CentOS 5 :: Scheduled Unattended Backups With Alerts If The Backups Fail
Feb 3, 2011I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.
Here's what I have planned:
machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)
uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines
I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.
Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.

Jan 14, 2011we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

Nov 12, 2009How do you get Rsync to do incremental backups rather than full backups? At the moment I have a script that will create a backup folder (if it doesnt already exist) then copy the source files into the backup directory with the command
rsync $VERBOSE --exclude=$TARGET/ $EXCLUDE --exclude '/Ls-wtgl1c8/**' -rt --delete $source/ $TARGET/$source/ >> $LOG_FILE
Target is where the files will be backed up to Sources is the dir(s) to be backed up Exclude files is the list of files not to backup
log file is where the output will be saved to. At the moment it only does full backups, but I would only like to do incremental, how would this be achieved? Am I missing out an option in the Rsync that is required.
CentOS 5 :: Can Change Passwd But Still Not Able To Login
Oct 2, 2009I have a web server running Centos5 on a Xeon processor with 2GB of RAM. Whenever I try to login as a user the system hangs.If I login as root I can login without any problems. I tried changing the passwd. I can change the passwd but still not able to login as that user. I tried creating a new user. When I run the command adduser or useradd the system hangs.

Nov 11, 2009I would like to replace my aging Freenas box with a CentOS based NAS. I would like it to have the following features:
- SAMBA with Web admin
- BIND with Web admin
- Nice to have would be native AFP support for my MAC
Question 1: Is SWAT still the current Web-based config tool for SAMBA or is there something newer?
Question 2: Is there a decent, reliable, web front end for BIND?
Question 3: Is there a current AFP guide for CentOS, everything I am finding via Google is years old.
I would also like to build a second server that I would host off-site to sync my data to.
- I was thinking OpenVPN for the link between the servers. The "remote" NAS will have to be the one initiating the connection.
Question 4: Is OpenVPN the way to go or is there something better? (I need bidirectional communications)
Question 5: Is rsync still the way to go for the data sync or is there something newer which would be lighter and/or faster?
Just need some "current" advice overall - I think the last SAMBA box I built was 4-5 years ago so what I learned then may not be applicable today.

CentOS 5 :: Centos-approved Way To Handle Group Environment Configuration?
Mar 10, 2010What's the centos-approved way to handle group environment configuration? Let's say there are users in, oh, 4 different groups. Let's use the usual suspects:
accounting
warehouse
admin
netadmin
and I want to set up environment variables and maybe some pathing that are specific to a given group. So that when 'joeblow', who is a member of group 'warehouse', logs in, the pathing and environment variables (and whatever else) that is needed for users in the 'warehouse' group is set up and configured.
What I was initially looking for was an /etc/groups.d, and in /etc/groups.d is
/etc/groups.d
accounting.sh
warehouse.sh
admin.sh
netadmin.sh
As part of the login process, the group memberships for the login username would be examined, and for each hit the respective /etc/groups.d/ script would be run. I'm not seeing anything like that, so I'm assuming centos uses some other mechanism, but I'm obviously not using the proper keyword mojo. Can someone point me to where this mechanism is described?
General :: CentOS Chmod Overiding Set-group-ID?

chmod -R g+s example and then
chmdo -R 750 example
And have the directory and all sub-directories preserve the set-group-ID. On CentOS SGID gets overridden by the second command.The OS is CentOS release 5.6 (Final)In theory, and like it says on this page, "if commands like chmod routinely cleared these bits on directories, the mechanisms would be less convenient..." and it's exactly whats happening. chmod -R 750 is effectivelly removing the SGID.How can I make g+s permanent?

Jul 23, 2009I have to set up a box which can manage all the logins in our company and has the feature to manage every possible permission with as much comfort as possible. We are using Linux and AIX therefore my Boss is willing to switch from our Windows DC to a Linux DC. And here lies the problem, I don't really know what is needed to set the Box up to manage the Unix, Samba and LDAP accounts with one tool maybe?
I would like to know which Software exactly is needed and how to manage to get the thing to work together with a security aspect. I configured a Samba DC with LDAP, Kerberos and TLS but it looks like I overdid it because Kerberos is not able to manage the things we need in a manner that the other Admins in my Company would get things done in a short time.
Therefore I would like to get listed all the Software needed and maybe some How Tos how to get thing working, because I am losing my nerves on this matter.
In the last 3 weeks I have set up several test boxes but every time something doesn't work. My biggest Problem is to get Samba and LDAP to work together with TLS or another security scenario.
CentOS 5 :: Boot - Volume Group Not Found
Oct 5, 2010Before creating this topic I googled a lot and found lots of forum topics and blog posts with similar problem. But that did not help me to fix it. So, I decided to describe it here. I have a virtual machine with CentOS 5.5 and it was working like a charm. But then I turned it off to make a backup copy of this virtual machine and after that it has a boot problem. If I just turn it on, it shows the following error message:
Activating logical volumes Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Trying to resume from /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01) ... Kernel panic ...! During the reboot I can see 3 kernels and if I select the 2nd one the virtual machine starts fine, it founds the volume group etc. (But there is also a problem - it can not connect the network adapters.) So, it is not possible to boot it with the newest kernel (2.6.18-194.17.1.el5), but it is possible with an older one (2.6.18-194.11...)
I looked into GRUB's menu.lst and it seems to be fine. I also tried #mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-92.el5.img 2.6.18-92.el5 no luck! Yes, I can insert DVD .iso and boot from it in "linux rescue" mode.
CentOS 5 :: Remove A Volume Group / Array?
Nov 16, 2010I'm trying to do a disk upgrade on some servers. They are using LVM with DRBD on top and each LVM volume contains a Xen image. I have already created identical volumes on another volume group, copied the data and pointed DRBD to the new source (Which seems to have worked).
What I am unsure of is how to safely remove the disks. The disks are an Areca Raid 1 array and support hotswap. Can I just pull them out of the machine or is some sort of command needed to tell LVM or the kernel to disconnect from the physical array device? Is removing the raid array from the Areca management GUI first a good idea?
