I have a problem on my LAN, then: I have a laptop on which Windows Vista is installed, and every time I try to do ping to my server centos, my centos server does not respond to ping. The server is operating normally, because I found other PCs on my network that communicate normally with my centos server.

In my office i have a network of 172.16.31.0 and a squid proxy server running, all other systems have windows XP and one system has centos. On centos system i have three lan cards and i want to test some things on it. So i assigned another IP on it of range 192.168.7.0/24 and same range on another windows system. And all the systems connected through a same network switch.
Unable to ping between Centos and Windows system. If i ping from one centos to windows system with the series of 172.16.31.0 then it replies very well but same thing is not happening in other 192.168.7.0/24 IP series.

Does # ping even care about samba? How can I get this to work?
I'm using debian lenny.When I boot with kernel 2.6.36, ping always respond with Network is Unreachable. But when I boot with kernel 2.6.26 it works. I can't even ping the dafault router of 2.6.26 kernel when I am at 2.6.36. Also, system/administration/network does not show any connections while it shows something at the other kernel.

I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.
I got a CentOS server setup as a dhcp server using dnsmasq. I followed this guide more or less: [URL] So, the problem seems to be concerning the DNS server on the clients. In windows I get the "limited connectivity" icon for the network, and when I select troubleshoot it says the DNS server does not respond. Issuing 'ipconfig /all' clearly shows the IP of the CentOS machine as the DNS server, which should be correct, yes?
ETH0 is working as WAN connection and that works great.. no problem with the WAN connection at all on the CentOS machine. ETH1 has the IP 192.168.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.0 When starting eth1, it sometimes says that it can't start eth1 because the IP 192.168.0.1 is already in use.. but that is most certainly not the case. Maybe there's some kind of issue here that messes with the DNS? What's mind boggling is that it works great on a linux machine (dhcp client) and on a windows xp machine. but it does not work on the windows 7 laptop and a vista laptop and a pda device.

Just for playing with it and learn a little linux.this server has to Network interface cards. one for connecting from extern and one from connecting from the LAN.when i want to connect from lan (eg via SSH) this allways works!when i want to connect not from LAN this only works sometimes! only if i establish at the same time a connection from LAN it wors mostly.with other devices i have no problem (tested another server with just 1 NIC) and this works too.also the problem is not dyndns because i have the same problem when i try to connect through the direct IP.

I recently setup a new Linux server running Fedora 10. For some reason all ping response times are rounded to the nearest 10ms. For example, running the simple command "ping yahoo.com" give the following sample results:

I could post a larger result set but its all the same... every response is rounded to a multiple of 10ms. This wouldn't be a big deal except that the server is running Nagios for monitoring so accurate stats are important. The Nagios check_ping and check_icmp commands are also returning rounded off results. How can I get ping to simply respond with the actual response times rather than a rounded off number?
I'm trying to learn Linux and have created a VMWare guest operating system using CentOS 4.8. I expect the next step is to install ssh in order to transfer files to the server but as of yet I haven't figured out how to assign it a host name or how to effect a transfer.

I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.
I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.
The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.
For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy.Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address.My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.
I have connected my Windows XP2002 laptop with Linux 5.4 server through a direct LAN cable. I have made following configurations:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two CentOS servers on the same LAN. One is CentOS 4.7 the other 5.2 They both also have a WAN interface to the same remote network. On CentOS 4.7 I can ping the remote network through the CentOS 5.2 server. i.e. ping -I eth0 remotehost On CentOS 5.2 I can NOT force the ping to go out the CentOS 4.7 server without over riding my routing tables to make eth0 a more direct route than the eth1 route.
On 5.2 If I do the ping -I eth0 remotehost, and a tcpdump on eth0, the outbound ping will not be going out eth0, he overrides it and sends it out eth1. In fact, on CentOS 4.7 if I do not have a route to the remote network through the other server (turn proxy arp off on the 5.2 machine), I will get "Destination Host Unreachable". I would ideally like to get the 5.2 machine to behave the way the 4.7 machine does.
My real life application for this is that I have a CentOS server in a location that controls access to the Internet. There is another router on the netowrk that handles traffic back to our corporate office. the CentOS server also has the ability to get to the corporate office. I ping the corporate office through eth0 to find out if the link through the other router is indeed up and active. I want to make this a CentOS 5.2 server but alas, I can not tell if the other route is up or not.
I have configured (bind) my server with multiple static IP. I can ping the main IP from outside but not the other IP . I can ping all the IP from localhost but not from the internet. I do not have any external firewall or blocking device. server is directly connected via modem. If anyone could advice me for why i cannot ping other Ip's

But when I tried to connect to the internet, the trouble began.My network card is installed and the status is "OK". The network card is a "Realtek RTL 8168C(P)/8111C(P)".The status of the device said "Inactive" and when I tried to activate it, it came with an error: Failed; no link present. Check Cable?Now the cable is connected as it should be.So next step I did is put in a static IP. Now the activation works fine.However I still have no internet. I'm new to Linux, so before connecting it up to the router I wanted to try and understand the network settings, so I connected it directly to my other PC with an RJ45 cable. From Windows 7 I can ping all known static IP addresses, but from Linux I can only ping the Linux addresses, not the Windows 7 one. Below are the TCP/IP IPv4 settings, all IPv6 settings are set to auto-assign.
Windows box (uses wireless connection for the router):

The idea was to connect the box directly to the router (with RJ45) and to be able to remote login from my main PC to this one. This box is to be my home server, which I was going to put virtual machines on to for things like my development work and such.

I just downloaded and installed the latest Cent OS 5. I disabled SE linux, turned off the firewall, and selected the Server package options when installing. I plan on using this as a router/firewall between my internal network and the internet, as well as web server, etc. The first thing I did was to configure the two NICs, internal one with 192.168.7.1 address and the other with an address from my ISP (I have a static address, but I also tried to let the DSL router assign an address via DHCP). Everything looked fine, I checked /etc/resolv.conf and my routes. I was able to ping the DSL router from the server, but I was not able to do a ping or lookup on anything outside my network. I tried host, dig, nslookup, etc, no luck. Obviously then, I was not able to browse the net with firefox.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.

I am able to ping the windows 7 box by its ip address but unable to do so by its hostname. This is very inconvenient since I would like to set up a share by hostname (doesnt change) and not by ip (changes occasionally since its dhcp).
