.

The system didn't crash though. I had a download running which was completed despite the mouse/keyboard hang.

The computer is barely usable now, I really wished I didn't upgrade...
