I had some issues regarding a clean install of 5.4 on my desktop. so i decided to install 5.3 and then upgrade to 5.4. I found these commands:yum clean all

Obviously there is something I'm missing or didn't do to get my server(s) to upgrade from 5.5 to 5.6 centos. I've fixed the original issue which was the crontab for updating 5.5 and the path from which it was getting the updates had changed. I was able to pull the updates for 5.6 when I made the changes in my crontab file. The yum update will not update the server to 5.6 and only updates packages on 5.5, which is obvious that I don't want this. I've looked at the yum.conf file, yum.repos.d, and in the yum directory with no success in determining why the yum update is not updating to 5.6 . I've checked my logs and nothing to indicate why it's not working. Is there something I missed and what is it? The version of kernel I'm on is:

I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an intel DP35DP motherboard - ICH9 southbridge - set to AHCI mode. Working fine under 5.2. Yesterday I updated to centos 5.3, and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16 and now it can't boot. It hangs trying to read sata1 with DRDY errors and exceptions.So then I installed 5.3 from a DVD onto a new drive, and got kernel 2.6.18-128. This worked, most of the time, but occasionally gave me this error. I then updated my BIOS, and the error went away.Then I updated this new working drive to the latest kernel (yum update again) and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16, and now it wont boot again, with the same message.

LoLwell so i did the system keeps boot till i get to this linesbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file alot, and it shows. INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes ...so maybe its a memory issue so took 8 gig out left 4 in the system now it reboot alls good with only 4 gig of ram installed so is there a way to fix it to use all the ram can i get the system boot on 4 gig and then add the 8gig later on

On first boot my system was freezed by disabled earlier but not removed manualy writed xdm service. I disable it. But not found network. I see hardware address of card fe:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff. I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"
I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."
In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

I've Got one Problem with My Computer soon after success installation of when the boot-loader ask me to choose OS at CENTOS 5.4, multi boot boot-loader if i choose windows then computer tries to boot windows but fail and give the error message that there is a problem on reading the hard disk, But when i restart it and start with LINUX then computer start successful with no error message, now i do not know what to do cause i need to use Windows and all my programs are in windows..

All other space is lvm place, on lvm living root and swap partitions. And it's work. Now I want to mirror my root and swap, and add other volumes with different raid requirements (raid0 and raid1).

I burned the Fedora 13 x64 DVD, booted from it, and attempted to upgrade my Fedora 12 x64 OS. It found my previous installation than asked my what to do with my boot partition. I chose to upgrade it, rather than skip or whatever else, only to eventually be met with a message saying the partition is too small by 9M. Really ? This is a 100 MB partition. Is 100 MB now too small for a boot partition ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was anxious to update my Opensuse to 11.4 but was worried about my slow internet connection. However an user of this forum kindly sent me a DVD by mail wich enabled me to do what I wanted. I just finished making a fresh install of Opensuse 11.4. It's wonderful. Almost all applications have improved a lot. But, unhappily some few have acquired new problems now, specially some that are in repos but not in the DVD. Let me number those I have found:
1 - In all versions of Gnome ctrl+alt+arrow (left or right) was the shorcut to switch between workspaces. Now it doesn't work. When I go to keyboard shortcuts in Gnome all options in the section of desktop enviroment are written "unknown action". There is no place to create shortcuts for actions related to the desktop as switching between workspaces. (I also want to use the opportunity to ask how can I create a shortcut to switch between workspaces in KDE too.)
2 - I used Qsynth/Fluidsynth as the default output synth for Rosegarden in Opensuse 11.3. In all versions Fluidsynth recognized bank variations immediatily and automatically as I changed them in Rosegarden. Now I installed the latest versions from Opensuse download site and it doesn't recognize bank variations anymore. It only recognize presets of the first bank of my soundfont. Strangely, in Fluidsynth-dsii I can load presets of any bank. But Qsynth/Fluidsynth doesn't recognize them.
3 - Nvidia proprietary drviers always used to cause some minor problems with compiz. But now they are worst than ever! When I launch applications most of the times windows come maximized but on the screen they are not really maximized at all. I have to click on the window title to bring it to the right size. If I don't do it letters inside that window don't appear correctly. Sometimes I click in close button in a window and it only works after the 2nd or 3rd click. And there are another some minor flaws or slowdowns.
4 - In a terminal I typed su. As superuser I typed nautilus. It didn't launch and gave me back the following message:

I just can launch nautilus if I login as root.If anyone have tried to connect Opensuse 11.4 to internet using DSL and it complained about one or more missing files and you didn't find those files in neither in DVD nor in 11.4 repos, it really has happenned (at until last week if anyone didn't correct it yet). The workaround is to download them from 11.3 repos and install them manually using Yast. It really works!
I'm using emacs as editor. When using Emacs with any kernel for the 11.4 version, I observe that the cursor does not follow the arrow keys, and that some characters are randomly appearing in the Emacs text windows. This disappears when using the failsafe kernel. What could be the origin of this flaw and what can be done for solving this issue ?

Currently I am encountering the following error message when trying to upgrade: "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist."

I have a Ubuntu Server machine that I can't get to 10.04. Sometime in the past I updated it to 9.04, but perhaps something went wrong. When I do a do-release-upgrade, it tells me there are no upgrades available. I tried a bunch of things but no luck, so I installed gnome to try the gui update manager on the console. When I start it, it first tells me that my distribution is no longer supported and that I should update. It gives me the button that says 9.04 is available, but after I click it I'm told that there are no new versions available.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade . It says that 3 packages are not upgraded. Thet are linux-generic, linux-image-generic and linux-headers generic. I have never had this problem when using sudo apt-get dist-upgrade since it is supposed to resolve all conflicts and other issues with upgrades. Can anyone tell me how I can upgrade those three packages?
