Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: GPT Support In Grub2?

I have just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, and followed the D-I recommendation to upgrade to Grub2. However, the server will no longer boot - giving a 'missing operating system' error, so it's not getting very far in the boot loader process. I have read, in various location that Grub2 supports GPT, but my efforts to fix the situation have met with little success.
I have managed to boot the system using SuperGrub2 (recovery live cd) and can start up successfully from there. However, when I try to fix the grub installation using the Debian wiki recommendation, I'm met with:

After an update on squeeze about a week or two ago, my console font turned green. I'm not exactly sure of the timing, because I switch between lenny and squeeze, and some time passed between the update and the reboot in squeeze.
During the update, I was asked if I wanted to keep my altered /etc/grub.d/00_header or take the package maintainer's version. I took the PM's version, knowing I'd lose my edit (set gfxpayload=1024x768x16). When I add that line to the new 00_header, run update-grub and reboot, the console font is the size I want, but it's a dull green. Reminds me of my first computer. How do I get it back to white and keep the 1024x768 resolution?
Currently booting with grub-legacy and chainloading grub2. If I boot entirely with grub-legacy, and pass vga=791, the console font will be white. It doesn't matter which kernel I use. Currently, I'm running 2.6.32-3-686. Same behavior exists if I use 2.6.30-2-686. If I use 1024x768x8 I get a dull gray instead of dull green.

The way I usually boot Linux distros, and this has worked for every distro I have tried up to Kubuntu 10.10, was to install Grub2 on an extended partition, run "dd if=/dev/sda5 of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1", and then adding that bin file to my Windows boot.ini. What usually happens after is that I get the Grub2 menu after selecting it from the Windows Bootloader.
The problem is, with the latest Squeeze AMD64, all I get when I do this is a static cursor and the computer is frozen and I have to hit the reset button.I mounted the Linux partition with Ext2IFS (mkfs.ext3 -I128 /dev/sda5 to get 128KB inodes), and I can see that the Squeeze installer did indeed install Grub2, because I can see the files in their respective directories.

Whenever I reboot, I get GRUB and the _ pinking, and that's it. With rescue cd I can have chroot shell, to troubleshoot I did the upgrade-from-grub-legacy and installed it to both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb In recovery I redid the upgrade-grub and grub-install commands but still have the same "GRUB and _ blinking".
Because the text "GRUB" and then nothing I didn't enouncter while googling, I need to ask here for further troubleshooting.

How can I restore or reinstall GRUB2 from squeeze installation? I tried various suggestions from various online articles (most of them for ubuntu), but I couldn't find a solution. Is there any solution, specifically for Debian? GRUB reinstallation from install cd, didn't worked as well. Since I couldn't boot at all, I restored GRUB1 and I'm posting from Lenny, but I can't access Squeeze this way (probably because I have squeeze's partition, ext4 formatted).

This is my specific solution to my specific problem. After updating to Squeeze from my prior Lenny distro (amd64 with whole disk encrytion using LVM2, dm-crypt, LUKS) everything went well - at first. I was duped like so many, thinking that all was well and I could remove the legacy-grub (aka: Grub1) and just use grub-pc (aka: Grub2). As soon as I removed the legacy-grub and rebooted my laptop, I was confronted with:
GRUB Loading stage1.5 GRUB loading, please wait..Error 15 At this point I wasn't sure if it was a Grub problem or a deeper encryption problem - especially after reading that some people had missing packages in Squeeze (lvm2, dm-setup, initramfs-tools, etc.)
Okay, the solution for me.
1. download and burn to disk: debian-live-6.0.0-amd64-rescue.iso[URL]..
2. scroll to and press enter/return on: text rescue
3. choose a root directory - for example: /dev/blah/root (I wrote down the list of possible /dev/.... for reference - this helped me remember where and what I had partitioned in Lenny)
4. choose: Execute a shell in /dev/blah/root
5. once in the shell, I discovered I needed to mount a few of those partitions that I had written down in order to get access to grub-probe, update-grub, grub-install, etc. You may not have to if your partitions are minimal. I you need to use other partitions, type (for example):

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I installed the Squeeze with CD-ROM netinstall. My /home is in /dev/hda6, reiserfs format, and I want to preserve it, I didn't make backup, and there is not the reiserfs option in the partition editor of the netinstall, so that it would be formated the home, otherwise it is not used as home, and I can not even mount it. I try to edit /etc/fstab with the UUID of the device hda6 as home. I have just found reiserfs in http://packages.deb.at/squeeze/i386/rei ... i/download.

