After upgrading Squeeze, Gvim and Vim seems to be broken. So I went back to 7.2 by compiling from source. However I am failing to compile the gui version under Debian. I tried the configure options, apt-get build-dep vim etc but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know a straight way to make it work? Or even a way to find the previous version of vim gtk?
View 1 RepliesI have a problem with my gui . i have I810 onboard graphics . it says something like ( agpgart not there ) celeron 633mhz old machine 256 mg ram 20gb master and 7 gb slave . first drive is debian 2.4 and slave is winxp . i also have a lt winmodem i would like to get goin . i cant seem to figure out how to mount the floppy . i tried vi /etc/fstab but cant figure out the lingo .when i loaded it before i had everything working ,kde , floppy ,sound, but no modem .im totally stuck in command line (witch is fun ), because my cdrom went out so i cant just reload debian. i hope this makes some kind of sense to someone .
View 5 Replies View Related I'm running on Debian Testing, and I just distro-upgraded from Squeeze just a month ago. When I did, I had some strange sound and video problems. For the sake of this topic I'm just talking about the sound ones. Back then, my sound would only work as root, otherwise without any visible errors, I would play sound files and no audio would come out. I'm aware that this usually means that my user is not a member of the 'audio' group, but I did and Ihave confirmed it and all of my users are. Then, suddenly my sound inexplicably started working again, so I took it as it was. However two hours ago it disappeared again. The important information here is that nothing I did as a user could have effected it. All I did was let a video file buffer, write a text file to my documents, and send an email.
According to Alsamixer my sound card is HDA Intel & my chip is SigmaTel STAC9200. When I upgraded to Wheezy, the terminal told me that I would need to install proprietary drivers to get my sound (and especially) video working, however every tutorial I've found on how to do this seems to dead-end for my computer on the current testing branch of Debian.

I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded
not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

have You noticed that mt command doesn´t work anymore on 11.4? We try to install new version to hadle robotic library, but someone has written mt command as a new, and it doesn´t accept mt -f command anymore. cpio based mt command it´s not reliable as old one. Can anyone tell where to get old mt command which is compatrible new 11.4 x64 bit version?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Karmic since November and standby/sleep has always worked fine. Some weeks ago, it stopped working fine.
After a reboot, I can put the system in standby only once. If I try standby after that, the system seems to do a normal standby, but it resumes at the moment the fans would normally stop working.
I tried different things like the s2ram program, pmi action sleep, etc. I went to the BIOS and tried a number of things, one was succesfull: disable USB. When USB is disabled I can go into standby every time. When I enable USB again (even with no devices connected), standby only works once again.
So, how can I disable USB at the moment I go into standby?
I can't get my SAT card to work anymore for I'm installed 10.04.It worked fine under 9.10.Any idea how I can debug or solve the issue.

But if i don't use it for a short time (a week), when i want use it again and select it on GRUB.. after the first loading screen (on Ubuntu 10.04 the purple screen with Ubuntu in white and some points under), my screen is black. The computer screen is receiving signal because the led is green and not brown/orange like when is on standby mode. On Windows i haven't any problem.
First time it happened with Ubuntu 9.10. I didn't got solution for it and i format the partition and install the 10.04. But now it happen again with 10.04. I have an ATI 5770 and i have tried drivers since 9.12 till 10.4 (last ones the best i have had) On versions before 9.10 i had no problem, but i can't confirm that, because i had other graphic card (NVIDIA 9800GT). But the 5770 didn't work well on previous version so i updated to 9.10 and after this problem, updated to 10.04.
At spanish forum, people don't know solution for this problem, they never read about a similar problem. I hope you know a solution for it, because the only one i found and work is.. format and reinstall.
without any warning, mouse clicks stopped having any effect. I can move the cursor without a problem. No apps are frozen and I can type at the command line. But mouse clicks have no effect. The same mouse was working fine before and it works fine in Windows. When I look in /var/log/messages, I see:ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HWfallback to performance governor [OK]I don't know if this is significant or not. The mouse is connected via USB. I'm running Lucid Lynx with all of the latest updates.

