Debian Configuration :: Vanishing Boot Messages ?
May 4, 2010
An issue that has been hassling me for years since I started using Linux (Debian!) is related to the boot messages that quickly scroll on the video during the boot process. The main hassle is related to the fact that I cannot get a log of those messages. The second hassle is due to the fact that with my brand new netbook (Toshiba NB200) I cannot even stop the scroll and go back along the message stream with SHIFT+PageUpDown to understand what's going on. Of course I know that I can get a log of the boot process with 'dmesg' but I get the feeling that the very first lines show some problem I cannot grab at all.

I'm trying to stop all boot time messages from appearing -- basically I'd like to have a simple blank screen from grub to xdm.
I tried everything -- used the "quiet" option in grub's config, added dmesg -n 1 to rc.local, changed console=ttySx, set kernel.printk in sysctl.conf to 4 1 1 7, and even eradicated rsyslogd altogether... to no avail. I still see all sorts of messages on my screen.

I have a small LAN. I am in the process of installing a Debian Lenny/Squeeze system into the LAN. I want to send and receive system messages using rwalld and wall.I can send a system message from my Debian system to another box using rwall. I can send a local message within the Debian box using wall in a console.I cannot send a local message using wall Konsole in KDE 3.5.x. The KDE Write daemon fails to provide any pop-up window./usr/bin/wall is installed from the bsdutils package and is set to -rwxr-sr-x.
The ktalkd package is installed. The KDE control center shows a configuration option in Internet & Network settings called Local Network Chat. When not in X, mesg is set to y at the console. After starting KDE and I open Konsole, mesg is always set to n. I don't know how this setting toggles. Further, setting mesg to y in Konsole has no effect on getting wall to work.mesg is set to y when I run xterm in KDE. Then wall works within that terminal window. However, the KDE Write daemon does not see the message in xterm. When I send a message from another system to the Debian system using rwall, xterm receives the message but not Konsole or the KDE Write daemon.

The system crontab (/etc/crontab) uses the same format, except that the username for the command is specified after the time and date fields and before the command.
[code]...
Every hour, I get an e-mail complaining about the first line of the crontab:
[code]...
I get the same complaint from the other entries: It looks to me as if cron, or anacron, is trying to execute the user (root) as a command. Predictably, the shell doesn't like it, so barfs and triggers an e-mail about it. Why is this not doing what the man page says it should do? The 2nd problem I believe is related to exim, not cron. The e-mails I'm getting above are being bounced from my ISP because they are directed to root@myisp.com, rather than my regular e-mail address. When the message bounces, it bounces to my regular e-mail address. In /etc/aliases, I have root: [URL]... and in etc/email-addresses I have root: [URL]... Adding the entry to /etc/email-addresses allowed the bounce to find me because the sender's address is [URL]... but how can I get cron to send these messages to me in the first place, instead of root?

Why I can install amd64 programs and why I get unknown for the uname -p command?

I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

Without going into a lot of the reasons, I have a bootable program on a USB stick that i would like to 'boot' when debian is starting up (or after it completes, or whenever it makes sense to do it). My MB does not support a USB boot, I've removed the floppy and CD so I can add additional HDs (its a small box but well ventilated).
Another option I have is to use my bios 'network boot' option, but I have no clue how to use it and the only description in the mb manual says "Allows system to be booted over a network" In network boots, *usually* one is given an option of specifying a device address, and the network boot executes a boot protocol (e.g. bootp), and the boot image file is downloaded to the target, stored and run out of RAM. No evidence of this behavior is exhibited when the network boot option is selected in the bios...

I use NFS to serve up my media files to all the other machines on my network. What I am seeing is if a client has the NFS directories mounted for a couple of hours, files will start "vanishing" from what is being served up. The files are still there on the server. The client can no longer see them. The only way to make them viewable to the client again is to unmount the directory on the client and then remount it.