I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:

there were no entries in the Grub 2 menu after booting. I don't really understand the numbering of hd0,0 to like sda, but I changed "root (hd1,0)" to "root (hd0,0)" if Windows is on hd0, but after rebooting, I still didn't see it. I read somewhere that Grub2 starts partitions at 1, but wasn't sure that was true because in menu.lst they start with 0 sometimes. know entry-level steps to solve this?

After removing a hard drive I (thought I)wasn't using, GRUB failed to load(turns out stage1 was on that drive) and it refused to install to a new drive(even after I kexec'd into the system - which was fun, considering the LiveCD used a different name for the hard drive). I finally threw in the towel and installed GRUB2, which worked after removing a second, incorrect root=. However, I can't find out how to switch the font from the fugly default to something that doesn't try to gauge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

I upgraded a while back to Windows 7. I run two separate HDDs, with debian on sda and windows on sdb. Everything worked fine, up until i upgraded to windows 7. The installer forced me to unplug sda. After installing I repositioned the HDDs and was stuck with a "NTLDR is Missing" message. After removing the search -fs--uuid tag from grub.cfg, Windows 7 booted for a good 0.5 sec and then rebooted. All that flashed was the "Starting Windows" page. I see similar bugs reported in the launchpad, but nothing that directly parallels this.
Here's my windows entry in grub.cfg:
Changing ${root} to (hd1) makes no difference. Also, I've been using Windows 7 for moths now without a problem, it's only when I try and boot it form grub2 that I get a problem. Physically removing sda lets Windows 7 boot fine.

I recently upgrade my grub to grub2 and had problem to boot debian. After trying to fix it myself, I played around with grub-image-ntldr, my debian now works ok, but I cant boot my XP anymore.
Now when I try to boot XP, I got "No grldr" message. If I copy my ntldr and rename it to grldr, my XP will boot ok. So it seems that when I try to boot XP it doesn't chainload ntldr anymore, it is looking for grldr.
I tried to change "chainload +1" to "chainload /ntldr", it complains about invalid signature. Does anyone knows why my grub now using grldr instead of ntldr?

I installed Firestarter firewall on debian Squeeze.Now i note there is a gui available in System->Administration which apparently does not need to be running all the time - its not set up to start on boot.When I boot I notice the boot message has a line saying "Starting Firestarter firewall .... failed"When I am logged in and type "/etc/init.d/firestarter status" as the Firestarter FAQs say, I get"Firestarter is running... ... (warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.

When I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.

Daily updated Debian Testing Because Debian is the only operating system on this laptop and I keep at least two working kernels, I would like to hide Grub2's menu unless I press a key (like one could do with Grub). I can hide the menu if the line GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 is in /etc/default/grub but it doesn't appear after pressing SHIFT, which is a threat if the system cannot boot the selected kernel. Right now, the timeout is set to one second. I've read Grub2's documentation and [URL] and tried various combinations, but I haven't been able to make this work.

I just got a new hard drive and figured I might as well do an installation of Squeeze (and was previously using Lenny). That went fine, and then I decided that I should copy over my old Lenny installation to the new disk -- mostly to have a working backup without bothering to do a new installation on a partition of the new drive. My partition scheme was a smaller /boot partition and then a much larger / partition with everything else standard (and a much larger /data partition rather than storing everything under /home). So I copied /boot over to a new partition on the new disk, and the same with /. That was done from the Squeeze installation, so the Lenny install wasn't active at the time. I modified all the appropriate entries in /etc/fstab to use UUIDs rather than partition numbers and ran an update-grub.
It detected everything on the old and new disks without a problem. When I went to try and boot up the transferred Lenny installation, it hung on trying to activate the root file system (I've forgotten the exact messaging). Not entirely unexpected, mind you. I went and took a look at the grub.cfg file. It does list that the transferred Lenny is on partition sda8 (correct), it has the correct uuid for the boot partition... but it seems to be setting the root incorrectly. Specifically, the root is still set for the old disk (though in its new position of hd1 instead of hd0), and the "linux" line sets a root for the old device. Or more specifically, this is the menu entry I get, with a few // comments.

The odd thing there is that it sets the root according to the *current* position of the old install disk (maybe some trickery with detecting the correct UUID before setting the root), but the "linux" line refers to the *old* partition. The two lines will never match up no matter what. Now if I edit grub.cfg manually, I can make it boot (and run) normally, as I've verified. For example, I made a couple manual changes to do this:

And that works perfectly, the installation works just fine. Of course, the problem is that those changes will/would be lost every time I run an update-grub. So my question, in a nutshell, is how can I configure things so that update-grub sets things properly to the new devices? Or in other words, where in the copied installation are the variables I need to change? I did note one thing odd -- the existence of a vga=795 line. For the new Squeeze installation, I'm using gfxpayload and there's no vga=anything line anywhere. My old installation, of course, had its own grub installation where I did use vga=795 to set the console resolution properly.
So my first guess was that update-grub (for Grub2) was pulling config information out of the Lenny /boot/grub folder (grub legacy). Unfortunately I tried several changes there and it made no difference. Then I deleted the entire /boot/grub folder entirely from the copied Lenny installation and ran update-grub again (the Squeeze grub version). It changed absolutely nothing. That's very confusing for me, since I have no clue where it could be getting vga=795 from, *except* the now-deleted Lenny /boot/grub folder. Where in the copied Lenny installation, I can change something to make it so that update-grub picks up the correct information?

