Debian Hardware :: Device Event Designator Changes With Each Reboot

Jul 31, 2015

Currently using a USB mouse, keyboard and the USB touch input from an Elo touchscreen connected to a Raspberry Pi (using the Raspbian flavor of Debian) through a USB hub and when I query the content of the directory /dev/input/ I get 4 "events" with each event designation associated with one of the input devices (the 4th one never seems to be active??).

pi@raspberrypi /dev/input $ ls -la
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 240 Jul 29 02:20 .
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 3300 Jul 29 02:23 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 Jul 29 02:20 by-id
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 Jul 29 02:20 by-path
crw-rw---T 1 root input 13, 64 Jan 1 1970 event0

[Code] ....

If I examine an "event" characteristics using the linux utility "evtest" - example "event0" , I "might" get:

pi@raspberrypi /dev/input $ evtest event0
Input driver version is 1.0.1
Input device ID: bus 0x3 vendor 0x4e7 product 0x20 version 0x100
Input device name: "Elo TouchSystems, Inc. Elo TouchSystems 2700 IntelliTouch(r) USB Touchmonitor Interface"

[Code] ....

which is the Elo touchscreen.

But if I reboot the Raspberry Pi - I can also get for an evtest of "event0":

pi@raspberrypi /dev/input $ evtest event0
Input driver version is 1.0.1
Input device ID: bus 0x3 vendor 0x413c product 0x3010 version 0x100
Input device name: "HID 413c:3010"

[Code] ....

which is the USB mouse.....

It appears as if the assignment of the "eventX" identifiers (i.e. the "X") is arbitrary and it can vary with each reboot... which is problematic as I need to identify which "device" will provide the touch events for openframeworks. Is there a way to assign a specific device to a specific "eventX" designation ???

how to get around this? I tried yum clean all, then yum update, again but it did the same. Ubuntu :: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Apr 16, 2011

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.

All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

Debian Multimedia :: No Event Sounds In XFCE 4.6.2 On Sid?

Jan 24, 2011

I recently gave XFCE a try, after using Openbox for a long time and I really like it, so that I think I will switch totally to XFCE. All is working fine, except one thing: I really would like to have event sounds.

So I launched the Appearance-Module and checked under the Settings-tab both Enable event sounds and Enable input feedback sounds. Following the tooltip for the event sounds I also installed libcanberra, but I get absolutely no event sound.

[Code]...

I thought, maybe there is a lack of a sound theme, so I also installed freedesktop-sound-theme, but that didn't help. I did already searched with Google and in this forum, but have found nothing that would help me. I would be very happy if anyone can give me an advice what to check or has a link to a tutorial for this sounds.

Ubuntu :: Device Paths Change After Ever Reboot?

May 2, 2011

After I reboot my Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS l machine my device paths change (even the boot drive) and this causes havoc on my two RAID5 arrays. The device paths change and causes a mismatch in my fstab and I have to manually mount both RAID arrays every time. It's quite frustrating and annoying and I would love for it to stop. This even happens for the boot path.

Example: my boot path is /dev/sde5 I reboot my machine and my boot path changes to /dev/sdm5

Why does this happen? And more importantly how can I stop it from happening so it stops messing with my RAIDs?

Hardware :: Block Device Names Change After Reboot

Jan 19, 2011

I built a Raid5 volume with 3 SATA II hard disk drives. Further I have a system disk conected through IDE. During the first setup the IDE disk becomes sda, the SATA II disk sd[bcd] respectively. Now, sometimes the device names change after reboot - why ever... E.g. one of the raid5 disk become sda and so I got an error message during the boot procedure regarding the raid set. Curious, when the system is up and I stop and restart the Raid5 volume it comes up and runs fine. Because I'm currently at work I can't post any more detailed config files at the moment.

Networking :: Ethernet Interfaces - Device Activated On Reboot

Dec 28, 2010

The ethernet configuration files are under
"/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts" such as "ifcfg-eth0:1" etc.

The file looks as follow:
Code:
DEVICE="eth0:1"
BOOTPROTO="static"
ONBOOT=no
IPADDR="172.23.17.10"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ALIAS="yes"

I've set the ONBOOT=no. This means this device should not be activated at boot-time. But as I reboot the machine, this device is activated again. This means the option ONBOOT doesn't work. Seems this is a bug of RedHat LINUX?

Ubuntu Servers :: Cold Boots Fine But Get 'Gave Up Waiting For Root Device' On Reboot

Mar 31, 2011

Recently setup Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an old Dell Poweredge 2650. It seemed to be working perfectly until I did my first reboot. I tried changing the 'root' reference on the linux line at the grub menu with no luck. I suspect the problem is something else but I have no clue.

So far the behavior seems completely consistent. If I physically power the machine down and start it back up everything works perfectly. However, if I do a sudo reboot now I'll end up at the initramfs prompt. I'm not comfortable setting up my dev environment on this box until I'm sure it will be stable. In case it matters the machine is running a single scsi drive and doesn't have a raid controller.

Fedora Installation :: F11 Install Worked But "No Bootable Device..." On Reboot?

Jun 13, 2009

I'm installing Fedora 11 x86_64 from the DVD iso. The SHA256 checksum was fine, and the media checked out fine just prior to install. The F11 install seems to go perfectly and I get all the way through the installation. However, on reboot, I get this message, "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"!!!!I'm installing to an old Intel 975XBX2 motherboard with 4GB of memory, which I have used successfully, flawlessly for every single Fedora install since F6. I've only been using one hard drive with a FAT32 partition, and an NTFS partition for Windows XP, the remainder of the disk is Fedora.I've probably tried this F11 install about 8 or 9 times already with no success; actually, the installation seems to go perfectly, but I just cannot boot the PC. I think there's something wrong with GRUB being written into the MBR of the hard drive, because I cannot boot DOS on that FAT32 partition, I can't boot into the NTFS partition which contains XP, nor can I boot into F11.Anyone else having problems with the boot? I've been a long time Fedora user and was counting on the reliability of F11: Wondering if that Anaconda re-write had anything to do with all of these problems?

Debian :: Computer Hangs And Sometimes Won't Reboot?

Jan 18, 2011

Computer hangs and sometimes won't reboot.

When it hangs I have seen this message a few times:

o[4348] EXT3-fs error (device sda1) ext3_get_imode_loc : unable to read inode block_inode = 14720620 block = 58753255

Also when the machine boots up I get a message saying something about IOMMU should be set in BIOS, but I can not find any such setting in BIOS. I do not know if this is related to the hanging.

I thought I had a hard drive problem at first so I tried a different hard drive. Same problem.

The mother board is an ASRock N68C-S.

One other thing, where is the file located that boot up messages are written to?
