Debian Configuration :: Samba Share No Longer Auto-mounting In Wheezy

May 1, 2011

I upgraded my testing/Wheezy Inspiron N5010 to 2.6.38-2-amd64 recently (along with a bunch of other updates, of course) and now my Samba network share is no longer automatically mounting, I have to open a root terminal and do a "mount /mountpoint"; my relevant /etc/fstab entry:

I've tried over options, as well, but it isn't automatically mounting. Any suggestions (including where to file a bug report)?

Debian Hardware :: Android Phone No Longer Mounting Since Wheezy -> Jessie

Aug 7, 2015

Used to be, when I connected my phone and turned on USB Storage, it would automount, and I'd get a popup window asking me what I wanted to do (open and view files, or import photos with gthumb). I would just choose open and view files, move photos, music, etc. back and forth...

I would see the device listed in pcmanfm or thunar. Now, nothing happens. I do not get the popup, nor see the device in any file manager, etc. When I do fdisk -l, I do not see the phone listed, but when I do lsusb, I do see it.

Code: Select allBus 008 Device 067: ID 0482:0734 Kyocera Corp.
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

It's a Kyocera Hydro Elite, an android device, set for USB Mass Storage upon connection. The phone knows when it's been connected and gives me the option to turn on the mass storage, which used to trigger the popup on the computer, but the computer no longer responds.

I have thunar-volman and mtp-tools installed.

I don't seem to have any relevant entry in /etc/fstab. Not sure if I did before upgrading to jessie from wheezy or not... I don't believe so...don't think an upgrade would wipe anything from there.

Why I'm not getting access to the phone now? Or how I can mount it without knowing it's location from fdisk? I do not use gnome, but rather plain openbox.

Debian Configuration :: Mounting A Remote Sshfs Share?

Apr 2, 2011

I have two remote systems which I have fstab entries for on the local system. I have them set to noauto, because mount fails during boot for some reason, but that's not the problem. For years I've mounted them in rc.local.

The problem is after I recently reinstalled Debian, when I mount them manually it always asks for my user's password. I've copied my user's pub key from the local to the remote system and put it in the user authorized_keys file (not root), like I always have. But it still asks for a password, and so fails to mount in rc.local.

Debian Configuration :: Auto Syncing Folder With Windows Share?

Aug 10, 2010

I use Debian Squeeze on my laptop, and in my office we have a WinXP box where we store all our documents and stuff. When I'm in the office, I can directly mount my directory to edit documents, and at home/wherever I can use VPN to connect to the box so it's no problem again.

However: I'd like to know if there is a way to set up a directory on my laptop, that I can use even when offline, and then when I'm connected to the office computer, it automatically syncs with it.

Fedora :: USB Drives No Longer Auto Mounting?

Sep 16, 2010

I know this problem was mentioned here before but because I could not find a straight forward solution anywhere I am reposting this here. So here goes.As of today, my Fedora 13 64-bit has ceased to auto-mount USB drives completely. I have made absolutely no changes to the system and I am completely baffled and frustrated by this sudden development. I desperately need this system to function properly as I use it for school and this really put a wrench in my works, especially since I have done nothing to cause this. I assume that one of the many recent updates that have been released must have done this, but I have absolutely no idea how to fix this. Why do Fedora developers release updates that cripple a perfectly functioning system is beyond me and crap like this really makes me consider switching back to Ubuntu.

Debian Configuration :: Accessing Samba Share From Xfce

I currently have a Samba share on a Debian 7 system. This share was only ever used by Windows systems on the network.

I just finished setting up a Debian 8 system with Xfce, and now I would like to connect to the share. I already installed gvfs-backends and gvfs-bin. When I go to Thunar file manager, and click browse network, I'm presented with a "Windows Network" shortcut. When clicked it says: Failed to open "Windows Network". Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory.

Debian Configuration :: Access Remote Samba Share Gigolo Way

I've got a fresh Wheezy/Xfce install.I'm trying to access a remote samba share the gigolo way. It is an external USB hard drive connected to my router. I can access it read only using the following URL with Icedove: smb://bbox/

Anyway, this is just to try and give might-be-useful information, but ultimately, I don't really want to use fusesmb. I would rather have the gigolo way working, allowing local network shares browsing, auto-connect, etc.

Debian Configuration :: File Share Unavailable From A Reboot Until Restart Samba

Jul 3, 2011

I am having slight issue with setting up file sharing. I have a windows 7 pc and hp proliant microserver running. I have a raid array which I am using as a share for storing music, pictures etc. When I reboot the debian server I can't connect to the server from the windows 7 PC (I have mapped a network drive) until I go on to the server and restart samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart - then everything works fine. I can ping the server with both ip and hostname but the network drive does not connect - this is straight after a reboot. Is the /etc/init.d/samba restart doing something differently to when the server boots? I have read several posts relating to printer sharing issues which point to samba not starting before cups so I am wondering if samba is starting before some of the relevant networking services.

Debian Configuration :: Slow Transfer Speeds On SAMBA Share But Gigabit Speed On SCP

Feb 12, 2016

I'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab

When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s

But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can No Longer Connect To WHS Samba Share

Jun 1, 2011

I'm running 10.10 on a pretty fresh install with a brand new system I built especially for Ubuntu. For some reason, I'm beginning to have trouble with accessing my Samba shares from this computer. I have a Windows Home Server also running on my network and I have to be able to access the files on it.At first Nautilus showed "SERVER" in the folder tree when I clicked on "Network" and everything was working great. A couple of days ago my WHS "SERVER" suddenly no longer showed up in Nautilus and I had to mount the WHS server manually (via "Connect to Server...").

