Debian Configuration :: Popcon Mail Notification Fails?
Mar 5, 2011
I would like to use debian's popularity contest utility as I think it's an important tool for the developers and packagers, but it seems to be broken. I received the following notification after a recent full-upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze:
From MAILER-DAEMON Thu Nov 18 19:14:25 2010
Envelope-to: root@mediacenter.local
Delivery-date: Thu, 18 Nov 2010 19:14:25 +0200
X-Failed-Recipients: survey@popcon.debian.org
Auto-Submitted: auto-replied
I cannot get exim4 to actually deliver any "local delivery only; not on a network".But whatever I do in the config, all mail gets frozen with entries in the log file like:"root@empty R=nonlocal: Mailing to remote domains not supported"Maybe the problem is that there is no fqdn for the computer (and will never be). How can I enable local mail delivery?
I recentlty did a new install and the printer icon no longer shows up in the notification area when printing....I cannot figure out what is missing or did they omit this...
I would like to run a mailing daemon on my system that would receive incoming mail and forwards it to my Gmail account. I have no experience in mail services and forwarding mail at all. where to start reading and/or look for clues?
i need to install a mail server with the following requirements: smtp, imap, web administration interface (users management to be done by a non-specialist) and ... to be easy enough to install/implement on debian (this is one time deal for me ...)
i used until now Xmail, phpxmail and nocc, very easy to install and it was working flawlessly, but unfortunately nocc is a too poor webmail client be cause is based only on pop3 literally the requirement is that on the web[client] mails sent must be saved and from what i see on webmail that only can be done with imap and (this is the big problem) Xmail does not support imap so i cannot install a good webmail client
Linux [URL] 2.6.26-2-686 #1 SMP Wed Feb 10 08:59:21 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux Currently I have exim4 configured to use my mail server as a relay to send php emails. Though I dont think I want this setup. My goal is to be able to track emails sent out to make sure that nothing happened and they got bounced back. I need to be able to find the emails that are bounced.
If I configure exim4 to send emails from the current (apache2 / php) server any emails that bounce will end up there, correct? We have clients that are expecting emails and are complaining they do not always get them so something is not 100% configured correctly. I am going to re-run #dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
i have installed opensuse 11.3 on my PC. i want to display pop up message when new mail arrives. For that, i have installed mail-notification 5.4 ( which requires libnotify-0.4.4). while building mail-notification,it shows the following error . "src/mn-evolution-folder-tree-server.gob:26:33: fatal error: mail/mail-component.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. command failed."
I installed the "mail notification" applet from synaptic and I like it best because it monitors multiple email accounts, something I find hard to find. I do have one question though, how do I get it to start up with every gnome session?
I can't get rid of the "Mail Notification Properties" Window at startup. Every time the system comes up, there is the window for the settings. It's just empty as I don't want any more mail notifications than Thunderbird has.
I looked into the Mail Notification Properties and haven't found any settings to get rid of the window. And I disabled "Mail Notification" in System > Preferences.
Still this window keeps coming back over and over again.
It even survived the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. How can I get rid of it?
I use the Gnome Mail Notification Applet and have recently moved from a wired desktop machine to a wireless laptop.
The problem I have is that the Mail Notification shows an error because it tries to check mail immediately, the network hasn't finished connecting at this time though.
Is there a way to add a delay to this? I can't see one.
Or if anyone can suggest an alternative that is just as good (or better) and allows for a delay?
anyone knows how to setting email reminder and privacy when sent email.
This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use by or information of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. If you are not the intended recipient, you are notified that disclosing, copying, distributing or taking any action based on the contents of this information is strictly prohibited. If you have received this email in error or is not the intended recipient, please notify the sender by return email and delete this e-mail (together with any files transmitted with it) immediately. i want this reminder will automatically sent when user sent their email without need to write this reminder. means all email sent by user will display that reminder when email opened
It's hard to understand the whole systemd stuff. Specially in combination with mdadm and sendmail. My goal is to get a mail every boot about the state of the RAID. Also get a mail when someone is wrong with the RAID while my computer is running. How I can reach this target I don't care especially. It just has to be a Debian package and stable
OK, to the story: I made a while ago an dist-upgrade from wheezy to jessie. Before, everything works fine. I boot my computer, the RAID gets checked and a mail was sent to my email-address with the state of my RAID and the disks of it. For this I followed a HowTo from [URL] .... After the upgrade, I dont get a mail anymore.
Here some details.
Actually installed: Debian 8.2 Jessie
Code: Select allsystemctl status mdadm-raid -l ● mdadm-raid.service - LSB: MD array assembly Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid) Active: active (exited) since Son 2015-10-11 16:11:34 CEST; 21min ago Process: 281 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Code: Select allecho "This is a test e-mail from my server using msmtp" | msmtp -d xyz@gmx.net or Code: Select allmdadm --monitor --scan --test --oneshot
Everything works. I get the mails like I need it. In my opinion it's not a problem of the mail configuration. It seems, there is no network when the RAID get's started and the mails want to be send.
