CentOS 5 :: Rpm Won't Query An Installed Package

Oct 27, 2009

I'm running Centos 5 and have recently done a yum update. I'm trying to query a package:

% rpm -q xxx.rpm
package xxx.rpm is not installed

OK, so I'll just go ahead and install the package, right?

% rpm -i xxx.rpm
package xxx.rpm is already installed

General :: Rpm Spec File Conflicts Syntax Query - Not Keeping The Package Name

Mar 9, 2011

I have inherited our Linux packaging and as the number of versions increase, the number of conflicts is starting to get a bit unmanageable. I believe the easiest way would have been to keep the package names the same and just change the release in the spec file but unfortunately I am past that as a lot of these packages are rolled out to our estate. (I am told there were reasons for not keeping the package name the same and incrementing the version/release)

Is it possible to wildcard conflicts so I don't need to keep adding as new versions are created. For example, instead of using all the conflicts below, have something along the lines of AAtest45* <= 1.4 & BBtest45* <= 1.4 Meaning that all I would need to do was change this to 1.5 at the next release (the packages below version matched the release in the spec file)

CentOS 5 :: Installing CentOS 5.5 On An Old PC -- Query On An Error Message?

Oct 24, 2010

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 on an old Pentium 4 desktop PC I have, which is not being used for much other than being a MTA, and I want to migrate this functionality onto the CentOS platform for stability (Windows is a perpetual nightmare. I partitioned a spare 20GB to experiment with, and I want to install CentOS into here to play around with first so I can move my files around between Windows and CentOS, until I'm happy all of the stuff is gone, then I can scrub the Windows partition and claim the space for CentOS.

So, I've downloaded and burned the DVD and tried to install. I start the install with no args from the main install menu, and the process goes through some probing and then comes up with the "Welcome to CentOS" menu. I go through this, and then it tries to start X Server. It fails, and falls back to text mode. I get the "Welcome to CentOS" screen again, and then proceed through it. I set my keyboard layout to UK, then this message comes up at the bottom of the screen:

"_X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for localhost:6001: Temporary failure in name resolution"

then on the next line: "Cannot open display :1" If I force the install to text, by typing "linux text" at the first menu, I get about the same way through, but the install just hangs doing nothing, and no disc access to the install disc.

Ubuntu :: How Can I Run Installed Package

Apr 11, 2010

I am running the xfce desktop on a new ubuntu 9.10 installation.I used the Synaptics Package Manager to install several applications, including R, the statistics programming language. After the installation, it took me quite a while to find where the package manager put the executable, but I found it.The problem is, I can't figure out how to get it to execute. I tried double clicking on it and I tried right clicking on it and selecting "Execute" from the menu that pops up.

How do I get an executable to execute? Also, is there an easy way to track down where the executables get put after I use the Synaptics Package Manager?It would be handy if I could put links to them in some central location.

Why does centos-release-notes have any dependancies ?

I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.

The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?
