Does anyone know how to delete or disable kickoff menu items? I need to disable or delete the SLEEP and HIBERNATE menus as they don't function properly causing the system to crash.
I searched the internet and local configuration files without success.
i got this problem new item on my desktop and menu's such as files folders new installed application will not appear unless i go to Nautilus and click on reload. i had a clean ubuntu 10.4 on my system and regular programs that i install from ubuntu software center.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAlright, I was playing with the VPN capabilities in KDE4 on Squeeze AMD64 on my personal laptop (see my signature) and found it very easy to create a VPN connection and connect, but that's it. I made a VPN tunnel to one of my client locations as a test, but could use rdesktop to get into the server. Then I realized I couldn't ping the server either. I also lost all ability to browse the web and everything while the VPN was up. Upon checking ifconfig as root, I saw that it created "ppp0" and hat it had pulled an IP from the client network, but all of my networking capabilities were gone. What gives? What is it that I am missing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Wheezy 7.9, Gnome Classic, gdm3 . I have two menu instances of Master PDF Editor, one instance in the Graphics menu and the other in the Office category. I have tried using Alacarte to remove one of the instances. Alacarte shows that the item has been removed but in fact it still shows up in the menu. The procedure I used was to open Alacarte as root user, delete the item, close Alacarte and re-start the computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI updated today and naturally removed the old nVidia driver, compiled it again after a reboot, and then rebooted again for good measure. I can log into KDE4, but all I get is a cursor and a solid black background. I deleted the ~/.kde, ~/.local, and quite a few other directories from my normal user account using the shell so KDE would reconfigure my settings when I logged in again, but it's the same problem. I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and added the "Compositing" section with "Enabled=false" to rule out compositing. Now when I log into the system I get the default KDE4 wallpaper and a mouse cursor, but nothing else. I believe the latest update broke KDE4, or am I missing something? I have recreated my xorg.conf as well, and only set it to use the nVidia driver. So what can I do now?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for quite some time now and my context menu has become cluttered with a lot of applications that I don't use or menu items that I have never used - and most likely won't use.
So I want to remove them, or at least disable them.
So, after searching Google (irrelevant or old results) so then I tried Google with [URL] but nobody has had their problem solved.
Edit: I've looked through GConf-Editor, found nothing, and have looked through the directories .Cache/.Config/.Local/.Nautilus in my home diretory and nothing came up of relevance in the first three and the .Nautilus directory was empty.
When I was using Ubuntu 10.10 I was able to add menus, edit and delete them from the main menu by right clicking on the menu and selecting Edit menus [URL]. After installing Ubuntu 11.04, I found that I can't add, edit or delete any menu. Any one knows how to add, edit and delete menus from the main menu?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running debian unstable and since there was the switch to dependency based boot I can no longer control my boot services.I used to suppress the services that I use rarely during boot with: sudo update-rc.d -f myservice remove This arranged the links in /etc/rc?.d and everything worked.
Now this command only says: update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing.This seems to work until I upgrade the service to a new version and it is enabled again.Do you have any idea of how to disable boot services permanently with the new system?

I've been using Debian since the early days of Lenny being testing as OS on the same Computer. Its a Acer Aspire Notebook with switches for wireless and bluetooth. While booting Lenny my wireless and bluetooth stayed off as long as I didn't switch them on. But since squeeze they get activated ( you can see it by looking at the LED's ) the moment after the grub screen. I now do have to turn bluetooth and wireless off by hand everytime which is quite annoying since I mostly use eth0.
how to disable bluetooth and wireless per default in a way I can simply turn them back on by using the switch?
So from a web server stand point if we start using swap for httpd or mysql its bad and performance goes down the drain. So would it be a good or bad idea to disable swap entirely?

All alsa beeps and system sounds are disabled and/or muted. I also tried setterm -blength 0, xset -b in startup scripts. They disable terminal-beeps, but not the halt or the gdm login beep. I tried wasting around with the gconftool, but nothing happened. It is an annoying sound. If you use, init 0 to shut down, no beep comes up.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a printer connected locally to my Debian box. It runs fine via cupsd.I am also running a Windows 2003 VMware guest which I would like to use the printer (use as a local printer, not a network printer).
VMware offers a connection via USB, so it should work. The printer I have plugged locally into the Debian host is recognised by the Windows 2003 guest, but it won't print. I get an error message saying that the printer is still connected to the host OS, and that I need to remove (or presumably disable) the host driver before the guest can use the printer.
So how can I find out which printer driver/module is being used by the Debian host to connect to this printer? And what is the best way to temporarily disable it, while my VMware guest is running?
I'm installing a non-X server using squeeze 32bit netinst iso, expert installation. I don't know that I can specify "debian-installer/framebuffer=false" during the installation, after reboot I got a framebuffer display with console fonts smaller and fonts look like ubuntu. I search around I can edit GRUB config for the resolution items or disable framebuffer. How can I disable the framebuffer (use normal text system fonts) when booting in LILO?

I just installed kubuntu lucid on my notebook. Every time I plug in a thumb drive, the device actions popup gives me two options - load in file manager and use gwenview importer.
I want to get rid of the gwenview importer option.
I went into System Settings->Advanced->Device Actions and found the entry for Download photos with gwenview. It can't be deleted (at least as a regular user). I tried modifying it and then deleting it, but the gwenview entry was still there afterward.
