Debian Hardware :: How To Test DVD+RW Media

I'm running Debian Testing (up-to-date) with no difficulties.I'd like to find a way to test/validate DVD+RW media to ensure that I will get error-free off-the-air recordings in a separate DVD recorder.I've only been able to find Windows-based Nero or Plextor utilities discussed on the DVD enthusiast web sites. If possible, I'd like to evaluate the media on my Debian box.
Currently using XFBurn, which doesn't seem to be the answer. FWIW, the DVD hardware is a Hitachi/LG burner. Dell Mini 9 Netbook with Windows XP OS died. It has a 16GB SSD. I was in the middle of installing HP printer software when it shutdown unexpectedly. Then upon turning it back on it says something about a media test failure, check cable and then Operating System Not Found. I've been able to boot using Damn Small Linux using an external cd drive.
When I type 'fdisk -l' I get:
Disk /dev/hda: 15.4 GB, 15408046080 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1873 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk /dev/hda doesn't contain a valid partition table
My wife has lots of pictures on the drive that she would like so I took it to a couple data recovery places and they were charging anywhere from $1000 just for jpegs up to $2600 for all files retrieved. That's more than I can budget for this. So my wife accepted the fact that the pictures are gone, but I figured I might as well try what I can because we have nothing more to lose.
I thought I'd try to get a hard drive cubby and attach it through USB to a working PC, but apparently Dell's SSDs are proprietary and the design is not accommodated. I thought maybe just the partition table information got erased somehow, so I tried using gparted and it found nothing. Whenever I use cfdisk and create partitions, I quit cfdisk after writing and it still says there is no valid partition table. I have no other ideas as to what I can do.

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.4 netbook edition for my toshiba satellite a105 laptop (windows XP) burned it to a CD, restarted my computer with the disc in drive, pressed f12 at the appropriate time, chose to boot from CD. after sitting for a second i get error PXE-e61 media test failure, check cable. and then it boots XP normally. how do i get around this to install linux!

I tried to install fedora in my pc. First I insert fedora dvd and install as per procedure then finally system says like that your installation is completed please reboot ur system. So, before reboot I tried to eject my fedora dvd but it couldn't come out. So after click reboot I eject that dvd. And I got error msg like "media test failure exiting intel boot agent". How can I overcome this error.

I have a Windows domain with a proxy. I have an account that can use the proxy and the URL that points to the proxy.pac file. this might seem a stupid question but can anyone tell me how do I enter the username and password for my test Windows account so that Debian can authenticate it?

I am trying to install mysql 5.1.44..so i downloaded the binary package, i extracted it and then followed the instructions that were in the manual but i keep getting this error when running this command

You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:
shell> /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysqld --skip-grant &
and use the command line tool /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables:

I have created mobility of 20 nodes and vbr traffic using following attached script I executed the file as ns234 vbr.tcl I got the vbr.tr and vbr.nam but I was unable to load the graph using matlab <trgraph> I thought problem with is vbr.tcl script.

I notice a bunch of weird what appear to be hard drive related error messages on my Linux server:

I'm considering installing Debian on my Toshiba A660 laptop but I want to be sure the wireless connection will work. I have Windows 7 on it already on it and it has a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. Is there an easy way to set up a wireless connection and will it work on a live CD to test it?

Setting up my Squeeze test box, I can't seem to get APache2 to find index.html. It keeps coming up with the initial "It works!" page.
On my Squeeze server, the /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file contains this line:
DocumentRoot /home/www_local
and that box serves the website perfectly.
On the test box, I created the /home/www_local directory and put an index.html file in it, then populated /etc/apache2/httpd.conf with exactly the same DocumentRoot line and restarted Apache. Still the same result -- Apache isn't finding my index.html file. I have grep'ed all the files in /etc/apache2 and /etc/apache2/conf.d looking for 'DocumentRoot' and it's not in any of them.

I downloaded the deb from the Phoronix site, installed it, and found out there were missing dependencies: php5-cli php5-gd.
These took up about 10.5 MB. Next I ran 'phoronix-test-suite list-tests', agreed to the license, then ran it with 'gui', and found out that I needed to load the 'PHP GTK' module. There is no Debian package ( at least no combination of gtk and php in description or name returned any results ), so I downloaded the source and read the instructions in INSTALL.
When running buildconf, it died due to 'phpize' not being found. This binary only comes with the php5-dev package, another 12 MB. After installing that package, buildconf dies with

Python's test case to test uniqueness of uuid.uuid1() in test_uuid.py is failing on wheezy on Virtualbox. However, when I change it to use uuid.uuid4(), it's successful always. I don't have wheezy installed on a bare machine to test.I faced this problem when installing Python 2.7.6 on my virtualbox. This is blocking a successful installation.