In order to get a newer kernel that would recognize a linksys usb wifi adapter I got the advice to upgrade to a newer kernel - 2.6.30 or newer. Which I am able to get from backports.
But when I try with .30 or .32 my machine will not boot. I do have a raid, but it is only used for data files - I do not boot from it or have any system files on it.
First I get this error:

I installed Debian, apparently without KDE or gnome capabilities. At least that's what it tells me when I try to follow instructions for installing same. So, I figured I created an image of an installation disk without those, or OpenOffice, or Xwindows capabilities - (debian-505-i386-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso). So I created another image on CD of debian-505-i386-CD-1.iso, which I planned to install over the original install. However, I cannot get the computer to boot off the CD anymore; it always reverts to the Boot Menu (I have Windows and Debian partitions). The disk whirs around for a while, and then the multiple OS boot menu comes up. This is all being driven by the fact that I don't seem to have a working copy of OpenOffice.Org installed. Although I have managed to play around with mounting and unmounting the CDROM, and using the file commands, I don't seem to be able to actually get an application working. I downloaded the complete OpenOffice.org installation from their website, and extracted all *.deb files to CD. I attempted to unpack and install the OpenOffice.org files directly, and it seemed to do that, but the program does not seem to be available to me. I figure my best option is to reinstall with the right image.

Warning: NooB typing this. Two days ago I replaced an old version of Kubuntu with Squeeze. (This is not the computer/system I've written about in two recent threads.) Installation went smoothly, but one very early boot (I think the very first after installation) halted very early on, with:Waiting for /dev to be fully populated... [ 4.051267]ACPI: I/O resource 0000:00:1f.3 [0x1c00:0x1c1f] conflicts with ACPI region SMBI [0x1c00-0x1c0f]I stared at that for a very long time, used another computer to google for clues on what to do about it, couldn't find any text that I could understand -- I don't have a degree in anything computer-related, I'm just Joe Blow who wants to get things done on a computer without malware scares -- and eventually gave up and rebooted.
The reboot went well and I hoped there'd just been some kind of fluke. Just now, however, booting -- for perhaps the second or third time since the frozen mis-boot -- brought an elegant message telling me of a kernel failure and asking me if I wanted to inform whoever of it. (Yes, I responded.) The computer seems to be working fine: I haven't rebooted it since that error message, yet here I am browsing and posting away.Unlike this person, for example, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. (Well, I do know that he's using SuSE, I'm using Debian Squeeze, and they're not the same.)The computer's a circa-two-year-old laptop; I doubt that it's flaky because I there were no (visible) boot problems with Kubuntu just last week. I haven't installed anything other than from debian.org's squeeze repository. The mouse that's plugged in now isn't the same as the trackball plugged in yesterday, but that's the extent of any "hardware changes".If this computer fails to boot one time in four and at other times gives scary error messages that I can safely ignore -- well, I can live with that. But my guess is that it's more like an oil pressure warning light in a car: that I ignore this stuff at my peril.

I have a few problems with my openSUSE 11.3 (I were using openSUSE 9 ages ago, then I moved to Debian, jet after few years I though way not to give openSUSE another chance ).
Basically all is great except for 1 little annoying problem - system tray.Applications like Amarok, Network Manager, SUSE updater, etc just does not show up in system tray! Amarok keeps playing music after I minimalize it to tray, but its no where to be found XD.
I'm using the following repositories: download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/ download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.3/ packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.3/
Do you know a command for zypper to install newest packages, ignoring branding (from who package is)? That is one of things that truly is a pain, and which I never experienced while using Debian.

When I insert an SD card in the reader, slackware creates a mount point and mounts my card volumes. On unmounting the volumes, the mount point vanishes. How do I achieve this manually? When I attempt to mount a volume using the mount command, the mount point folder must exist and the folder does not vanish on umount. Is there a way to create a mount point if it does not exist? and ensure that the folders vanish on umounting?

Yet another problem, but I need some input here. I just updated and restarted my computer (lots of updates), and when I logged in all of the window decorations are gone as well as alt-space and alt-tab doing nothing. Thinking that the update messed with the WM settings, I opened the settings manager up, but both the Window Manager and Window Manager Tweaks section are blank. The other sections are fine, just those two. (and no, I'm not doing Unity, KDE, or Gnome) The panels appear to be functioning correctly, though my workspaces got smashed as well.
Edit: Upon closer inspection, I can no longer add workspaces, I set the number of workspaces to 4, but it only shows one in the list below
Edit 2: Upon creating a new user to mess with themes, the WM was working fine in the new user, same problems in this user.