Just installed squeeze on a new laptop(had been runny Lenny on my older one with no issues, but no sound or wireless on the new one).I decided to install the ATI drive for my Radeon Mobility 4500(or some close revision) because the fan is constantly running and based on some other postings, it seems that it could be the graphics card causing it.Downloaded the driver from ATI's site and it seemed to install fine but when starting X.

When I try to downgrade from sid squeeze I don't get GDM running just a login promt after a reboot.Have also reinstalled nvidia driver but still only login promt.I did aptitude update and aptitude full-upgrade after changing sources.list from sid to squeeze.

Got a problem mounting my Windows partition in Squeeze. It keeps refusing to mount it for me in Dolphin. I am a member of the disk and fuse groups, /dev/fuse is owned by root:fuse, and /sbin/mount.ntfs points to /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g, which in turn points to the ntfs-3g executable. I kind of need this ASAP. I am supposed to be finishing with this machine in 35min, and I am dead in the water without the ability to copy some files from the Squeeze ext4 partition over.

I installed Debian Squeeze from a net install to a raid 1 array. I have been having a lot of troubles related to being able to write to one or more of the mounted drives - even touch gives me errors.

I found a thread that indicated that this bug was fixed in the next kernel version: 2.6.32-6. I am willing to upgrade the kernel to get rid of my problems. Is a squeeze kernel at 2.6.32-6 or higher available? If so, where? I have not compiled my own kernel, and am not very interested in getting into that.

I use my laptop at the college, and I've to suspend him frequently. So, I've decided to install the package pm-utils, to hibernate my PC, instead of power off it. When I try to do "# pm-hibernate", a tty appear, and this error is displayed :

I have upgraded my server to Debian 6.0 Squeeze but it looks like some of my sites are not compatible with PHP 5.3.x so I would like to revert to previous 5.2.6 version.So my question is what to do?a) Remove PHP 5.3.x from system via apt-get and install my old 5.2.6 from old archives at /var/cache/apt/archivesorb) just try to update from archives PHP to 5.2.6?

As a long time user of some other distributions I decided to switch to Debian and installed 6.0 from amd64 kde cd image.Upon logging to KDE I discovered thatant locate knetworkmanager anywhere,it doesnt autostart and I could not find it anywhere else.I am connecting through a wireless network to the Internet so I cant connect through the Ethernet to download it through apt-get for example,if it is not installed by default.lly confused,knetworkmanager is standard tool in KDE but I cant find it in Debian 6.0

A couple days ago I installed Debian Lenny (netinst) to my friend's laptop, a IBM Thinkpad T23. Got a black screen after gdm loaded and the laptop seemed frozen. Decided to upgrade to squeeze. I edited the apt sources file and changed all the instances of lenny to squeeze, and then upgraded.Had the same display problem, but found a web site that suggested disabling acpi. So I did that, got the sound working, (needed cs46xx firmware), and all seems to be running fine.I get some weird udev messages at boot time, but I have a feeling that's due to how I upgraded. I can't copy and paste since the messages aren't in my system log. If anybody wants more information about it, I can supply it. pgrep shows two instances of udev running so it appears the messages are only warnings.When upgrading to squeeze, I used tds.net debian mirror links. Earlier today I switched to Debian's official US repo URLs and had to upgrade about 250 packages after reloading package data.
Now, when I click on System -> Administration -> Time and Date.After a couple seconds I get a dialog box that says "The configuration data could not be loaded" in bold black letters. Underneath that in smaller letters, "You are not allowed to access the system configuration" I receive that same error when accessing "services" and "users and groups."But I can access the synaptic package manager and update manager from the administration submenu.

I have a dual boot system with windows XP on one drive and Debian "Lenny"on the second drive. I use the entire hard drive for the debian install. I decided to upgrade to "Squeeze" this weekend. The install went well until I got to the Grub installation. I received a message saying that "A step failed", continue and try another option. I elected to "finish the install" without Grub2. everything continued to go accordingly until it was time to boot into the new system. I was able to boot into Squeeze, but not back into windows. Does something have to be changed in the /etc/grub/menu.lst.? This has proven to be somewhat of a challenge and I sure could use some feedback here.