I'm doing some tests and playing around with postfix in a test squeeze server. What I want to achieve is a postfix mail server using ports 465 and 587 with smtp authentication to send mails. I decided to try Debian 5.0.4. I download from debian site CD1 iso image wich is enough to install Debian. After installing Debian my /etc/apt/source.list looks: # deb cdrom: Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.4 _Lenny_ - Official i386 CD Binary-1 20100131-18:53]/ lenny main

Then I try to install Synaptic. I enter apt-get install synaptic and get error because this package is in some other debian cd. There are 30 CDs with packages. I can not download all 30 CDs. Is there a way to change /etc/apt/source.list file so it can be posible to download some package cointed in some of 30CDs from some offical debian web repository and not from cd-rom media.

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

I recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I run a Home server using Debian, and have been using it as a backup server and using it to host a voice server. I wanted to try streaming music/video so I can enjoy music at remote locations, and I have used VLC media player before, but never on Linux. I located the VLC media player package on the Synaptics Package manger, and told it to download it along with the other additional packages, and it said it had to remove some old packages and incompatible ones as well, so I said go ahead. Well, the screen blanked out at some point during the installation process, so i rebooted the server. Now it will go thru the whole loading process, and where it is supposed to prompt me to log in, it gives me a grey background and my cursor, which does react, but nothing else happens, and the activity light on the server does not flash. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I would enjoy being able to log back into my server XD
I have some knowledge of how to use and work with Linux, but only from what I have read and messed around with.

I would appear that I recently installed linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64. Since then I have noted that my HP media bar up top doesn't work. This means I can't enable/disable wireless. From an lspci output, it still sees the hardware, and it's loaded, however, not functioning. Should I be looking at rolling the kernel back, or work on getting it working via some other means? Any liveCD I've tried doesn't seem to be able to get it going either. So I'm under the assumption here it is the kernel version, and not a hardware problem.

I'm using 32 bit (i686) Debian Lenny. The multimedia repo is installed, w32codecs is installed, VLC and Kaffeine are both installed. I was trying to listen to some audio files on the NPR site (link will follow) and find that I can't open the files with anything I have installed. The Linux version of the Realplayer isn't in the repo (and I don't really want to install it after some of the things I've read about it) but I gotta have my NPR and there's no way I'll EVER go back to a M$ OS. How can I listen to these files without downloading them and then uploading them to a media conversion site? I'm usually very good with google but this one has me stumped.

Unless I am logged in as root, I am unable to mount an external device (such as a flash drive or music player) This is what I get: I can, of course, pull up a root terminal and use the mount command, but I don't want every user to have access to the root terminal, but I would like everyone to be able to mount external devices. Short version: Why does apt-get update since recently ask me for my installation DVD?
Long version: In my sources.lst there is still an entry for the installation DVD.
I like that because if a package on DVD is still the newest version then there is no need to download it again. (If I comment out the DVD entry apt-get update will ignore the DVD but at the same time no package will ever be installed from it again, right?)
Since some time ago this was no problem as apt-get update didn't have a problem with the entry - or if it had (I don't really remember), there was just an error message and the process would continue with the other sources. But then this changed and now I'm asked to insert the disk (luckily I have only one DVD) every time and the routine waits until I have done so.
Is there a way to change that back?
I've read some apt documentation and the apt-* manual pages including apt.conf and some examples for that but could not find something useful though there might be something I missed because I didn't understand everything I saw.
Clearly, it makes sense that DVDs and the like can be included in apt-get update because some people update offline with these media. But (the standard) DVDs are read-only and the individual disks are identified by apt (see /var/lib/apt/cdroms.list). So the system should not expect an already known DVD to change but recognize if a new one is being used.

I'm running debian 8, no problems, after I recently upgraded some packages, skype did not open, I used terminal to open it and it gave an output saying

I'm going traveling and I had the bright idea of putting my sensitive and irreplaceable files on an sd card. Then if I leave my stuff in a sketchy hostel for the day, I can easily take the card and might lose only a replaceable netbook. The problem is that I want some files to have 600 permissions (rw-------), readable and writable only by owner.
But no power on earth seems to be able to force a fuse-ified filesystem to pay attention. Whether I try "chmod 600 filename.txt" as the owner/user or as sudo makes no difference. Nothing works. The sd card is mounted with a line in /etc/fstab:

So the user owns the files and they have typical permissions instead of the automounted default of 700. That's all very nice, but I'd like to be able to change permissions on just a few files!