I have this machine (motherboard ITX Jetaway NF94-270-LF based on CPU Atom N270, full specs here) as a server for some time now (about 4 years). Debian 8.1 is installed on it.
Two days ago, after a power failure, the machine was not able to complete the boot process. I attached a keyboard and a monitor (on VGA port, the motherboard also as a DVI one, but I don't have a suitable monitor) to be able to see what's happening and interact with the machine. Unluckily, at a certain point during the booting sequence the screen goes blank and the monitor goes in standby mode; apart from that, the boot process continues in the background.
As far as I can recall, this behaviour existed for at least a couple of years (if not from the beginning) and the boot process was always completed successfully until two days ago.
The screen goes blank after the setup of the keyboard mapping. I tried everything to avoid the screen going blank: in the Grub menu I set the "vga" parameter, the "nomodeset" parameter, the grub_gfxmode parameter, I removed the "quiet" option, I removed the "load_video" line, I forced the BIOS to only use the VGA port for the video and so on, in order to disable or configure differently the video and the framebuffer. All these stuff had no effect at all: the screen keeps going blank at the same point during the boot process.
The only way I was able to use a fully booted system through keyboard and monitor was via the rescue mode of the Debian 8.1 netinst image. But that way, of course, I wasn't able to observe the normal boot process. So, I checked the boot parameters of the rescue mode and I found that the only usefull parameter was "vga", which I already used and was ineffective.

On a new Lenovo Thinkpad T450s, I encounter the following issue: The USB drive containing live CD image ("burned" to the USB using mkusb tool --> which in turn uses dd) cannot be booted from the UEFI boot loader. I have to reconfigure the hardware (BIOS) setup to support both UEFI & legacy system, and with first boot priority given to legacy (BIOS-style) booting. But if I do this, I don't see the UEFI system in the /sys/firmware/uefi directory. I am using the 64-bit live CD image (debian-live-8.0.0-amd64-xfce-desktop.iso).
This is my goal: to boot the live USB from UEFI, so that I can install it in a form that is UEFI-bootable.

When I first started running Jessie 8.1 I noticed that after the disk check the boot was quiet, ie. no messages to the terminal . However, something has happened and now when I boot the machine I get a verbose listing of all the processes being started. Is there a way to change it back to the way it was? In other words a quiet boot. The only thing I know of that has been 'anomalous' behavior is the other day when doing a mp4 to avi conversion, using avconv, I apparently had an over temp condition which closed my LXDE session and brought me to the login prompt. Don't know what other info one may need but feel free to ask for more, if necessary.

I'm using debian 8 on a notebook and since I tried to get the wifi working (another story...) I wanted to unload and load the alx driver module. So I used rmmod alx and when I tried to reload with modprobe, it didn't find the device (not the module). So I rebooted and now the notebook won't start. There's just the emrgency mode, so I log in as root and journalctl -xb gives me some erros:
Code: Select allsystemd-modules-load.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.Unit systemd-mdoules-load.service entered failed state. Then it fails to start the modules ip, ppdev, parport_pc and fuse.Next error is
Code: Select allboot-efi.mount mount process exited, code=exited, status=32
Failed to mount /boot/efi.Followed by
Code: Select allDependency failed for Local File System.
And last but not least
Code: Select allFailed at step EXEC spawning /bin/plymouth: No such file or directory.
There was also an error at the first time "Failed to load autofs4", so loaded it manually with modprobe. As this worked, I opened the /etc/modules - which was empty, don't know whethere it was also empty before or not - and wrote autofs4 in the file. autofs4 seems to load succesfully, so I tried writing also ip, ppdev, parport_pc and fuse, but I just get the error for these last four twice... But lsmod shows some loaded modules (autofs4, ext4, crc16, mbcache, also alx and say 15 more). You should also know that I use an extra boot partition and use EFI.
