I have a CentOS5 server with a 1tb hard drive.There is only 80gb of data on that huge drive and now I want to make a bare metal recovery backup using AcronisMy question is, how can I estimate the amount of time the backup will take and the size of the image file? Is it based on the size of my drive or is it based on the amount of data on the drive?
View 1 RepliesI have a CentOS 5.5 server that has just recently been updated to 5.6 running PostgreSQL 8.4 and Drupal for an internal website. The server is also acting as a shared network storage between the Linux server and Windows desktops with Samba.
I just recently purchased a license to run Symantec Backup Exec System Restore 2010 for Linux and the only operating systems that are supported are RedHat and Suse Linux.
Does anyone know of a nice open source solution that we can use to create backup images of the server?
In the event of a server crash, we want to be able to rebuild the server via a bit-by-bit backup image.
The CentOS 5.6 is 32bit
Is there a way/command to back up all data from a Red hat Linux 4 serve[Including user rpofiles, data, group info, encrypts] either to a Red hat Linux 5.4 machine or as an Image file or manageable resource?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 4 different servers with exactly the same hardware. I set up one of them to have a centos install with all the basic stuff I'd like running on each one. I then created an image of the harddrive with the operating system, and stored it on an external drive. I used dd to copy the external image to one of the new machines. It worked fine, everything booted up as normal and with a few tweaks everything was great. The problem is that the drive is rather large (500gb) and it takes days for dd to copy it over. I decided to try a different route, I booted to a usb (using the linux distro on the ultimate boot cd pre-loaded with gparted). There are two partitions on the external drive, a small (100mb) partition which can easily be copied over with gparted, and the larger 480+gb lvm partition.
Gparted doesn't support lvm, so I used fdisk to create a new lvm partition on the new machine, and then pvcreate/vgcreate/lvcreate to re-create the same volume groups/logical volumes that are in the image on the external harddrive. I rsync'ed all the information over from LogVol00, and made the same swap partition LogVol01 (which took WAY less time). I disconnected the hard drive and renamed the volume group to VolGroup00 (initiall I named it differently, since linux doesn't like having the volume groups named the same). I can mount the LogVol00 partition and see all the files as they should be. But when I try and boot up, it doesn't even go to grub, I just end up with a blank screen and blinking cursor. How to make the drive bootable? Alternatively, a better strategy than using dd to restore this image??
After screwing up an update to Ubuntu 11.04 I decided to do a clean install. I tried downloading the AMD64 DVD image of 11.04 but I have found that some of the files cannot be downloaded and appear to have bad file size. In several mirrors and repositories I found the image size to be only 46.1 MB! (Yes, thats "Mega"-bytes, not Giga-bytes. I ftp'd to the repositories/mirror sites and confirmed this.) Yet in many of the HTTP pages it shows as 4.0 GB.I can't believe that the true size is 46.1 MB as the i386 DVD image is over 3 GB. 4.0 GB sound right, but doesn't match the actual file size. So, how long until it gets updated?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have to upload a signature image(in jpeg format) to fill a recruitment form which says file-size must be of between 10-20 kb......i have scanned image which is of 9.5 kb.....tried to edit in shotwell photo manager....tried some random things in Adjust and crop menu but my little changes didn't work, it always shortened the file size......as i don't know anything about Image editing can someone tell me how can i increase the file size (>=10kb) i also tried gnome-screenshot to take the screenshot of the image, but it also saved the new image smaller than 10kb....

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I first installed K3b it burned the first track with no GUI user configurations.The second time it says that the file name is too long and asks if you want to catenate (shorten) it even if it is the same file you have already burned that didn't ask for this shortening of the file name before. Than it gives you an error of "Could not determine size of resulting image file". So my question is how do you use K3b I guess. Brasero won't do multi-session as far I can deduct. It will ask if you want to do it but after ask if you want to erase the disc.If you force it there is no entry of the previous burns.If I could get Brasero to muli-session it would sovle my problem as well. Here's the debugging stuff. I'm using this on Gnome.

View 4 Replies View RelatedUsing Linux, when I boot I automatically have 16 16MB ramdisks, however, I would like to create one really large ramdisk to test some software.I found that I can adjust the size of the ramdisks already on the system with the kernel boot parameter ramdisk_size however, this makes all 16 ramdisks (/dev/ram0 - /dev/ram15) the size that is specified. So if I want to create a 1GB ramdisk, I would need 16GB of memory.Basically, I want to create one 10GB ramdisk which would be /dev/ram0. How would I go about doing that? I assume there is a kernel boot parameter, but I just haven't found it.

The problem is I need to run it remotely from my office. Most of the software I found either need to use bootable cd or need to unmount my partitions which is I wasn't allowed to since it's a production servers. I also tried dd but it consume too much time, sector by sector cloning and empty disk space also included so the file created also big in size.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWe have some servers that run in very harsh environments (research vessel) that need to have high-availability.We have software RAID 1 for some measure of resiliency, along with proper data backups (tapes etc), however we would like to be able to break out a new server and re-image it (including RAID setup) from a known good copy if the hardware completely fails on the production box. Simplicity of the process is a big plus.I am interested in any advice on the best way to approach this. My current approach (relatively new to Linux administration, totally new to MDADM) is to use DD to take a complete gzipped copy of one of the RAID'ed devices (from a live CD): ode:
dd if=/dev/sda bs=4096 | gzip -c > /mnt/external/image/test.img then reverse the process on the new PC, finally using Code:mdadm --assemble to re-create and re-build the array.
I have been looking for a complete backup solution like "Acronis True Image Backup and Recovery" on Windows for Slackware a while.

In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

Well, it works but, the user will see that the size of the file is bigger than the real file. Apparently, CIFS gets the size of the symbolic link (aproxim.32K) and add it to the size of the file.Example 1: 100KB file, used with shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 100KBExample 2: 100KB file, used with symbolic link inside a shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 132KB. The VM software in use is Xen, as supplied with the OS.The host machine's time and date is fine, however both Virtual Servers are running ahead of real time consitantly.Running /etc/init.d/ntpd restart will resolve the issue however one of these is running MailScanner and when the time suddenly goes backwards, sometimes by as much as an hour, it stops working properly.

I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )
1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?
2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"
3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?

What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?

Specifically, I run the Folding@Home application on my Linux workstation. Periodically, it will have trouble logging-in to the home server, and will sit idle for a long time, but not release memory/resources it has claimed (yes, I realize this is likely a bug in the tool, but I can't fix that currently). Typically just the act of killing and starting the tool will allow it to check-in again. So, I would like to be able to run something like:
run_for <time> ./fah6
Does such a tool exist, or should I write a wrapper than nukes the fah6 client after, say, a week and restart it?