What I'm wondering is also, that obviously the
/etc/default/mdadm is ignored by systemd and only the /lib/systemd/system/mdmonitor.service is executed. But while booting the RAID get's startet with /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid and this should read the /etc/default/mdadm. Right? Confusing!
Anyway, is there a way, how I can easy change the order (without any side-effects) of the startup for the network and the RAID. I can't figure out, which unit I have to change, that it will work. Or maybe is there another solution? Like I mentioned, it's just have to work with Debian stable packages
There are various units who sounds nice, but wich one is the correct one?
I would like to discuss setting up a mail server and its implications and alternatives. First, let us see if I have understood this correctly: A mail server consists of many different components. First, a server to listen to any mail inbound for a specific domain (say postfix), and then a POP3/IMAP server (say dovecot). Then, I should somehow configure the rules by which all mail is forwarded to their respective owners. This should be fairly simple by using debians package managers and dselect or whatever program it is that sets up right packages by use cases at the install.
But now lets assume a more complicated environment, where there are multiple users with different domains and needs. First, we need to send mail to ourselves from webapps for instance for backup purposes. So let's say we have a domain called domain.com setup, and we want to send mail to backup@domain.com. Unfortunately, some configuration issue makes the application get confused, because it is trying to send mail to itself, but doesn't quite understand what it should do. How can this problem can be solved?
Second, how could I configure different domains with different rules. For instance, if I want one domain to have a catch-all account, where random email sent to erroneous accounts is captured? Or if I want to create accounts which are not based on actual Debian accounts, but instead just random usernames (say, danny@domain.com, mike@domain.com, support@domain.com etc.)?
Finally, which are the best web-guis for doing such configuration? What if the customer wants to himself add accounts? I cannot require him to edit text files - especially if he can thus break the whole configuration for other customers as well.. postfix-admin is one, but it is quite crude-looking. Is there something which integrates both postfix, apache and dovecot configuration? How about Webmin?
I run a mailserver and this is bothering me quite abit. Being going on for about a month now. Running exim4 and dovecot with exim4u. This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

I run OSX on my everyday computer so this is not me sending out stuff since the above mail says Microsoft Outlook express has sent it (?) Running a Debian Squeeze server. And I really dont get any other spam due to exim4u setup and spamassasin.
I've been installing multiple versions of ubunutu over years and now I better understand why I faced always problems with wifi configuration on these different baselines : Debian root of course.
Now on Debian 7.4 : The Broadcom BCM4313 driver is not loaded by default (not free product) for my wifi card. This is stated thru the UNCLAIMED declaration
I've just installed lenny from dvd, and am just settling in. I'm curious about virtual machines. so I've installed xen. With xen comes qemu by default. Now the setup I've recently become familiar with is Suse-11 which is quite slick. In Suse, Yast provides a distribution prepared virtual management section for xen, including an installer. Debian's setup is similar but not a clone. I want to try out the installer. Aside from the differences, debian has a screaming deficit. On booting dom0 in Lenny, if fails to get into gnome, badly. I can tell what's probably wrong, but I need to fix it. Now I'm also a gentoo fan and very practised at posting queries, so here goes.
Debian's config for X is somewhat unhelpful. The xorg.conf just states Configured device and configured monitor for its components. If it expanded on just what the settings were it would help. What I have is a frambuffer driver not loadinf or being implemented.
I have squeeze using the default setup with 5 seperate partitions on hard drive. All other updates are fine but it will not install the Linux-Image-2.6.32-5-amd64. I get message that not enough room. I think this is the kernal update. I use update manager. Is there a fix for this short of resizing the partition. This is a one computer/user setup. I had this problem on a previous install of stable and ignored it thinking that it was a glitch. That install was an experimental setup and I liked it but it didn't work on the internet very well so went to testing.
I have happily been booting debian through grub2 by chain loading it with efi (rEFIt), until today, and now get to begin another learning experience I've been using linux for a while, and kept seeing the guides for splitting up /, /var, /tmp, /usr, and /home, into different partitions, so I did just that when I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (I've realized that this was a little bit pointless because I formated them all as ext4, but at least it acts as a safety for mission critical drives when I overfill /home. I unfortunately didn't give /tmp enough space, and it kept crashing SimpleScan so I decided to use gparted to resize it.
The operation went alright as far as I can tell, and was straight forward because there was some free space behind it so I only had to append the partition. I synced the master boot record through rEFIt as usual, but when I booted the linux partition grub did load, and only a blank screen is presented. I eventually figured out I could use the gparted live cd to boot back into debian, and have been screwing around for a while with grub commands trying to figure out how to allow rEFIt to successfully boot GRUB on its own again. I ran grug-mkconfig to replace my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file and have rebooted but that did not help.
