i'm currently running centos 5 with kernel version 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 is there any way to update to kernel version >= 2.6.27 via yum ? if not via yum is it advisable to compile from source?

I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?
After new kernel update I noticed that I have 2 different versions of 1 kernel installed.
Kernels are:
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686.PAE (this one I use because previous kernels are all .PAE)
and
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586
Should I now expect any problems with later kernel releases or can I leave it this way? I boot in the .PAE kernel.
I am using OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I also use the Tumbleweed and Packman for Tumbleweed repositories. Accoording to uname -r, my current kernel version is 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop.

The most recent kernel update, to version 2.6.38-11 has been a horror. It hangs on boot up. Sometimes I can get to the log in screen, then it hangs there as well. However, after 3-5 reboots (which is absolutely annoying to do when I just want to use my computer), it sometimes loads up finally. However, if I go to older Linux version in the Grub menu, then I can select 2.6.38-10 and it runs just fine.
So I am looking for a way to fix this problem, whether it be removing the most recent kernel update, or making 2.6.38-10 boot up by default. I noticed that the kernels are listed in the synaptic package manager, but I am afraid to remove the most recent one via synaptic. Is it as simple as removing the Linux version and headers I don't want, or are there other things I need to do in order to make 2.6.38-10 my default kernel at start-up?
after update to kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 one of the 2 NIC's of my machine are only found at 1 of 4 reboots. Using the old one kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 all is fine. This are the to NIC's:
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 (rev 0c)
And the Intel one, makes the problems with the new kernel.
The server runs# uname -r2.6.18-128.4.1.el5However, today I executed yum update kernel*due to security advisory. I was just about to reboot the system when I realized that it runs VMWare Server Instance that will most likely fail to restart after kernel upgrade (I had a hard time fixing it after previous kernel update). Now I want to keep 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 after reboot.I see that new kernel is scheduled for booting:
# cat /etc/grub.conf

timeout=20

Currently I am running 2.6.18.10-1.el5 but I would like to go back to 2.6.18. I would like to know how this can be done via command line?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

Also i tried to do it from rpm files but it asked me for too many dependencies and i didn't know where to find some of them.

I just ran "yum update" to download the latest kernel from the repository, and noticed that it's 2.6.18-164.11.1 while the latest on www.kernel.org is 2.6.32.4.Out of curiosity, why is there such a discripency between the two? Lack of resources to test and build binaries?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want a new kernel RPM in my custom CentOS 5 kickstart distro. I built the kernel, got a nice kernel RPM out, and replaced it in my ks.cfg. The install goes fine until the very end, where Anaconda prints some spurious stuff about mkinitrd failing.I get why it might fail -the kernel version argument to mkinitrd was no doubt for the old kernel. But I have no idea where this is -it's not in the ks.cfg afaict, and so I don't quite get where Anaconda / mkinitrd gets it from.
I'd eventually like to use this kernel for the installer as well, but I think I understand that process much better.How do I tell kickstart / Anaconda / mkinitrd to use the new kernel version number?
I have recently set up a CENTOS server using the kernel 2.6.18-164.el5xen (x64 5.4 Install I believe). Originally I set it up with Xen to becasue I was goig to create the odd VM on it, however I no longer need to do this.Further, I believe I am having networking issues due to the installation of Xen. The machine cannot seem to locate any network addresses (eg websites) unless I put in a hosts entry for them. I believe this networking issue would be easier to rectify if the virtual networking interfaces for Xen were not installed but to do this requires a Kernel replacement. Im not experienced with doing this and the machine is located remotely to me and I dont have the original install CD available.How would I go about replacing the kernel to the non Xen version if I dont have the install CDs?

Is there an easy way to update Perl from repos or do I need to compile from source to get a newer version?

I'm trying to set-up MailScanner which requires a newer version of Perl IO than CentOS 5 appears to have in it's standard repos. I've also tried updating Perl from the rpmforge repo - but that just results in a bunch of transaction conflicts being reported by Yum. Is there another way of updating Perl from repos?
i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?

both are not working. I have to run the system using: 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5. Upon trying again #yum update it says that no packages are marked for update. Can I manually install the desired kernel? Do you know a reason why yum update is not automatically installing the proper kernel?
I had a Centos 5.5 system working great...and then due to crazy curiosity, installed the kernel update. Did this through the graphical interface, uncheck all update other than kernel. It downloaded, installed fine..After reboot now all I get is GRUB_ and then nothing else! I waited 3-4 minutes and had to shut down system. Have been googling around but thought I will post it here as well..When I boot with Win7 and use Ext2fsd to check, the boot folder is empty. Not sure if this is because ext2fsd does not read boot folder or it got wiped out by the yum upgrade process.

The kernel version we were at was 2.6.18-194.el5 and the update move us to 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5. I've done some googleing but I'm unable to work out exactly what I need to do. I'm guessing the new kernal is missing a module?