The server software was upgrade a couple times now and it went from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 to eventually 10.04Now I'm 100% sure the current version should be 10.04 but all of the sudden an 'apt-get update' does not work anymore, so I dig some further why that could be...A simple 'cat /etc/lsb-release' gives me this answer

Since then I cant connect to the internet anymore. I can see all the wireless networks around me but when I attempt to connect to my home network it keeps asking me for the password. i didn't install anything before or after the updates. I am sure there was something on the updates that screwed my system.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI already had solved the problem [URL].. but after several yum updates it has appeared again. Within the script "/etc/ppp/ip-up" the sixth parameter isn't provided. But the sixth parameter should be "ppp0" (in this case). The script sets it into the variable $LOGDEVICE and passes it as first parameter to annother script. Successfully I had patched "/etc/ppp/ip-up". I would like to report a bug but I'm not sure if it is a wvdial or a ppp/pppd or a Fedora 14 bug.
Now (after several yum patch updates) my patched /etc/ppp/ip-up doesn't help anymore. The registration at the mobile phone provider seems to be ok but the internet connection isn't initialized.
According the man pages wvdial starts ppp or pppd and one of them seems to call /etc/ppp/ip-up. At which point in the subprocessed scripts (under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/) I didn't find out yet.
I'm using Fedora 15, I have installed XFCE and now I do not have audio in both XFCE and Gnome. The external DAC is found but does not emit a sound.

I installed 11.2 and now 11.3RC1 on a new HW: ASUS M4N72-E with AMD Phenom2 X4 965, 8GB Memory, standard settings.
I experienced unusual errors when copying large files to the new system with scp/ssh (connection broken).
Even stranger I could not read .tgz files created on the older machine, same OS 11.2, but MB ASUS M2N32-SLI with AMD Phenom X4 9850
Testing further reveals that if I create a .gz file from the same source it produces every time a different output:

I never saw something like it, I guess it must be something with the underlying library not working on the new processor. I tried with slower memory speed, newest BIOS etc ...always the same errors. Other wise the system works absolutely stable.
When I compare the generated files with one created on the older system it looks like there are single bits missing in a random number of bites.
I just upgraded from kde 4.4.4 to 4.6.0 in the *stable* kde repo, and now beclock effect doesn't works anymore I can't live without it how can I solve???
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing openSUSE 11.2 to get rid of my suddenly dysfunctional 11.1, my Audigy 2 doesn't produce a single sound anymore - neither via the regular nor the digital output. It used to work like a charm on 11.1. I cannot say how much I have come to hate Linux during the past 12 months after constant problems with system instabilities due to incompatible software component updates and stuff like my system still not working after ominously going out of service and "repairing" it with openSUSE's repair function.
I decided to get into Linux because I found it cool when I started with a couple of years abo and thought it would be well worth getting into an OS that might become the successor of Windows. I also wanted an OS I felt secure with when doing online banking or shopping.
Well, I have to say that Windows 7 delivers on all the promises Linux has made (at least those that are important for me), and that Linux hasn't advanced a micrometer in the time I have started using it. The only thing in favor of Linux was that it worked well enough on my 6 year old hardware. I'd rather purchase some new hardware and Windows 7 on top of than tormenting myself more with this unspeakable PITA Linux has proven to me to be. To hell with it. Stay in your server corner, but stop telling people Linux was anywhere close to being a useful desktop operating system. PS: Yes, I have tried other distros too.
I replaced one old RAM module with two newer, bigger ones, but now, the sound doesn't seem to work anymore. Already ran alsaconf andOutput of lspci for the audio device:

