I use KDE but there is no login manager at all, no KDM or even GDM.I have to login from the console and startx each boot.Not especially problematic but I can't understand it. Apparently there is GDM installed but I don't know how to set it to run at bootup, as it's not a daemon (is it?).And I can't find a KDM package in any repo I have tried.

I installed CentOS 5.4 in a Virtualbox instance using the text mode installer. The GUI installer crashes. I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.

yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on

Is there an easy way to update Perl from repos or do I need to compile from source to get a newer version?

I'm trying to set-up MailScanner which requires a newer version of Perl IO than CentOS 5 appears to have in it's standard repos. I've also tried updating Perl from the rpmforge repo - but that just results in a bunch of transaction conflicts being reported by Yum. Is there another way of updating Perl from repos?
I've recently switch to Arch with Lxde, and I'm looking for a login manager. I want this to support a "guest" account, a user that can be logged on passwordlessly, but not just auto-login. I don't really want to use kdm or gdm, either.

Here's the Centos 5.5 channel file for Smart:
Just shut Smart PM down, copy this file into /etc/smart/channels, and restart smart.
Smart should then detect the new channels (repos) for Centos 5.5
Update your channels in Smart, and you should then have yum repos and smart channels both in sync, looking at the same set of packages.
Copy this to CentOS-Base.channel, and add it to the /etc/smart/channels directory.

But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?
I have just switched from Ubuntu to Debian, so on the whole I can easily figure out how to use Debian. Scim however, is giving me a problem. I have installed scim with the package manager, but cannot start it.With Ubuntu is was ctrl+space bar, but so far I have not found any key combinations that work. In the preferences menu there is an entry for scim set-up, but it is only an information page.AlthoughI have been using Linux for a few years, I am not much of a terminal user, so I have not even thought of going that route for fear of wrecking my new system.Considering how easy it was to use scim on Ubuntu, which is a Debian derivative, it should not be difficult to get it working. Im having a bit of trouble with my title bar disappearing after installing compiz manager and activating the cube, i tried unactivating but the bar still wont appear, im using a hp mini netbook so am not running ati or nvidia graphics but it does have a standard intel graphics chip, how I can resolve this as I need a title bar and if cant get it might have to migrate back to windows.

To find installed packages one would search rpm or pkg DB, but what if the software was installed by a tarball or bin or even compiled.
Anyone got any suggestions on how to script for these, I was hoping to write a script to find all the third party stuff, I know there will be a lot of stuff that gets picked up so what is the best way to get minimize false positives?

I'm running 10/11 on a toshiba satellite. i kinda got tired of loosing stuff because i mis-timed the battery discharge, so some months ago i pulled the battery and just ran on the adapter (back ground, i don't know if it's nothing, related to, or caused the problem).
monday morning fired her up - boom got the power "gnome manager not installed correctly"message. tuesday, googled gnome then power then... you get the route, and found Fedoraforum.org, read the stuff, did the yum remove...., did the yum install.... everthing seemed cool. 2nd reboot she stopped at the "f/infinity/balloon" kinda logo.
i went to verbose startup and - all sorts of services were failing; the word deprecate(d, ing, tion) came up a lot "device full..." came up a fair bit as well. when i tried the "yum remove" approach again i got [rpmdb: write: 0x1fd48b0, 8192: No space left on device]. similarily on "yum install" same kinda stuff - deprecation, BaseExpection, deprecated..... kinda long winded. up till now (13 years)
my update manager has run today and returned updates for firefox. Which would be a superb, immensely handy thing - if firefox happened to be installed on my box. It isn't.Why does the update manager return updates for software that isn't installed?