Now, today, even that doesn't work. When I try to mount manually I get the error "Failed to Retrieve Share List from Server". I can now no longer access the WHS from Ubuntu at all.Why has my ability to access the Samba shares on my WHS deteriorated over time to the point where I can't access them at all?? Any ideas?I have other systems on this network (Mac and Windows) and none of the others have any problems at all with the WHS. Re-booting WHS and router has no effect. I've changed nothing in my set-up. Is this update related?

The problem is not firewall, as no problem messages, and the Samba log is vacant.

When using this command, and I give the password:

In dmesg on the client I get:

And on the server I get nothing in dmesg or samba logs. And no logfile is created for the client machine in /var/log/samba. I can ssh over to driveway on the server just fine.

I used to use Samba, although it's been a long time, since I discovered sshfs.

Ubuntu :: Auto Mount A NAS Samba Share

But so far I've had no luck in auto mounting a samba shared resource as local.

Can anyone point me to a definitive tutorial, or provide an explanation on how I might accomplish auto mounting samba shares?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Network Share Mounting ?

Oct 8, 2010

I have 2 Ubuntu machines: a desktop in my bedroom, and a laptop.

I have my music shared on my desktop machine, and can access it through the network menu item in the nautilus manager, but I want the files from the share to be mounted on the disk so I can access it through the commandline.

If I right-click the shared folder in Nautilus, it says its location is smb://rob/music

If I do:

mount -t smbfs //rob/music /mnt/music, it tells me that it cant locate rob.

So I try "ping rob" and that doesn't work.

I can't make a hosts entry for rob which happens at this moment to be 192.168.0.8, because my router assigns different IP addresses to various machines at different times, and I cant seem to find a way to make static maps from MAC address to ip address.

So, how come nautilus can see my samba share on the machine "rob", but the mount commands cannot?

I have my internet site on CentOS 5.1 with a Apache - Mysql - PHP web server. I have to mount my directory on a share in /mnt/catalogueimages and made a symbolic link from my /var/www/html/mysite/catimages to this samba share.

This is what I do following your guide a this link: [URL]
I have placed in my /etc/fstab this line:
//SERVER/C/Catalogue /mnt/catalogueimages cifs user,username=Administrator,password=,uid=apache,gid=apache 0 0
My Windows 2000 server have no password.

After that I made the symbolic link:
ln -s /mnt/catalogueimages /var/www/html/mysite/catimages
All it's OK.

The problem is that I can't see the images via browser. I have tried also to put some images in the directory /mnt/catalogueimages, deleting the mount point, in order to see if the problem was in apache: the images are visible via browser. Why I don't reach to see the images mounted with samba?

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy No Longer Recognises Monitor After Reboot

Sep 11, 2014

I have installed no updates and made no changes to configuration in any way. Computer has been left on for some time. Finally rebooted to clear any caches. When it came up again the system does not recognise the monitor. So I get the default resolution. Not hardware as a windows install comes up fine.

Using Wheezy with MATE
Running on Haswell
Installed backport to stop crash on exit 3.13-0.bpo.1-amd64

I have tried several versions of live CD. These all give the same symptom - which is why I tried the windows install. So I suspect this is something to do with recognising the onboard graphics in Haswell.

I have googled and found, however, means using a shell script. This seems rather drastic and I don't want to go that way unless there is no other possiblity of a solution. In that post the output of xrandr is posted so doing the same here.

Code: Select all xrandr -q --verbose

Ubuntu Networking :: Mounting A Samba Share On Two Machines - Can't Place Anything Into The Folder

Apr 24, 2011

I'm having some trouble mounting a Samba share on my two Ubuntu machines. The Samba share is setup so that all files are readable and writable by everyone (it's only accessible via the local network). When I create a new folder on the share with either of my Ubuntu machines, the folder becomes non-writable by anyone ie. I can't place anything into the folder. I'm using the following command to mount the share:

I think the problem is with the way I'm mounting the share on my Ubuntu machines. If I go to the share using smb://192.168.1.160 in a file browser, I can create new folders which are readable and writable by everyone. But, if I create the new folder where it's mounted at /mnt/backup, no-one can modify or change it.

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy 7.8 With LXDE Desktop - Task Bar Volume Control No Longer Functions

Feb 11, 2015

Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.

I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.

Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

* more or less solved. still not exactly what I want but it works, mostly.

Debian Configuration :: Kernel 2.6.38 In Wheezy?

Apr 11, 2011

This is Wheezy x86_64. I tried two different ways to install kernel 2.6.38 on my machine and both have failed. First thing I did was to follow this guide [URL]... el-26.html) and try to compile the latest stable from kernel.org. I don't know why, but it turns into kernel panic when I try to run it. Second thing I did was to install the liquorix 2.6.38, and that also fails, seeming to boot but hanging a second short from the login. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Is there a special way to install kernels in Debian? This is the first time I tried compiling a kernel, so it's quite likely that the problem is sitting 6 inches from the computer screen. Also, how would I remove those kernels since they're obviously not working? I know I could remove them from the grub menu but I'm not sure how to completely delete them.