Update 6th March 2010: Update to Kernel 2.6.31-20 SOLVED the problem. Recording works again (still wouldn't in kernels 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-19). If a kernel update doesn't solve your problem, please read post 14 on page 2 by Mocha which seems to have solved the problem for other users without updating the kernel
Update 8th February 2010 to Kernel 2.6.31-19 did not solve the problem, please also read post number 7 for more details.
Quick Conclusion for other users who might experience the same problem:
After an update to kernel version 2.6.31-17 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, my external microphone did not work anymore. Playback was possible, just recording would not work anymore, although there was quite some background noise in the headphones. This made it impossible for me to use Skype and/or Sound Recorder.
All the possible solutions offered below did not help in my case (although you might give them a try).
I switched back to kernel version 2.6.31-16 where the problem does not occur.

I know there are lots of threads about this topic, but I have spent hours on this problem already and none of the solutions offered so far worked for me so I decided to start this thread.
I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 and so far, my external microphone worked flawlessly in Skype as well as in Sound Recorder. A few days ago, I received a call on Skype and all the guy on the other side could hear was loud noise. I can only play sound, but not record anymore (i.e. the microphone doesn't work anymore). I tried two different microphones just to be sure whether one was defective and also checked it in Windows (where they both work).
I am not sure what might have caused this problem, I just remember a kernel upgrade about that time (not sure whether this is the reason though). I use 2.6.31-17-generic now.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1) Right-click on the Sound Icon in the top right corner and checked the following: in the hardware tab, it is set to analog stereo duplex, input is set to internal audio analog stereo (no other choice here) and the mic is NOT muted (playing with the volume doesn't help either) and output is set to internal audio analog stereo (again, no other choice) and connector is set to analog output (here I can switch to analog headphones or analog speaker, but makes no difference).
I remember that I could choose between Microphone 1 and Microphone 2 in the input tab; this is somehow magically gone.
2) Installed padevchooser, tried several settings to no avail
3) When I use "alsamixer" (version 1.0.20) in a terminal, Playback>Master is set to 100<>100, Capture is set to 150<>150, lowering and/or playing with these figures doesn't help either.
When I use "alsamixer -Dhw:0" in a terminal, I get the same results as in step four.
4) In Gnome Alsa Mixer, only "Beep" is muted, everything else is set to max. I have Master, Headphon, PCM, Front, Front Mi (x2), Lin, Mic, Mic Boost, Capture (x2, set to record), Beep, Speaker
I have tried to mute/unmute different setting to no avail. Now I wonder why I have two Front Mi and two Capture entries. This is different than it used to be, might this be causing the problem?
5) Fiddling with Pulse Audio Volume Control didn't help either.
6) Had a look at "paman" (pulse audio manager), not sure whether I should change anything here.
7) Installed "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" and rebooted as recommended in several threads, did not help either.
Added the parameters "model=auto" and "probe_mask=1" to '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf', did not work, so I deleted the entries again (hint from [url], see post 5)
Now I am at my wits end. I need my microphone to work, especially for Skype, otherwise I have to switch to Windows every time I receive or want to make a call which is definitely not a long-term solution?
Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this problem? As I said, it used to work flawlessly just a few days ago and now I don't even know what I should do next to make it work again...

I use Kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and UNR 9.10 on my netbook... both worked just fine before(with every version of Ubuntu since 8.04), but I didn't use them for a little while with 9.10 and nothing from either of them... Logitech USB headset and the IPV Free2 USB phone.... granted I couldn't use all the features with the Free2 phone before but I could still use it to talk with skype. When I go to sound devices in skype, they are both recognized by the system... but just will not work no matter what.

I've got a double boot system (Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Maverick). Since I updated Grub2, Grub doesn't work anymore! I'd tried this (because I HAD that error). But since than, I'd a black screen (harddisk didn't anything, and Grub too...) And now, after using a couple of these commands via the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Live CD I get a mini bash in Grub, but no entry's to one of the two systems! What's wrong, and what do I have to do? (and what did I wrong?
