CentOS 5 :: Vsock: No Version For "VMCIDatagram_Send" Found: Kernel Tainted?
Sep 18, 2009
I upgraded form CentOS 5.2 to CentOS 5.3 and from VMware Server 2.0.0 to VMware Server 2.0.1 all work fine, but during boot when VMCI is loaded I've got the following message:kernel: vsock: no version for "VMCIDatagram_Send" found: kernel tainted. What does it mean? Have I to worry about it?

I can install VMware Server 2.0.1 on CentOS 5.3 (32-bit and 64-bit) perfectly. However, I can't access Server's web interface by going to port 8222 on the machine's IP address. When CentOS 5.3 (32 or 64-bit) is loading, I am greeted with this message "VM communication interface socket family: vsock: no version for "VMCIDatagram_Send" found: kernel tainted." I assume this is the reason why I can't access my Server through a web browser. How do I correct this? Is there a package I need to install on CentOS prior to installation of Server 2.0.1?
It's strange, because I can install 2.0.1 on Ubuntu Server 8.10 with absolutely no problem and access its web interface. So I think this might be a CentOS-specific issue I've uncovered.

I have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

I just ran "yum update" to download the latest kernel from the repository, and noticed that it's 2.6.18-164.11.1 while the latest on www.kernel.org is 2.6.32.4.Out of curiosity, why is there such a discripency between the two? Lack of resources to test and build binaries?

I want a new kernel RPM in my custom CentOS 5 kickstart distro. I built the kernel, got a nice kernel RPM out, and replaced it in my ks.cfg. The install goes fine until the very end, where Anaconda prints some spurious stuff about mkinitrd failing.I get why it might fail -the kernel version argument to mkinitrd was no doubt for the old kernel. But I have no idea where this is -it's not in the ks.cfg afaict, and so I don't quite get where Anaconda / mkinitrd gets it from.
I'd eventually like to use this kernel for the installer as well, but I think I understand that process much better. How do I tell kickstart / Anaconda / mkinitrd to use the new kernel version number?

I have recently set up a CENTOS server using the kernel 2.6.18-164.el5xen (x64 5.4 Install I believe). Originally I set it up with Xen to becasue I was goig to create the odd VM on it, however I no longer need to do this.Further, I believe I am having networking issues due to the installation of Xen. The machine cannot seem to locate any network addresses (eg websites) unless I put in a hosts entry for them. I believe this networking issue would be easier to rectify if the virtual networking interfaces for Xen were not installed but to do this requires a Kernel replacement. Im not experienced with doing this and the machine is located remotely to me and I dont have the original install CD available. How would I go about replacing the kernel to the non Xen version if I dont have the install CDs?

I have a weird problem with one of my servers (normal PC hardware). I was connected remotely using Putty, doing some stuff, and all of the sudden some commands, like "ls" stopped working, giving a "file or command not found" type of message. I restarted the ssh session, only to find out I couldn't log on any more (access denied). When I got home and rebooted the system, I was greeted with this:Booting 'CentOS (2.6.18-194.el5xen)'root (hd0,0)Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83kernel /boot/xen.gz-2.6. 18-194.el5Error 15: File not foundPress any key to continue...Then I searched about this, found out that the files in /boot/grub/menu.lst did not exist at the specified location (/boot/xen.gz-2.6. 18-194.el5). Somehow I managed to find them in another place, copied them in place, and now I get:Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

The RHEL 4 update 7 installation CD installs the kernel with version 2.6.9-78.EL and therefore must contain corresponding vmlinuz and initrd.img. However I would like to have an all modules initrd that is used during installation but for a different version (2.6.9-78.0.13.EL). Is there a way in which I could obtain/make such an initrd?

At the moment I am using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

I am trying to install the Nvidia Quadro NVS 110 169.04 drivers but am having issues during install. Prior to attempting my install I did install the kernel-devel rpm so it can compile. after running the RPM I get. Quote: No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you like the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel from the NVIDIA ftp site [URL]?
which of course does not work. next it says Quote: "No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.. i hit okay and move on to. Quote: Error: Unable to find the kernel sources tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat linux systems, for example be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. if you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the "--kernel-source-path' command line option

Im am building a Linux distro. It will be very tiny and fast.
I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.
The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.
When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.
The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.
Quote:
Here is how the end of the kernelcomplie look like.
Quote:
Here is my init file who is the initrd/initramfs source.
Quote:
The initramfs folder contains "bin" (folder) and "init" a file. No more.
The problem is that the kernel cannot find/read init file.

New to fedora and a bit stuck atm. I got Fedora 11 installed ok and working fine. I then installed Oracle, Adobe Reader and Opera. All seemed to go ok. On booting the machine today, it booted fine, but when I click on places->computer or places-network or firefox or the file browser all I get is the arrow with the ring spinning around it for a bit and then nothing.
So, I tried to start up Firefox from a terminal and I get:
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 : version 'GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdcc+.so.6)
I get a few errors when I try and start opera, but one of them is the same as above. I tried nautilus - same thing. I'd be willing to bet it's the same for places->computer and places->network but I don't know how to start those up from the terminal. Part of the install instructions I followed have almost certainly caused it, but I don't know how to reverse them, this is what I did:
"unzip Oracle_Access_Manager10_1_4_0_1_linux_GCClib.zip
This gives you 2 files:
libgcc_s.so.1
libstdc++.so.5
Now move the libgcc_s.so.1 file to /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1
sudo mv libgcc_s.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1
And the most important one:
sudo ln -sf /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.so
(Even after the ldconfig command is given in the reboot fase, the link for /lib/libgcc_s.so remains!)
Then you have to rename the /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s.so to /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s_so
Otherwise /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 will be used in link and not /lib/libgcc_s.so, therefore the link will fail
Now you can start the installer by
./runInstaller.sh
And the linking will succeed."

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world
