I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.
The default menus in XFCE don't include many things that I want to use from KDE. How can I get those on the XFCE menus? There is a so-called "menu editor" in the settings menu, but it has no documentation

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian sid and currently have xfce 4.8.0 installed. I have the thunar-volman package and it is configured to automount everything (cdrom & usb). I have hal, udev, gamin and autofs installed as well.For some reason though, automount just isn't working. It's starting to annoy me.I can mount the devices manually.I looked around already but most posts just advise you to install hal or something.

I don't think it to be a permissions issue, they are -rw- r-- r--
This service is called by a timer that goes off daily. Below is wallpaper.service
I currently have a Samba share on a Debian 7 system. This share was only ever used by Windows systems on the network.
I just finished setting up a Debian 8 system with Xfce, and now I would like to connect to the share. I already installed gvfs-backends and gvfs-bin. When I go to Thunar file manager, and click browse network, I'm presented with a "Windows Network" shortcut. When clicked it says: Failed to open "Windows Network". Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory.
I've tried editing .xinitrc to contain ck-launch-session and dbus-launch to no avail. Console kit is installed. I'm using Sid without a login manager, and xfce's suspend and hibernate work fine on my Wheezy computer. Xfce4-session and consolekit are installed. Is this a problem with permissions?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe laptop runs Debian Squeeze XFCE installed from the Live iso (uname -a gives 2.6.32-5-686 as the kernel) and has Wicd 1.7.0 for network management and uses the ipw2100 wifi firmware/drivers. It connects fine using WEP encryption at home and to unencrypted connections found in a couple of public areas. I have had one problem with a WEP encrypted connection in a cafe (got through encryption, but could not get an IP address. There are workarounds which I will try next time I have coffee there When changing my router to use WPA2, I get 'bad password' errors. There is quite a literature on 'bad password errors' and Wicd and kernel 2.6.32, however a lot of the pages are contradictory. The Wicd log showed this...

Just upgraded (libudev0 and related) and system fails to mount other partitions, gives a lot of errors and drops to single mode.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am an old Debian user, ho just reinstalled it again to see how it evolved since my las version (3.2). I am sharing it with Arch Linux, And decided to let bot of them. I am using GDM compiled and configured in Arch, and removed GDM2 from Debian (i just like the easy menu.list from the old GDM). The problem is that when i update the kernel, it didn't fing GDM and drops an error message. I tried removing the distro-preconfigured Kernels, as i compiled my own 3.0.0-rc2 Kerenel, but i cant delete the previous ones. Now everytime i do an install or uptgrade, apt-get drops wastes some time, and drops an error message:

Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.
I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.
Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.
Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.
Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.
I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning.Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears.After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.
Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.
i have the basic knowledge of networking. a week ago i installed debian Lenny version on an old pentium 3. in addition i installed a ddclient configured it according to many tutorials.i searched google a few days but didnt find my case. i ran the folowing command :

After reboot, and ever since, I am getting warning: WARNING: Could not find hdaps input device (No such file or directory). You may be using an incompatible version of the hdaps module. Falling back to reading the position from sysfs (uses more power). Use '-y' to silence this warning.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've got a problem with touchscreen (NNK Switches 5.7" model: FT-CU04B). It is not supported under Linux, but I managed to get it working with usbtouchscreen module, after some modifications of course. It gets recognized by system now, it is possible to calibrate it correctly through xinput_calibrator but it isn't possible to "left click with it". I know that it's weird so I want to make myself clear - touchscreen recognizes touch - when touching button for example, it reacts with "going down" but when I'm releasing button, it "goes up" again, without action. I've tried mapping left mouse button with xinput set-button map 1 0 0 0 0 0, but without success, buttons remain "unclickable".