I tried reinstalling grub and grub-common with apt-get, but I didn't purge configuration settings for fear of losing something important. My current focus is on the command grub-install. I think i just need to run this command with the /boot device, like su - root; grub-install /dev/sda1 or some thing like that. wipe out the MBR on /dev/sda1, or screw up what good configuration is left in grub, so I want to make sure that I'm using the right /dev. Currently the gparted output looks like this:
/dev/sda1: fat32 - GPT (gpt from fdisk, gparted shows EFI with the boot flag) /dev/sda2: hfs+ - MacOSx /dev/sda3: ext4 - /root
[code]...
how the gnome live gparted disk would have been able to boot. I have access to a hard drive so I'll probably end up making backup images of as many of the partitions as I can, and then try more drastic bashing around, but if anyone has any suggestions/wisdom they could offer while I'm researching solutions I'd appreciate it. I eventually want to try to axe my osx partition and boot directly from GRUB2-EFI so I figure it is worth the investment in time to get to know grub a little bit more intimately.
My debian machine works fine other that it loses network after a few (12 or so) hours. The dhclient manages to renew the DHCP lease the first time, after a few hours, but later when it tries again the modem gives a DHCPNAK. If I understood correctly, this should make the dhclient to fetch a new ip address but it does nothing. I am no expert so I don't know if the cause is the modem box or the debian. There are other (windows) machines connected to the modem box which work fine. The machines are behind NAT.
The debian machine does not currently have a display or a graphics card so it's difficult to start messing with the settings. I've considered having a static ip but I don't understand why the dynamic address doesn't work. What is weird is that it worked fine for several weeks and suddenly started failing. I was running a minecraft server (hehe) with an uptime of several weeks. At first I though it was a hardware issue because I thought the whole computer froze but instead it just drops the connection and I can no longer reach it with SSH or anything. My timezone is UTC+3, /etc/default/rcS has UTC=yes, I believe it is the reason why the lease and the logs differ by three hours. The machine is only running apache2+mysql+php5, GDM is stopped.I'm trying to post as much info I can. Here is the ifconfig output when the connection is working for the wired connection:
I have just upgraded to F11 (from F9) and most things work pretty well. I can't read DVDs or CDs but I see there is another thread open on that, and VMWare-player has a few problems but otherwise I an a reasonably happy camper. The "new mail notification" in Evolution won't play my sound. Other sound apps work OK (mplayer, amarok etc) and I can play the .wav file in question simply by hovering the mouse over it in Nautilus - so I know it's not a general sound problem (and besides - I have followed Silpheed2k's guide here). In the Evolution plugins dialogue the sound file is selected, but the test button doesn't play it and when new mail arrives the other notification methods (pop up message + blinking icon) work just fine. It worked in F9 with the same sound file.
I've been using mail-notification from the repos for ages to monitor my gmail account with no problems. Since I upgraded to Karmic, it's been popping up an irritating dialog window whenever a new mail arrives (as well as the standard notification). how to turn it off without losing all notifications?
I have mail-notification installed (using Lucid beta) but for some reason it doesn't send notifications using libnotify, but instead shows a standard gtk pop-up. I have the evolution plugin for mail-notification installed, and in fact the issue is not related to evolution, since I tried setting up mail-notification directly for an IMAP account and got the same ugly pop-up.
I've had Mail Notification installed for awhile, but was disappointed by the fact that it tries to check for e-mail before my computer can even establish an internet connection (and then never checks again), forcing me to manually start the program after every boot (an issue others have reported as well).
As a result, I removed the program via Ubuntu Software Center, and tried using cGmail (which I've used before, without issue), only to encounter a bug. I then uninstalled cGmail, and installed Mail Notification again. However, as soon as I started Mail Notification, I noticed that it still had all of my preferences, including my previous e-mail account, saved.
How is this possible? I tried removing it via Ubuntu Software Center, and then again with Synaptic---but still, if I reinstall it, the settings are all still there. I want to completely remove Mail Notification, and all of its settings (even if I decide to eventually install it again), but now am confused as to how to do this.
I have a gmail account. After I installed ubuntu 11.04 cannot use "mail notification" properly. the pop-up windows is like an error in the middle of the screen (instead of the classic and attractive window reside on the right-up screen).
I'm currently working with Nagios Core 3.2.2 and I'm trying to set up a mail notification.
My current settings:

I have 2 problems:
I'm getting mail that the PC is OK every 3 minutes.
And I don't know what I should config in Service and host .cfg. Sow that I will get a good description of the problem in the mail that Nagios is sending me.
I am using: Code: Ubuntu 10.4 2.6.32-21-generic Evolution 2.83.3
I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.4. I have checked the properties in Mail preferences: Code: Play sound - yes Display a notification - yes Indicate new messages in panel - yes
Is there a way to disable the "New Mail" notification when we are logged in via ssh? It is causing some issues while we are working on stuff on our servers.
The problem I have is so simple yet difficult for me to resolve. My Postfix MTA allow fake mails from me@example.com to me@example.com. How can I block them?
For example, if I do "telnet smtp.mail.yahoo.it 25", as I write the MAIL FROM command I get the alert "Authentication required". How can I achieve that?
Could anyone point me to some simple articles that explain what email encryption is and how to set up a mail server (e.g. Exim) that can send secure emails? I know nothing about networks, mail servers, encryption, etc., but I have to be an expert on it before I walk into work tomorrow morning.
