Debian Multimedia :: Gnome - How To Change Background Image For Login Window
Jul 16, 2011I'm fairly new to Debian/GNOME, and I'm running Squeeze and GNOME 2 and I have some questions. How exactly do I change the background image for the login window? I've looked up various suggestions but none of them seem to work - the appearances window does not ever seem to change the background image for the login screen. Also, whenever I log out or when I close the lid on my laptop and it suspends, I am unable to log back in - all I see is a black screen and my cursor, which I can move.

Nov 19, 2010I was installing a bunch of packages and one of them ended up changing the background image. This was seen after logging back in. I proceeded to right click on the background and change it back while logged in. After a 2nd reboot I could see it changed it for my userid, but I still get that wrong background during the login prompt. How can I change it back for there?

Apr 6, 2010I would like to change my username (or login name) and am wondering what the safest route to do so is. The install is on a headless server, which I just use ssh.There's a) using usermod -l newname oldname. The line in the usermod man that says that changing the login name doesn't change anything else, which makes me think that something else is bound to break. I've also considered b) creating a new user, moving the contents of my home directory to the new user, and deleting the old user. This is kind of cumbersome, but would this be the recommended way to ensure everything goes well (considering I still have to redo some config files).

May 28, 2015I recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment. I don't like the background in the login screen and want to change it. After some Googling I discovered that the path to the background is stored in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.
Unfortunately, whenever I change the background field I'm left with a black background during login. (Yes, I triple checked that I spelt the path correctly). Does the login background have to meet some criteria I don't know about, like being a certain resolution?
EDIT: Here's the content of /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf:

May 19, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix on my Gateway LT3103u. I noticed shortly into using it that it has a graphics bug every so often. Especially when I change the background image. Everything will change to a warped mix of colors and pixels. Everything is affected. My mouse, the bar at the top of the screen, text and all. My netbook runs on an AMD Athlon 64-bit processor with ATI Radeon X1270 HyperMemory up to 256MB graphics.
So far I have tried reinstalling, and even the 64bit desktop edition which had the same problem. Ive noticed that it freaks out when i scroll too quick, when changing background images, and on certain websites. Then other times its completely random. When it happens it looks similar to these: [URL]

The problem:
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank).
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great.
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.

May 21, 2011WTF why is it with every update the devs try to break something. Might as well be using Ubuntu at this point and No I do not want to install Stable. Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.
Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

Feb 21, 2010I installed OpenSUSE 11.2-KDE about 2 weeks ago, and have been pretty satisfied with it so far. Apart from one niggling little problem. When I went to the 'Password and User Account' page (Configure Desktop>About Me) and tried to change from the default image to something more personal, I got a message box saying "Your administrator has disallowed changing your image." However, on the same page I was allowed to enter personal details and could, if I wished, have changed my password. I logged in as root to see if I could change it from there, but I got the same message. As this is a single-user machine, where I am effectively root/administrator, it would appear I am banning myself from changing my image. So far, I've been allowed to change anything else.

3-I tried copy by different ways the splash.png. With gnome-conf, setting the key in apps...splash.png. Didn't work. Also I tried to replace "/usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600.jpg" to another pic I have, but no result.

Upon entering the Appearance configuration, there is a file explorer fork-bomb that occurs and floods my Taskbar for up to a minute after I've entered the config. Has anyone ever experience this and if so, how can I fix this?On top of this, I cannot change the background even if I select a new image.