I'm running Testing and need to pass some parameters to my bttv tv tunner card, for this reason I created the following file /etc/modprobe.d/kozumi.conf with this content:

The problem is that for some reason this options aren't properly set after booting the computer, I've tried different combinations for line 1 and 2 without success.
I'm used to rmmod the bttv driver and modprobe manually with those settings but I'd like to automate the process.
I am on debian jessie. I ran "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and midway through the upgrade my computer suddenly rebooted.
I wasn't paying close attention to the upgrade process so I didnt see if there was any error messages right before the reboot. The laptop was plugged in, fully charged and I've never had issues with overheating.
When I boot now I get to a shell with a message that says:
Code: Select allWelcome to emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
If I try "systemctl default" there's a message that simply says "Hangup", nothing else happens.
Looking through "journalctl -xb" I see this:

The announcement of several new make scripts in the 2.6.32 release notes is very exciting.1.8. Easy local kernel configuration.Most people uses the kernel shipped by distros - and that's good. But some people like to compile their own kernels from kernel.org, or maybe they like following the Linux development and want to try it. Configuring your own kernel, however, has become a very difficult and tedious task - there're too many options, and some times userspace software will stop working if you don't enable some key option. You can use a standard distro .config file, but it takes too many time to compile all the options it enables.
To make easier the process of configuration, a new build target has been added: make localmodconfig. It runs "lsmod" to find all the modules loaded on the current running system. It will read all the Makefiles to map which CONFIG enables a module. It will read the Kconfig files to find the dependencies and selects that may be needed to support a CONFIG. Finally, it reads the .config file and removes any module "=m" that is not needed to enable the currently loaded modules. With this tool, you can strip a distro .config of all the unuseful drivers that are not needed in our machine, and it will take much less time to build the kernel. There's an additional "make localyesconfig" target, in case you don't want to use modules and/or initrds.

I have setup a few machines within my house. The Debian Squeeze machines do not provide a host name in the DHCP client list on my router. Strangely, my Ubuntu, Android, and Blackberry machines do show host names. I have noticed the same behavior when wirelessly tethering my Debian laptop to my Android phone (which also uses DHCP). Is there something I need to enable to have the name show up on the router?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am experimenting with installing a bare minimum, network capable installation of Debian Squeeze. Right now, I am having trouble getting proper host name resolution. I have provided the output of ping (which is able to resolve names), wget (which is unable to resolve names), and the contents of the files I believe to be relevant to the problem. When I installed Debian, I installed *only* the SSH Server from the list of available configurations. Since then, I have installed mdns4, dnsmasq, mdns-scan, and libnss-mdns to get name resolution to work with no success so far. All packages were installed with no recommends -- aptitude -R package name. What am I missing to get host name resolution working?

I am trying to set up a DMZ host - that is, one multifunctional PC between the WAN and the LAN. I've started with a basic router, and expanding upon that as the need arises. I am currently trying to gain access (from the WAN) to a website hosted on one of the servers in the LAN, but I am having trouble accessing the host from the WAN; I think my iptables configuration may be too restrictive. On the DMZ host, I'm using Debian (Etch). I have setup dhcp3-server, a script to configure iptables and pound (reverse-proxy). The (virtual) machine has 4 network cards: eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3; eth0 is the WAN, eth1 through eth3 serve 3 different virtual LANs.
All machines in the LAN (except one windows 2008 server - I might want to address that problem later) get their IP adresses correctly via dhcp from the DMZ host. All machines on the LAN can access the internet (including the 2008 server if I configure it manually) as they should. If I access http://localhost on the DMZ host, pound reports "The service is not available. Please try again later." - as it should.
I can ping the DMZ host from the WAN on 10.0.0.79 However, if I try to access the DMZ host from the WAN (http://10.0.0.79) I get "Unable to connect" from firefox. I'm sure this is not a pound problem, so I think it's in the iptables, or maybe I should be installing some extra software that I'm unaware of.

Having an issue with rsync
I launch the following

Basically I download to main PC and rsync to my pi as the pi has a fraction of the speed for some reason when downloading form a source outside of my network.
The first few files will sync fine. Then I start getting errors like this

The directory on the host has user and group ownership as pi. Rsync has been setup to login without a password.
Using Debian 5.0 Stable, with all current updates, if I type \192.168.0.249 I get samba access and can use all the shared files ok.if I go via the network the computer should be called \squ-eee-zeboxserver but instead comes up as \SQU-EEE-ZEBOXSERsqu-eee-zeboxserver which when clicked gives the attached error.
