I have access to a Corsair Voyager 16GB. Is 16GB enough and would the speed of it be enough?I have seen other drives such as the OCZ Rally 2 which have faster write and read speeds.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just tried Centos 5.2 Live starting from a 2 GB USB flash drive. Everything seems to run fine, fast, stable - except for that the persistent feature is not working. I created the USB from Windows using the Centos 5.2 LiveCD image and the current version of Live USB Creator (3.7), and declared a 256 MB persistent space.
This persistence feature had worked before with Fedora 11 but the system resulted unstable, kernel panic.... Now Centos has been solid for hours in a row... but the file where persistence should be reflected remains untouched with the initial creation timestamp. When rebooting, every change in config, file created etc gets lost.
I have downloaded the live iso and i was wondering if i could use usb drive (8GB) as a boot instead of burning a disk?

I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

I wanted to keep kon-boot and ubuntu live on USB drives instead of CDs for the ease of carrying around. I wonder if its at all possible to put both tools on same USB drive instead of keeping them on two separate ones?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.
I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.
On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?

I have a problem installing of centOS 5.6 from live CD.
I cannot see any option to install centOS 5.6 from live CD to hard drive on the desktop. Can anybody provide me with the steps for this.
I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.
cant get past that load screen. EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently gained interest in CentOS. So I went to the site to download the OS thought one of the mirrors. I downloaded the i386 version of CentOS 5 LiveCD2.iso and burned it to DVD to install.
When I booted up the disc a screen showing a CentOS background appears then quickly fades to black. After that nothing happens.
Maybe it's the architecture? I'm using a single core AMD64 Athlon.

I am attempting to work with adding a new hard drive with a default logical volume setup. In order to complete the task, I am instructed to use a live CD to boot the system without mounting the drives using linux rescue. I am using CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso
I have reviewed the centos documentation. When the live CD boots, it starts a count down to an automatic boot. I attempt to invoke the boot options as directed by hitting the tab and adding the words
linux rescue
At the end of the line and hit return to begin the booting process.
Unfortunately, the linux rescue boot option is ignored and the system mounts the hard drive. Additionally, I have checked the boot option several times by hitting the tab a second time and the option is not displayed.
In researching the issue, I inevitably get very similar instructions like:

I have tried building the minimal & desktop Centos 5 live CDs to no avail.Depending on the build environment, they either do not build at all (Centos 5, i386) or they build but kernel panic when I boot them (Fedora 12).I've tried various tweaks to the provided kickstart files but I have not had any success.It is important to note that I have written some very impressive (according to others) Fedora kickstart builds so I am at a loss why the stock Centos files fail.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?I suspect it has something to do with the livecd-tools or syslinux versions but all of the versions I have tried it with make no difference.
I am trying to boot the CentOS live cd off of usb. I used unetbootin to put CentOS on my 8gb usb drive after downloading the DVD iso. During boot it loads the image and continues until it reaches this point.

After this it hangs and won't continue. I am using a Compaq evo n800w and the bios is just updated to the latest version.
I recently installed CentOS 5.3 (from DVD media) on a Seagate 320GB external USB drive; this drive is connected to an Intel-based desktop computer (Intel D945GNT motherboard) with two internal SATA drives (both NTFS, as I'm running Windows XP SP3 as my primary OS). The install found the USB drive fine, and I manually configured my partitions; I had the install place the boot loader in the first sector of the boot partition of the external USB drive. I had set my BIOS to boot from the USB drive first; after a reboot, nothing happened...no GRUB menu, nada.
After some research, I had found an article discussing the need to rebuild the initrd for USB drive support. So, I booted the computer from the CentOS DVD, then went into 'linux rescue' mode; once I was at a command prompt, I navigated to the /boot directory and executed the following command:
mkinitrd --with-usb --preload=ehci-hcd --preload=usb-storage --preload=scsi_mod --preload=sd_mod ./usbinitrd-2.6.18-128.el5 2.6.18-128.el5
After the new "usbinitrd" was created, I edited grub.conf to reflect the new image, then attempted the reboot again from the USB drive. Still no GRUB menu.
I have installed the CentOS 5.4 Virtualbox, I downloaded the dvd.iso on my (windows xp) and I installed it straight from there.
Installation went ok, but whenever I start the Centos it boots from the dvd.iso and force me to install or upgrade it again.
I installed the latest download of centos 5 on to a older dell optiplex gx260. install went fine. I then hooked up an external 1tb USB drive, formatted it ext3 from inside the LVM, and mounted it to /usb-mnt. the mount command is in /etc/fstab like normal: /dev/1tb-usb/1tb-usb /usb-mnt ext3 defaults 1 2
all of the steps taken were straight out of the gui now on boot up I get: checking filesystems fsck.ext3" No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/1tb-usb/1tb-usb [FAILED]

and yeah all the /dev entries are gone. I have rebooted in linux rescue mode from the install cd, commented out fstab and been able to boot. but that doesn't actually get me to having this disk available. how to I get the system to see the drive again? if I add it back to fstab is just goes into the above. I don't seem to be able to get LVM to see the disk anymore to reformat it, I can't get the system to allow me to access it so I seem stuck.

A Twist on the Boot Installation USB Flash Drive Have made numerous attempts at making a bootable installation USB Flash drive for CentOS 5.5 but in one way or another they all came up short.Using dd to apply bootdisk.img to a flash drive per the installation instructions seems to take over the entire device even though it only needs about 10 megabytes.Using the method outlined in the Wiki article Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS and other similar methods causes vmlinuz and initrd to load very slowly. About 50 seconds compared to normal of less than 10 seconds. The dots going across the screen is like watching paint dry.Data partition not accessible to Windows machines.
The following adaptation of the Wiki content article Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS by Phil Schaffner overcomes the aforementioned short falls. Much thanks to those who created the original content sources and processes. None of the following is originally mine. I just altered it a bit to overcome the aforementioned short falls.

The problem is that I cannot enable DMA on my boot drive. My boot drive is an IDE SSD. All my other hard drives are SATA:

I have a pre-existing setup with Windows XP Professional and CentOS5.5 on a dual boot setup with the Linux drive setup as the primary drive hosting the grub menu.
I am replacing these machines with new updated ones and they have windows setup on a RAID0. I think it would be easiest to follow my previous setup and move the RAID to secondary SATA ports and put the linux drive on the primary SATA port, or should I just change the boot order in the BIOS to have the secondary linux drive boot first?
can I move a RAID setup to secondary controller ports without breaking the RAID?
