View 1 RepliesI have got an Notebook whose CPU is 64bit.The Notebook has an CentOS installation. Now I want to find out if this CentOS is 32bit or 64bit.How can I check this?
uname -a
gives something with ....i686 i686 i386...."
What does that mean?Does that refer to the hardware or the CentOS OS? An 32bit CentOS can be installed on a 64bit hardware!I am interested in the OS capability not of the hardware!
I have installed recently the Fedora 8 in a computer and during installation it was set a static IP with the netmask and gateway. At first it worked well, but after some boots the connection begins to fail. It seems that the network-manager withdraws the static IP and tries
to get connection via DHCP. Below is the /var/log/messages file during the failed connection:
Code:
Sep 19 10:36:53 canario avahi-daemon[1695]: Interface eth0.IPv4 no longer relevant for mDNS.
Sep 19 10:36:53 canario avahi-daemon[1695]: Withdrawing address record for fe80::20d:87ff:fe0c:355f on eth0.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. My internet connection is an ADSL which I have set up using "pppoeconf". The connection starts at boot up. I can also start it if needed by using "sudo pon dsl-provider" and can stop it by using "poff dsl-provider".Recently I noticed that when I start my computer, there is some program (or programs) which is connecting automatically to the internet and downloading and uploading a lot of data. The data transferred can exceed 200 mb or 300 mb in an hour. I don't know what is being uploaded or downloaded.I know for sure that no file sharing programs like bittorrent clients are started at bootup so it is strange that this much data to be downloaded and uploaded without me sharing files or downloading files explicitly. The update software also does not run by default as I have opted to start it manually.
Is there any application which shows the programs that are connected to any particular port and transmitting and receiving data?In Windows XP I use a program called "What's Running" which clearly lists the programs using the different ports in the local machine and the remote IP addresses that the program is connected to. It also shows which program is transmitting and receiving data at any point in time. Is there any similar program for Linux? My internet connection is a data limited package otherwise I probably would not have bothered.
I have a question regarding the configuration of Network Connection. My wired connection is fine right now and when I check the network connection applet, it display active information of eth0. However, when I click the Configure button, the Network Connection window appears but there's nothing in the Wired panel. Should there be a eth0 in that panel? I remember I had one before, but after I messed with some configuration of VPN, my network became unstable and I remove the Network Manager to try to solve the problem. Since then, there's nothing in my Network Connection window, though I can still connect to my router with eth0. Now even after I reinstalled the Network Manager, I still don't get anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new server running on xubuntu 9.10 behind a "Check Point Safe @ Office security appliance" (a LAN switch with an obnoxious firewall), and cannot make ssh, ftp, telnet, or vnc connections to it from outside the network. All I get are "connection refused" errors. I've made sure sshd, x11vnc, and proFTPd are running when I test the connections, and that ufw (firewall) has all of their default ports completely unrestricted. I've set a rule on the router to allow and forward all connections and all ports to the server, and I've also also put it on the exposed machines list, which reads like it should provide full access to any incoming connection. I still can't make connections to it, and it's driving me nuts. Does anyone have suggestions (or requests for more information)?
(ps- The router isn't really a choice: even if I bought another, I'd have to hide it and hope no one notices the policy breach)
I'm trying to setup a Centos 5.6 Squid Proxy Server with Content Filtering & Antivirus Scanning Incoming HTTP Traffic from the Internet
I then proceeded to setup an configure the Proxy Server, i was able to test and confirm that Squid and Dansguardian Content Filter is working, however i dont know if Clamav is scanning HTTP traffic before it hits the client/server. Is there a way i can check if the Antivirus scanning is working.. is there some log file or real world test i can i can do to confirm that Clamav is scanning incoming traffic or even blocking potential viruses ??
Anyone who has squid proxy server with Clamav configured and its working can share there settings/setup with me and how they tested it ??
I'm familiar with linux (Debian/Ubuntu), but new to CentOS. I recently installed CentOS 5.2 on a new server for my radio station. I can log in and do everything fine, save connect to any network. I only have a Broadcom wired nic. I know the wire and ethernet jack work fine, so that lead me to the server's settings. I'm not sure if I missed something somewhere, or a similar post (I'm sorry for double-posting if this has been done before).
There is a static IP address set, and that's done correctly.
From what I've seen, someone would like to see /sbin/lspci | grep -i ether: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5722 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
I'm trying to setup a ssh connection from to my house that way I can learn Linux on a box that won't make my boss the sys admin (Im help desk) grind his teeth. He say that ssh port is allowing connections out of the firewall but not in so I can connect to my house. However If I try to connect to my box I get a message stating that the connection has time out. I have port forwarded the 22 to my box and have even changed the port to see if it is my isp blocking me. I am able to connect via SSH internally but when I try outside my house I am running into trouble. I looked up how to disable my fire wall and as far as I know it is.

I understand this is a command level and have been advised to use OpenVPN which I have successfully installed. My problem is I only have the details remote ip address, username and password. I believe I have to use the 'client.conf' script instead of server.conf.

I'd like to use NetworkManager on a freshly installed CenntOS 5 on laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. I followed: [URL] Everything went OK, until I selected my active LAN connection in "Edit Connections". After clicking on "Edit", it's not possible to change anything - all is grayed-out. I'm guessing it's a permission problem. But I don't know the internal structure of NetworkManager and what files to look at. I was also expecting that after stopping the network service "Syetem->Admin->Network" would be inactive, but it isn't. Shouldn't the old network manager be uninstalled as well?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS 5.6 (kernel: 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5) with X Window on my HP Compaq 6710b. I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.
However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection.
